OSRAM lamp technology in the

Light is now used in a very wide range of

industries as a technically, economically

and ecologically superior alternative to

conventional processes. It is used, for

example for:

• curing

• drying

• thermo-forming

• artificial ageing and

• sterilising.

There are also a number of classic

industrial applications for light which

would be impossible without these

special lamps. These include:

• exposure of printing plates

• exposure of photo-resist material in

the manufacturing process of printed

circuit boards

• fluorescence excitation for material

analysis

Light for heating, drying,curing and more

Infra-red lamps.

SICCATHERM® lamps emit a high propor-

tion of infra-red light and a low proportion

of visible light. They are used primarily in

agriculture for livestock breeding and in

the food processing industry for pasteuris-

ing and drying.

Deep heat.

Infra-red lamps emit short-wave radiation

in the infra-red range. The heat is there-

fore deep-acting and has little impact on

the skin itself.

UV lamps.

UV lamps are special discharge lamps.

HQV® lamps and fluorescent lamps with

black glass bulbs are available for all

material testing applications that require

fluorescence analysis.

Germicidal lamps.

HNS® lamps, special low-pressure mer-

cury lamps that emit short-wave UVC

radiation, have a wide range of uses from

disinfecting materials in the packaging

industry to sterilising rooms. Microorgan-

isms are killed by the UVC radiation. The

high UVC irradiance of these lamps is also

used in the microelectronics industry for

erasing EPROM memory chips.

of the damaging radiation of natural sun-

light, particularly in the UVB and UVC

ranges, is reduced from their light.

Light that does you good.

Sun lamps for home use, such as ULTRA-

VITALUX®, offer a complete mix of radia-

tion similar to that of natural sunlight so it

has the same positive biological effects on

the skin and the body in general.

Sun tan lamps.

Ultramed UV high pressure lamps have

been designed specifically to emit the

UVA radiation responsible for skin pigmen-

tation, with a balanced proportion also of

UVB radiation. The UVA radiation directly

stimulates the skin to produce pigmen-

tation, and its effects are noticeable imme-

diately after exposure. The short-wave

UVB radiation is needed for long-term

pigmentation so that the skin retains its

tan.

Sun lamps for home use,such as ULTRA-VITALUX®,offer a complete mix of radiation similar to that of natural sunlight.

SICCATHERM® infra-red lamps are used for raisingpoultry, pigs, calves and foals.

How the lamps work in raising animals:Animals typically grow faster owing to their greaterappetite and improved extraction of nutrients in theirfodder. They develop increased resistance to dis-ease and no longer crowd together for warmth.Breeding losses are therefore reduced. Hay remainsdry and stalls stay clean and hygienic for longer. Thisincreases the efficiency of the entire livestock opera-tion.

These infra-red lamps are also used for varnish andpaint curing, burn-in processes and distillation.

How the lamps work in drying: The infra-red radiation penetrates the material to bedried and is absorbed by it. There is virtually no heatdissipated to the surrounding air. The advantage isthat the entire material is heated, not just the sur-face. The drying process is so efficient that it isequivalent to enlarging the evaporation area severaltimes over.

SICCATHERM® are also used in food processing forpasteurising and drying.

THERATHERM® infra-red heat lampsTHERATHERM® infra-red lamps emit short-wave ra-diation in the infra-red range. A specially pigmentedred filter gives the lamp a pleasant and even glow.The parabolic internal reflector focuses the radiatedenergy into a high-intensity beam. The lamps emittheir full thermal output as soon as they areswitched on and have a very high life expectancy.

ULTRA-VITALUX® sun lampThe ULTRA-VITALUX® lamp produces a mix of radia-tion very similar to that of natural sunlight and canhave the same positive effects on the body as thesun. This blend of radiation is generated by a quartzdischarge tube and a tungsten filament. The bulb ismade of special glass which allows only that part ofthe output that is contained in natural sunlight topass through.

EVERSUN® lamps were developed especially for usein solariums and sun beds. They are available inthree versions depending on the desired effect:

• EVERSUN® 79 and 79 R with high UVA emittancefor direct pigmentation and a low UVB componentfor creating new pigment. This UVB component isvery low, however, so the danger of sunburn isvery low.

• EVERSUN® SUPER with a sun-like effect thanks tothe high UVA component and balanced proportionUVB. Strict adherence to a suntanning schedulewill result in durable pigmentation, a fresh andlong-lasting holiday tan and a high safety factor forthe skin. EVERSUN® SUPER enables exposureperiods to be kept particularly short and is there-fore ideal for professional use.

Owing to the high radiation intensity in the ultra-violet range from 280 to 400 nm range achieved bythe use of special filler substances, these high-quality high-pressure UV lamps can be used withvarious filters and reflectors. The efficiency of suchsystems is then very high.

Applications:• The high radiation intensity in the UVA range

encourages tanning through direct pigmentation• A balanced proportion of UVB radiation helps form

new pigmentation to achieve a lasting tan,depending on skin type.

Because of their sun-like radiation properties, ULTRA-VITALUX® lamps are used in industrial material testing,particularly for testing materials and equipment indifferent environments to DIN 50 010:• Suitability for use in the tropics• Artificial ageing• Weathering• Changes in material properties, reliability or service

life under particular climatic conditions, etc.

The total irradiance of the sun on the surface of theEarth at noon on a sunny June day is around 1 kW/m2

(annual average solar radiation at a latitude of 50˚ N is200 W/m2). An array of 16 lamps per square metre ata distance of about 50 cm between the bulb crownand the irradiated object achieves a similar uniformirradiance.

ULTRA-VITALUX® lamps are used for curing plastics.Modern plastics are cured by exposure to UV radia-tion. Special photo initiators cause polymerisation inplastics when the plastics are exposed to UV radiation.The advantages of the process are as follows:• Only one substance is needed. There is no need for

mixing and dosing• Under normal indoor lighting, processing times can

be almost any length• Pot times are no problem• Rapid curing with UV radiation• Clean processing in industry, workshops and DIY

ULTRA-VITALUX® lamps are suitable for the exposureof photo-resists. In electronics the pattern of printedcircuits is transferred by means of UV exposure onto aphoto-resistive layer. After development, the boardcan be etched, leaving only the conductor paths.The advantages of the process are as follows:• Simple handling• High UV content

Various materials have the ability to convert invisible ultra-violet radiation into visible light (fluorescence effect). HQV®, L 18/73 and L 36/73 are lamps that emit long-wave UV radiation and therefore excite fluorescence. They are therefore ideal for all applica-tions involving fluorescence analysis.

The lamps generate radiation only in the long-wave UV range between 300 nm and 400 nm. Visible radiation is almost completely absorbed.

HQV® lamps are normally operated on 230 V ac with a choke; the fluorescent lamps are operated with a choke and starter. Operating HQV® lamps without an outer bulb or with a damaged outer bulb is dangerous and therefore not permitted.

Material research with fluorescence solutions, for example for detecting hairline cracks in engine shafts

• Textile industryMaterial analysis, for example the composition andnature of additives to woollen goods, detection ofotherwise invisible stains and dry-cleaning marks
