If you answered YES to most of these questions, then you might suffer from Osteoporosis. The most common locations for osteoporosis-related fractures are in the hip, spine, and wrist. Osteoporosis is a condition of decreased bone mass, which leads to fragile bones that are at an increased risk for fractures. Often there are no symptoms until the first fracture occurs, which is why osteoporosis is often referred to as the "silent disease".
Although osteoporosis medication can be enough to stop the progression of the disease and protect the bones, when these are not effective, surgery must be taken into consideration. In the case of severe osteoporosis there are two main surgical procedures that are performed: Vertebroplasty (a minimally invasive procedure used to reinforce vertebrae with compression fractures) and Kyphoplasty (a minimally invasive procedure that is used to restore the height of the vertebrae and stabilize weakened bone).
