The September issue of Shueisha's Bessatsu Margaret
magazine has announced on Wednesday that a live-
action film adaptation of Kazune Kawahara's High
School Debut (Kōkō Debut) shōjo manga has been
green-lit. The release date, cast, and other details have
not been announced yet.
In this high school romantic comedy, a girl named Ha-
runa recruits a boy named Yoh to remake her image
and get a boyfriend. Under Yoh's "coaching," Haruna
transforms from a softball-playing tomboy to a femi-
nine girl. However, Yoh adds one catch to their agree-
ment: Haruna cannot fall in love with Yoh himself.
The manga ran in Bessatsu Margaret from 2003 to
2008, and 13 book volumes were compiled and pub-
lished. Viz Media published the final manga volume in
North America in February. Kawahara has been draw-
ing her new Aozora Yell (Yell for the Blue Sky) high
school band manga in Bessatsu Margaret since Au-
gust of 2008.
DE B 'S MA N G A BL O G By Deb Aoki, Manga Guide
Reading a first volume of new manga series is like a blind date: You pick it up because someone recommended it, or you
liked how it looked. If the first date went well, you go out again and hope for the best. After going on a first and second
"date" with Kazune Kawahara's new shojo manga romantic comedy series, High School Debut, I'm happy to say that I not
only had a nice time, I'm on the hook for a long-term relationship with this new series from Shojo Beat / VIZ Media. (or at
least to Volume 3!)
When all her efforts fall flat, Haruna decides to try the same tactics that helped her to become an all-star softball player in
intermediate school: She looks for a coach. Haruna recruits Yoh, one of the best-looking guys in school to help her. Crabby
and cynical Yoh isn't into it, but Haruna's enthusiasm wears down his resistance. He agrees to be her "dating coach" with
one condition: She can't fall for him.
What happens from there is pure comic gold -- these two opposites banter and bicker in a way that feels authentic and
genuinely funny. Kawahara draws facial expressions that are just priceless! Add to the mix nicely crafted art, wonderful,
well-rounded characters and a nicely paced story, it's little wonder that both volumes of High School Debut hit it out of the
park for me. Read my reviews of High School Debut Volume 1 and High School Debut Volume 2 and maybe you'll fall in
love with this shojo manga rookie too.

The Anime Network of North America has announced that it will start streaming the
Maid-Sama anime series on June 15. The first episode will be available to Premium
subscribers on that day, and then it will be available to Registered users on June
17. A new episode will follow on June 24 and every Thursday thereafter.
The anime adapts Hiro Fujiwara's Kaichou wa Maid-sama! romantic comedy manga.
The story centers on a class president named Misaki Ayuzawa who despises the
mostly male, slovenly population at her school, which was once an all-boys school.
However, Misaki's most handsome schoolmate just discovered her secret — that
she works afterschool at a maid café.
The anime premiered in Japan on April 1, and the 13th episode is slated to air there
on June 24. Hiroaki Sakurai (Cromartie High School, Revolutionary Girl Utena) is
directing the series at J.C. Staff (Honey and Clover, Azumanga Daioh). Tokyopop is
publishing the fifth volume of the manga this month under the Maid-Sama title.
Episode 1 can be watched for free as long as you register.
