POSSIBLE.WHAT’SThe explosion of over-‐the-‐top content, otherwise known as OTT, and the growing masses of content-‐hungry consumers have reshaped the television landscape to the point that the quesKon, “Is TV even TV anymore?” is a very real one. As we accelerate into 2015, new contenders have made their presence known — most notably tradiKonal pay networks. They are duplicaKng and in some instances enhancing the experience with shiny baubles many viewers may find hard to resist.

DISH WANTS TO PUT CABLE TV IN A SLING Dish Network has launched SlingTV, a U.S.-‐only, Internet-‐based television package that will include a movie rental service. This $20 per month package will include what no others have before it, or maybe a^er — sports! ESPN and ESPN2 will be available along with CNN, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Travel Channel, Food Network, ABC Family, HGTV, Disney Channel and Maker. Sling TV will be available across a large ecosystem of screens, ranging from mobile devices to Smart UHD televisions. With its flat rate, mix of popular channels, UI accessibility and plans to expand its offerings internaKonally, Kme will reveal whether or not Dish has struck the right chord with cord-‐cucers and cord “neverers.” If successful, SlingTV is a guaranteed game changer, one that is aimed directly at reducing Cable TV subscribers.
SUPER STREAM SUNDAY This won’t be the first Kme the Super Bowl has been streamed for free for U.S. viewers, but it has never been designed with cord-‐cucers in mind. The experience won’t require Cable TV authenKcaKon and will also include the famed hal^ime show. Dubbed “Super Stream Sunday”, users will be able to watch from their computers at NBCSports.com or download the NBC Sports Live Extra app to watch the big game on Android Tablets, iPads and iPod Touches. Thanks to ownership rights, only Verizon subscribers will be able to stream the Big Game from their smartphones. The 11-‐hour event, beginning at 12pm on Super Bowl Sunday, will also allow viewers to watch a new episode of The Blacklist a^er the game. But before you get the warm and fuzzies, please know that NBC isn’t being wholly considerate of the cord-‐cueng movement. The goal here is simple: familiarizing exisKng subscribers with NBC’s authenKcaKon-‐necessary TV Everywhere capabiliKes and luring in new subscribers in order to promote all that pay TV has to offer. But with CBS, HBO and DISH already providing ways to stream content free and clear, the quesKon is how long will it take NBC execs and their owners at Comcast to follow suit.
AMAZON WINS WITH TRANSPARENT History was made when the Amazon Prime Series and the show’s main character, played by Jeffrey Tambor, both won Golden Globes for Best TV Series and Best Actor Comedy or Musical, respecKvely. The second season has already been green-‐lit, and in celebraKon of this feat by the second-‐place streaming service, Amazon gi^ed all of us with 24 hours of free streaming of the series Transparent on Saturday, January 24, 2015. Available to all via the Amazon Instant Video app, the Amazon Prime subscripKon service was also discounted 27% during the same Kme period, reducing the annual subscripKon service to $72, down from $99. Seemingly, taking a page from the T-‐Mobile customer-‐friendly playbook, Amazon lured a new audience into “kicking the Kres” of both its content and plakorm. CompeKKve pay streaming services could follow suit with similar reward-‐celebraKons that conKnue to break the tradiKonal model of television content consumpKon.

WHAT’S NEXT: THE CONSUMER DECIDES With everyone from Condé Nast to Overstock (that’s right, Overstock) coming to the marketplace to deliver streaming content and the recent announcements from Neklix and Amazon that they will be ramping up their producKons of original series, consumers will determine which plakorms are truly providing value. UlKmately, the biggest winners are consumers who now have an unlimited number of hours of content to watch. Brands are now faced with rethinking how they will get their messages to the masses.
