Gifts that show you care(Family Features) — The

holiday season is a time for generosity and kindness. While you’re on the quest for the perfect gifts for loved ones, why not pick those that support children in need?

The United Nations Chil-dren’s Fund (UNICEF) works in more than 190 coun-tries and territories to save and improve children’s lives, providing medicine, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. The organization is offering holiday shoppers searching for unique gifts the opportu-nity to support children with a variety of products that benefit UNICEF, including items from corporate part-ners Gucci, IKEA and Mont-blanc.

Holiday card and gifts col-lection

With an affordable price range of $10 to $20, UNI-CEF boxed holiday cards can be purchased at Pier 1 Imports, IKEA, Barnes and Noble and at select Hallmark Gold Crown stores. The holiday catalog features gifts ideal for any age and budget range, from Peruvian finger-less gloves made of soft Al-paca wool and bread-warmer baskets, to a safari bib and blanket set, to President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF Caryl Stern’s up-lifting new book, I Believe in ZERO: Learning from the World’s Children, focused on her travels to developing countries. To shop online, visit https://shop.unicefusa.org/.

Gift that support educationAccess to education is a

fundamental human right,

and yet there are 57 million children not enrolled in ele-mentary school globally. Sup-port from partners such as Gucci, IKEA and Montblanc helps enable UNICEF to build schools, train teachers and provide a safe and pro-tective environment where children can learn and play.

• Gucci for UNICEF “Nice” shopper bag - Twen-ty-five percent of the retail price of the Gucci for UNI-CEF Nice shopper bag will benefit UNICEF’s “Schools for Africa” and “Schools for Asia” initiatives in Malawi, Mozambique and China. The bag, designed in antique rose micro Guccissima leather, is available in Gucci stores worldwide and on www.gucci.com through May 2014.

• IKEA “Soft Toys for Ed-ucation” - For each purchase

from the Soft Toys for Edu-cation collection, available in stores and online through Jan. 4, the IKEA Foundation will donate approximately $1.35 to support UNICEF and Save the Children global education programs, includ-ing UNICEF’s “Schools for Africa” initiative. This year’s collection features new fairy tale-themed creatures, such as the NOJSIG Soft Toy Princess, KRULLIG Elf Soft Toy and VRIDVINGE Fairy Tail Wings, each for $4.99. For more information, visit www.ikeafoundation.org.

• Montblanc “Signature for Good” collection - Fea-turing special edition writing instruments, jewelry pieces and leather accessories, 10 percent of the retail price of every piece sold from Mont-blanc’s Signature for Good

collection will be donated to support UNICEF’s education programs for children in Af-rica, Asia and Latin America. Collection items are avail-able at www.montblanc.com through March 2014.

Gifts that inspireJoin in on the generous

spirit of the season by pur-chasing UNICEF Inspired Gifts in your loved one’s name. These gifts directly assist children in develop-ing countries with urgently needed items, such as mos-quito nets to protect them from malaria, or School-in-a-Box kits that provide all the supplies needed to set up a school anywhere.

K.I.N.D: Kids in Need of Desks offers desks for chil-dren in schools in Malawi, where four out of five stu-

dents do not have a desk or chair. Additionally, the K.I.N.D. fund is providing scholarships for girls in Ma-lawi. These items and more are available for purchase at www.unicefusa.org/inspired-gifts.

Other ways to giveThrough Delta’s SkyWish

program, SkyMiles(r) mem-bers can donate their un-used frequent flier miles to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF for travel in support of UNI-CEF’s lifesaving work for children. Visit www.delta.com/skywish to donate miles and find more information.

Make this year’s gift-giving experience more rewarding by choosing beautiful gifts loved ones will adore, and also support children around the world.

Stuff their stockings with budget friendly beauty gifts(Family Features) —

Stuffing stockings is a fun and memorable holiday tra-dition. This year, celebrate by filling stockings with bud-get friendly beauty gifts that friends and loved ones will truly adore.

Here are a few gift giving ideas:

• Scent: Embrace the mag-

ic of the winter season with Softsoap’s limited edition body washes, in Wintermint Snowfall and Sparkling Ber-ry Bubbly. The festive scents celebrate the spirit of the season while the moisture-rich formula will leave their skin feeling soft and smooth all winter long.

• Nails: Everyone wants to

add a little glitter and glam during the holidays. Give the women in your life a little sparkle with fun festive nail polishes in colors of red, gold and silver.

• Lips: Women like lip balms that moisturize and shine at the same time. Tuck a few tubes of flavored lip balms into their stocking.

Fun flavors include berry, gingerbread champagne or citrus.

• Rejuvenation: Create a themed stocking overflow-ing with special spa gifts. Tuck in herbal tea bags, dark chocolate truffles, a pretty bath loofah and a coordinat-ing bottle of moisturizing Softsoap body wash, which is

available in seasonal holiday fragrances and packaging. To see more fragrances, go to www.softsoap.com.

• Hair: Head accessories are all the rage so make sure to include at least one in each stocking. Black or red velvet are both traditional choices. Or, go a little more exciting with leopard prints, neon

colors or rhinestones. Both types are fun for all ages.

Once you’ve checked stocking stuffers off of your list, throw a few extra items into the shopping cart for yourself. After all, everyone deserves to shine, shimmer and to smell wonderful dur-ing the most magical time of year.

and new mp3 players to jam to while working out.

For the music guruFor the man in your life

A set of qual-ity headphones, such as the Beats by Dr. Dre Studio Over-Ear Headphones, truly delivers great sound. Other options for the men on your list include indoor-outdoor speaker sets, streaming media players and satellite radio systems.

Happy Holidays!

Deck out Christmas gifts with crafty decor(Family Features) — If

crossing the final gift off your shopping list means your holiday giving has only just begun, these ideas for creating unique and person-alized packaging may be just the ticket for some extra spe-cial flair under your tree this year.

Wrap up homemade good-ies fresh from your kitchen, or other small treasures, in Cupcake Cups adorned with the festive prints found in Die Cuts With a View Christmas Memories Stack scrapbooking paper, sold exclusively at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. Hot holiday gifts that up the cool factor(Family Features) — The

holidays should be filled with nothing but joy, but making the rounds to find the right gifts for everyone on your list can make the ho-ho-hos seem a little ho-hum. [0]

This season, make that stack of gift cards the “ghost of holidays past” and look for presents that embrace the unique style, personality and interests of the loved ones you’re buying for. Use this guide to help you find the hottest gifts and ideas to suit everyone on your list, and make you the coolest gifter south of the North Pole.

From vintage-themed ap-parel to outdoor adventures, these gifts are sure to be crowd pleasers:

Fashion-forward finds Motorcycle-inspired ap-

parel like leather jackets

and boots are all the rage for 2014, both on and off the runway. For that perfectly worn, vintage look that will thrill those with a bold, sexy style, whether they’re a mo-torcycle rider or not, check out the Harley-Davidson Men’s Vintage Leather Biker Jacket. Inspired by the pioneers of rocker biker culture, it boasts unrivaled classic rebel style with its heavy-weight vintage leather shell, distressed seams and chain-stitched embroidered graphics. Snatch this jacket and other fun gifts that are bursting from the seams with attitude from the Harley-Davidson online gift guide at www.H-D.com/Holiday.

Sky’s the limitHelp the adventurer in

your life unwrap an unfor-gettable experience by gift-

ing them an excursion, such as skydiving or rock climb-ing. Look for local options that are relevant to your re-gion - and perhaps accom-pany them if you dare. An outdoor adventure will be a welcome change, and a truly memorable merry maker.

One for the roadFor globe trotters, or those

who just wish they were, pre-pare them for departure with a travel bag packed with ac-cessories - including air miles towards a trip. Everybody appreciates a quality tote that can easily carry all their “must haves,” so look for a heavier duty canvas duffel and stuff it with items for their next adventure: pass-port cover, dopp kit and, of course, the means to get there with air miles or a pre-paid fuel card.

Barware that rocksNo matter how smooth

and delicious the cocktail is, it always tastes better when consumed out of fine bar-ware. Help those on your gift list express their inner rebel and toast their favorite holiday libations in style with the new sleek, etched Har-ley-Davidson Bar & Shield Rocks Glasses or Stemless Wine Glasses.

A new pursuit Treat a special someone

to a new experience or help them take a favorite pastime to the next level with the gift of a class or series of classes. Whether its snowboarding lessons, mixology for the one in pursuit of crafting the per-fect cocktail, grilling 101 for the guy or girl who loves to spice things up, or a learn-to-ride motorcycle safety class,

you’ll give a gift that keeps on giving by helping them learn something new.

These tips have you fully equipped for successful holi-

day gifting, so get to shop-ping and finding the best picks for those who matter most to you this holiday sea-son.

(BPT) — Finding the perfect gift for a loved one can be difficult at any time of year, but no time places more stress on finding a great gift than Christmas. It goes beyond finding the “perfect” gift for special days and holidays to giving something that reflects your affection or appreciation for the gifts you’ve received over time from that individ-ual.

Maybe you’re looking for a gift for that uncle who never missed an important event in your life. The one

who cheered you along as you got married, had babies, suffered losses. In his 60s now, he buys what he needs and appreciates everything.

Maybe your sister is the best sister in the world. She’s always there when you need a hug or a nudge. She’s crazy busy with her family and would just like one evening where someone else would take care of the dinner plans.

Or you have a grandma who says exactly what she thinks at all times - for bet-ter and worse. Yet every-one loves and respects the

wisdom she shares at every family gathering. Her needs are few but she loves it when you pop in on the weekend for a meal and a chat.

Do these people sound familiar? There are many ways you can say, “thank you,” to these and other spe-cial people in your life. Food is probably the best gift you can give people who have everything because they will be able to eat it, share it and enjoy it with others. Wheth-er close by or far away, a wide selection of food gift catalogs are available all

year long to stir your curios-ity and provide inspiration.

The Kansas City Steak Company has great food op-tions for those hard-to-shop-for-people in your life. Want to create a special combina-tion package? Check out the favorite gift pack options for inspiration. From Big Daddy Combos of succulent steaks to offerings that in-clude seafood and chicken, you’re sure to find just the right selection for your spe-cial someone - and save a lit-tle money at the same time.

For the women in your

world who enjoy gourmet meals, they’ll love the deli-cious gift that comes straight to their front door from your heart. They’ll get a night off and still serve up phe-nomenal meals like chicken wellington, marinated king salmon filets, super-trimmed filet mignon and more.

And what about that spe-cial uncle in your life? Well, beef is still tops with men for food gifts and there’s a cornucopia of gourmet meals just a short click away. Kansas City steaks are made

from the world’s finest west-ern Kansas corn-fed beef, aged to perfection and the perfect choice for the person who has everything.

If you’re still not sure, you can always choose a gift cer-tificate and let your loved one pick a gift that will be a perfect reminder of just how much you care about them.

So in the next few weeks and months when it’s time to think about giving that per-fect gift to someone who has everything, think food. It’s a winner every time.

Shake up snack time with a pop of flavor inspiration (BPT) — Popcorn is one

of the oldest snacks known to mankind. The fluffy ker-nels were a favorite pastime long before the first motion picture. In fact, it is believed the oldest ear of popping corn was over 5,000 years old. Now that’s staying power.

Today, Americans eat around 16 billion quarts of popcorn every year making it the nation’s favorite snack food by volume. Naturally rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, low calorie air-popped popcorn has more iron than eggs and more fiber than traditional salty snacks. In addition to being healthy, it’s wallet-friendly. For about 25 cents, you can pop enough kernels to satisfy a family of four. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, what makes popcorn the greatest snack is its ability to adapt to consumers’ ever-changing pal-ates.

While kernel purists may stick to the simple pleasures of natural popcorn, many opt for the quintessential comfort of butter and salt. However, the more adventurous taste buds seek a bit more excitement and flavor from their popcorn. Popping outside the box, fans across the country are shak-ing up their popcorn with the

sweet, spicy and bold flavors of all natural seasoning blends and alternative ingredients. Often available at movie the-aters, popcorn seasonings such as Kernel Season’s are becom-ing more and more popular and have made their way to household pantries. Makes sense, considering 70 percent of popcorn consumption takes place at home. Now, the en-tire family can customize their popcorn at home long before the trailers end with just a few simple shakes of seasoning.

Jasmin Fine, food and life-style blogger at 1 Fine Cook-ie, knows there is more than one way to eat popcorn. A long-time pop-aholic, she has been reinventing traditional popcorn and sharing her unique recipes with others. Her secret, Fine always starts off with freshly air-popped popcorn and keeps plenty of Kernel Season’s jars on hand for that extra kick of guilt-free flavor. A recipe for every sea-son, Fine’s popcorn creations are sure to convert even the most traditionalists of pop-corn eaters.

Just in time for the holi-days, Fine’s jazzed up popcorn shimmers with red glitter and delights with seasonal treats.

Holiday Season! With warm wishes and gratitude thisholiday season from our entire staff. We thank you for the privilege of serving the Osceola area.

Get crafty with edible holiday appetizers(BPT) — Don’t worry,

Mom. In this case, it’s OK to play with your food. The latest online social media craze features awe-inspiring galleries of edible art, show-casing everyday ingredients transformed into munchable holiday masterpieces.

This season, whether you’re looking to revamp the relish tray or simply keep the kids occupied with a fun project, a few holiday-friend-ly staples are all you need to let your creativity take flight.

Take, for instance, Califor-nia black ripe olives. Known for their versatility and mild flavor, black olives are a party favorite for a reason. And with 95 percent of the nation’s ripe olives grown on family farms in California, they’re a truly all-American ingredient, too. They’re also

the perfect building block for edible holiday treats.

Get in on the fun with an easy and adorable-to-look-at recipe that uses black olives, cream cheese, pretzels and a few other common ingredi-ents to create an unforget-table herd of holiday cheer. In fact, this is one reindeer game anyone can play.

raisinsPowdered sugar (optional)Kale (optional)Mushrooms (optional)

Directions:With a small, sharp knife,

cut wonton wrappers into “antlers.” Place on a baking sheet and coat with cook-ing spray. Bake for 3 to 5 minutes at 350 F, or until lightly browned. Place cream cheese into two sandwich-sized reclosable bags. Snip 1/8-inch off the corner of one and 1/16-inch off the second. With the bag and the 1/8-inch hole, squeeze

cream cheese into colos-sal olives. Using a bamboo skewer, make a hole in the large olives. Break a pretzel stick in half and press into hole and into colossal olive. Press together to form the head. Make four holes in the colossal olive with a bamboo skewer and push four broken pretzel sticks in to form legs. Squeeze cream cheese with the small-hole to form eyes. Make tiny slits with a paring knife in the top of the head and insert wonton antlers. Make a hole in the large ol-ive (head) and insert a small sliver of carrot for the nose. Use a small piece of raisin to create pupils.

To create a winter setting, dust kale leaves with pow-dered sugar and snip the tops off mushrooms to simulate large boulders.

Top 5 tips to simplify holiday baking(BPT) — From cookies

to cupcakes, the holidays just aren’t complete without freshly-baked treats to gift, serve and enjoy. But baking isn’t always a piece of cake, whether you’re an expert or novice baker. So this year, as you preheat your oven and prepare to whip up dozens of your favorite recipes, check out these five helpful tips to ensure your holiday cookies don’t crumble.

• Pre-freeze cookie dough. Freeze cut-out cookies for 10 minutes before baking. They’ll keep their shape bet-ter during baking and also rise slightly higher.

• Use parchment paper. The versatility of parchment paper allows for fuss-free baking. It can be used to line baking sheets for evenly-cooked treats and makes cleanup a breeze.

• Bake on the center rack. To allow for the most even heat circulation, bake your holiday cookies on the ov-

en’s center rack. Addition-ally, don’t over-crowd the oven. This can cause uneven baking, resulting in under-baked or burnt cookies.

• Use an air-tight contain-er. After baking, place your cookies in an air-tight con-tainer before they are com-pletely cooled. Doing so will prevent them from drying out and will keep them nice and chewy.

• Stick with a simple rec-ipe. If you’re short on time or an inexperienced baker, stick with a simple recipe that you know will turn out great and is sure to please. Rolo Pretzel Delights are a fan favorite and can be made in less than 30 minutes.

Rolo Pretzel DelightsIngredients:Small pretzelsRolo Chewy Caramels in

paper or foil.Place one pretzel for each

pretzel treat desired on pre-pared sheet. Top each pret-zel with one unwrapped Rolo Chewy Caramels in

Milk Chocolate.Bake three to five minutes

or until caramel piece begins to soften, but not melt. Re-move from oven; top with ei-ther pecan half or additional

pretzel. Allow the treats to cool completely.

Fun home entertainment gifts for less than $100(BPT) — What do most

people want for the holi-days? Technology and home entertainment gifts are highly sought after, meaning gift-givers have plenty of op-portunities to get an impres-sive present. If you think you need to spend a lot to get a great gift, think again. There are many great options for less than $100.

As more and more large flatscreens and smart TVs take over the family televi-sion room, the list of products that improve the watching or listening experience just keeps expanding. Brighten the holidays for your loved ones with these fun gift ideas that cost less than $100.

Speaker systemsLarge flatscreens are not

known for having great speakers. A new generation

of speakers and surround sound systems is now avail-able to raise the quality of the sound to match the qual-ity of the picture. One of the best value-priced items is the Vizeo 40-inch Home The-ater Sound Bar, which retails for $99.

Not only is it a great val-ue, but when it is connected it to a digital TV, it fills the room with up to 95 decibels of clear and exciting sound. It’s available at Best Buy and other electronics stores, as well as online.

AntennasFor those who want to cut

the cable or satellite TV cord and save up to $1,200 per year, the powerful Winegard FlatWave Amped antenna pulls in the clearest VHF and UHF broadcast channels from up to 50 miles away.

It’s razor-thin and is the most advanced dual band an-tenna on the market today. It weighs just over two ounces and because broadcast sig-nals are not compressed like those from cable, satellite and telephone companies,- the picture quality is closer to true HDTV. It retails for $89.99 and is available from Winegard, Costco or Ama-zon and requires no monthly fees.

Universal remotesFor those with a collection

of remote controls to oper-ate their home entertain-ment system, a universal re-mote is the perfect gift.

Consider the Logitech Harmony Ultimate Hub, a Bluetooth device that turns users’ iPhone and Android smartphones or tablets into the ultimate universal re-

mote control. The Hub also allows the control of ap-plications in popular game consoles such as PS3, Wii, or Xbox 360. Anyone can download the free Harmony App to their smartphone to use with the Hub, which is a separate device that inter-faces with more than 225,000

home theater and entertain-ment devices.

The free app can be down-loaded from the relevant app stores online, and the Hub is available at electronics stores or directly from Logi-tech.com. The Logitech Har-mony Ultimate Hub is avail-able for $99.99.

There are many fun prod-ucts on the market today for those who want to get the most from their home en-tertainment systems. Keep these gift ideas in mind for your friends and family and you’re sure to be one of the best presents under the tree.
