Ottawa Branch Bulletin MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Karen Moxley Happy New Year to everyone and I hope you celebrated Hogmonay in true Scottish style! I was thinking, after all the turkey, shortbread, etc., of Christmas, I was thinking that our mantra for January should be fitness, fitness, fitness….hmmm…. A number of recent studies reported by the RSCDS in Edinburgh have attributed fitness to Scottish Country Dancing and there are plans to re-introduce Scottish Country dancing into the school curriculum. Dancing is "good for health." A Scottish government-commissioned study, based on data from the Scottish Household Survey 2011, showed that activities such as dancing, reading and going to the theatre have a "positive impact" on the health of Scots. The research, carried out among 14,358 households, found that regardless of factors such as age, economic status etc, cultural participation was positive for health and wellbeing. Those who participated in dance were 62% more likely to report good health than those who did not. But you knew that already, didn't you? Since I last reported on branch events, a successful November Social was held celebrating St Andrews Day. Our thanks to Betty Anderson for devising the program and the Experienced Social Class for hosting it. In late November, Betty Anderson organized an evaluation session to choose one dance written by a Branch member for possible inclusion in Book 49. Five dancers submitted 5 FUN dances: Happy Hands (48R4C-square) by Bryan Gordon Hey Jude (32R4C-set) by Charlie Inglis The Witch of November (32R3C) by Penny Leptik Capital Lassie (32S4C-square) by Greg Reynolds Margaret's Party (32S3C-set) by Pat Scrimgeour Feedback from the dancers who attended the session indicated that it was very tough to choose only one dance. However, congratulations to Penny Leptik and her dance "The Witch of November" as the Ottawa Branch choice. Shortly thereafter, it was Ho, Ho, Ho time at the Glebe Community Centre. The Branch Christmas party on Dec 7th was a FUN, FUN, FUN event. Kudos to Sue Moss (the convenor), the Teaching class, the Dem team and the many, many volunteers who contributed to making this event so special. Thank you to Claire Apsimon for, once again, organizing the Hogmanay dance at Parkdale. It was a great way to bring in the New Year. For many of us, we started out the New Year on the RIGHT foot, reeling to Mairi's Wedding as the clock struck twelve. Looking ahead to 2014, please mark your Calendar on Jan 17th as we celebrate Scotland's most famous poet Robbie Burns. Barbara Munro has devised a Beginner class friendly program that I'm sure all will enjoy. Rumor has that a special treat will be served too. Please plan to attend. Don't forget that the February social has shifted to Feb 14th in order to make it a truly Valentine Dance. Hurrah!!! Barbara and John Bottriel have volunteered to Chair this year's Annual Ball. Please circle April 5th on your calendars. The Annual Ball is being held at the same venue as last year, however, it has had a name change to Ottawa Event and Conference Centre. Same place, different name but still easy access and super underground FREE parking. For those of you who have attended before, you know that the Annual Ball is always a great evening. Nothing beats dancing to live music! So please plan to attend so that we can continue to hold these FUN events in Ottawa. In closing, let's make 2014 a FUN, FUN, FUN year!! 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OTTAWA BRANCH
The Branch will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary coming up in 2016 and there are a number of eventscurrently being planned by the Anniversary Committee for the dancing year 2015/16. To get things going, aid inpublicizing the year, and to put a stamp on the celebrations, we need a logo. The committee is asking Branchmembers to submit designs for a logo which would be suitable for embroidering on garments, used for letterheadand on a banner.
Submissions are requested by 15 January 2014 so we can select a suitable logo, reproduce it and have it readyfor September 2014. Please send submissions to Bill Low, [email protected].
Looking forward to the great artwork.
50th Anniversary Committee
“For the 50th Anniversary it was decided that we should publish a cookbook of all the favourite recipes of ourmembers. The cookbook that was published for the 25th was a great success. Please send your recipes to either me at [email protected] or John Bottriell at [email protected] are a lot of good cooks in the Branch, both women and men, so we expect an avalanche of recipes. You candefinitely send in more than one.” Thanks Katie Shaw for the 50th Anniversary Committee.

OBITUARY
ELIZABETH FRASER Elizabeth Fraser, a long-time member of our Branch, died on December 1st after spending more than threeyears in a coma. She was 100 years old. Elizabeth was a bright, energetic and fiercely independent lady. She livedalone in her home until a fall caused the coma from which she never recovered. She was a lady of many talents. Elizabeth painted watercolours, and wrote children's stories. Many willremember the "Dancing Dragons" T-shirts which Elizabeth designed when the Branch entered a boat in the DragonBoat Races. She won the best design award that year. She took university history classes when she was well into her seventies, and of course she loved her Scottishdancing. In the summer she held some garden parties for her dancing friends, and she even devised one or twodances. She also went on several Pacific boat dance cruises run by the late Bob Blackie. May we all live our lives with the same spirit and enthusiasm that Elizabeth put into hers.
