UNF's MASCOT - THE OSPREY
The osprey was adopted officially as the University of North Florida's mascot in 1979.
A member of the hawk family, the osprey's most distinctive feature is a wide, dark, irregular stripe extending from the base of its bill and merging with its dark neck feathers, giving the appearance of a mask across the osprey's eyes.
The wingspread of the osprey - four and a half to six feet - is almost equal to that of the America bald eagle and
routinely exceeds that of the largest hawks.
Ospreys have highly specialized feet for catching fish, their exclusive food; they have spike-like scales on the bottom of their feet for holding their slippery prey. When attacking,
the osprey hovers until a fish nears the
surface of the water, then plunges feet first into the water, grasping the fish in its talons.
Due to its size, strength and remarkably sharp talons, the osprey has no known enemies.

Coach "Z" and the Ospreys mbark on their fifth season of
competition with the challenge of nailing down that elusive NCAA Tournament bid. After being ranked in the top five in the country in offense and defense at various times throughout the first four years and an appearance in the Sunshine State Conference Championship game last season, the future is bright for the UNF program.
In four short years, Zvosec has led the Osprey program to numerous victories over top twenty teams - including three last season - and his team finished the 1995-

96 campaign ranked seventh in total defense. In that time, Zvosec's teams have also produced five players who have continued their playing careers at the professional level. Additionally, all but one of his former players who have exhausted their eligibility have either graduated, are playing professionally or are still in school pursuing their degrees.
The run at the Sunshine State Conference Championship in 1995-96 and knocking off ranked teams such as Rollins and Valdosta State rank as a couple of the many successes Zvosec has experienced since beginning the UNF program in 1992-93. In the four years, Zvosec's team has been ranked as high as #1 in scoring nationally and as high as #4 in defense nationally, showing his versatility in being able to successfully adjust his team's gameplan.
Not only has his teams produced on the court, but they have performed in the community as well. Through the Winner's Circle program, his staff and team have spoken at more than 100 elementary, middle and high schools. In
1995-96, the Ospreys will begin a new mentoring program called Adopt-ASchool with Arlington Heights Elementary. Finally, Zvosec and the team are active in the battle against cancer. This year he has initiated the Common Cents against Cancer program to raise money for the V Foundation. "We feel it is very important that our players become active
8
participants in the community," Zvosec said.
Prior to coming to UNF, Zvosec was selected to rebuild a dormant St. Francis College (N .Y.) NCAA Division I program in 1988. The team had gone two decades without a winning season, so the undertaking was a challenge. As the youngest Division I coach in the country at 27, Zvosec went to work putting the pieces together. In his third season, he was able to turn the program around and produce their first winning season since 1978. Along the way, they recorded the most Division I wins, the most conference wins and the most road wins in school history. For this remarkable turnaround, he was named the Northeast Conference Coach of the Year. Coach Z left St. Francis as the fifth-winningest coach of all time.
Prior to becoming a head coach at St. Francis, he was an assistant coach at Loyola (Md.) College, Bowling Green State University, and Defiance College.
A member of the NABC, Coach Z was selected to take part as an instructor at the YES clinic in Louisville, Ky. - one of only 16 coaches in the country. He also serves as the director of the Coach Z North Florida Basketball School.
He received his Master of Education degree from Bowling Green State University in 1986 and Bachelor of Science Degree from Defiance (Ohio) College in 1983.
Coach Z and his wife, Sandy, have two sons, Colin and Devin, and a daughter, Kailey.

Basketball Q & A with Z
Q& A with Coach ZQ: .What would you consider to be the highlight of the 1995-96 season? A: Finishing runner-up in the Sunshine State Conference tournament while changing our team from one that tries to out-score opponents to one that plays tough defense.
Q: When you were hired at UNF to start the program, you developed a five-year plan for the Ospreys. What are your expectations for the 1996-97 campaign given that this is the fifth year of the program? A: We have achieved quite a bit in the first four years of the program, culminating with last year's fantastic finish.
This year brings us a combination of the grittiness of the past with the youthful enthusiasm of the future. With three seniors and nine freshman and sophomores on this year's team, it gives us the opportunity to make even bigger strides in the upcoming season.
Q: What is the biggest difference between this team and teams you've had at UNF in the past? A: This is by far our biggest team at the University of North Florida. We anticipate playing with a lineup of three forwards as opposed to past lineups which consisted of three guards.
Q: What are the keys to success this season? A: Our biggest key is our field goal defense. Last season, we were 12-2 when we held opponents to less than 45% shooting from the field. Another big key will be on the boards; filling the shoes of Chris Sneed, the school's leading rebounder, will be a tough task. We will also need to force teams to be patient on offense and shoot from the perimeter.
Q: What is one of your team's biggest strengths this season?
9
A: Our mix of youth and experience. Our seniors - Chris Patterson, Chris Lee and Kyle Hesting -will have an important role in leading this team.
Q: 1995-96 represented a fundamental change in philosophy as your team led the Sunshine State Conference in defense and gave up 16 less points per game than in any other year. Was this change a conscious one and how successful do you feel it was? A: The change was necessitated by our personnel through
graduation. We had to become a team that stops the opposition instead of trying to simply out-score them. This change helped us to accomplish quite a bit last year.
Q: What do you foresee as the biggest challenge this year's squad will have to face? A: Our biggest challenge will be to learn how to use our new-found height advantage in our overall game, both defensively and offensively.

Ospreys Set ToClimb Final Step ToNCAAS One game from the "big dance" last year, Ospreys now ready for challenge
T he Osprey basketball team that came just five points away from advancing to the
NCAA Division II National Championship looks _to complete the mission in 1996-97.
The Ospreys' task will not be an easy one after losing its all-time leading scorer in Chris Sneed and team leading scorer Phil Caple, but with three returning starters and tremendous height in the frontcourt, UNF has the talent to complete its postseason run.
Leading the Ospreys this season will be senior forward Chris Patterson. Patterson averaged nine points and 4.4 rebounds a game for UNF in his junior campaign and came up big in tournament situations, earning AllTournament Team honors at the
Marriott Classic and at the Sunshine State Conference tournament.
Junior Jamaal Williams and senior point guard Kyle Hesting are the other returning starters for the Ospreys. Williams, a former All-SSC Freshman player, averaged 7.6 points per game and 3.6 rebounds a game, while Hesting led the team with 4.3 assists per game.
"With Chris' emergence and the maturity of some of
the freshmen
CAPTAIN CHRIS: Senior forward Chris Patterson, the Ospreys' team captain in 1996-97, will lead by example after earning AllTournament honors twice last season.
and sophomores, we will be able to play with a bigger frontline than in the past," Zvosec said.
That frontline will include returnees Jason Brafford, Dan Phoebus, George McCleod and Gary Cornell.
Among the newcomers expected to step into the void in the middle are transfer Joe Warnke, freshman Cory Caplinger and freshman Ben Rodgers.
"This is definitely the biggest team we've ever had at UNF," Zvosec said.
The backcourt of Williams and Resting will have plenty of competition with returning
senior Chris Lee and sophomore Jarrod Bulleit, as well as newcomers Jerry Noll, Greg Seibel, Ian Foster and Brodie Waters.
UNF opens up the season right away with a big test as they play in the Mt. Olive Tip-Off Pickle Classic in North Carolina, facing former national champion University of D.C., then return home to host nationally-ranked Pfeiffer in the Sea Turtle Classic.
"In order for us to be successful this season," Zvosec said, "our seniors have to play like seniors."
The mix of experience and youth could be just the right burst to get the Ospreys past that final hurdle and into the NCAA Championships.
THE HESTING GAME: Senior point guard Kyle Hesting leads the Osprey offense into 1996-97 after averaging a team-high 4.6 assists per game last season.

Basketball UNF Arena
UNF Arena - - -T he University of North
Florida Arena, completed in January 1993, serves as home
for the Osprey basketball and volleyball teams. The $9.2 million, 5,800-seat facility also serves as the site for graduation each semester, various concerts, camps, and intramural programs.
For the past three falls, the Orlando Magic have used the facility for their training camp, culminating in a scrimmage that served as a fund raiser for the University of North Florida.
The teaching gymnasium houses the offices of Athletics and Recreation, as well as the training room, two classrooms, a kinesiology lab, a large multipurpose room, ticket box office windows, two concession areas and a Foundation Board Room which overlooks the main floor.

Defense keys success in 1995-96
Entering the 1995-96 season, the Ospreys were known for
being able to put points on the board. A change in philosophy led to a change in styles for the University of North Florida's basketball team, and that style brought the Ospreys to the brink of an NCAA Division II Tournament bid in 1995-96.
UNF opened the season going 4-2, including wins over Wingate and Savannah State, then hit a hot streak as the Ospreys knocked off nationally-ranked Valdosta State at home 76-7 L, then traveled to the Marriott Classic in Charlotte, N.C., and knocked off Spring Hill and Mars Hill en route to a runnerup finish in the tournament.
score 1,000 points, surpassing that mark on Feb. l O against Florida Southern. Sneed also led the SSC in field goal percentage (68.8%) and was fourth in the conference in rebounding with 8.0 per game. Seniors Phil Caple (team
leading 13.4 ppg) and Jesse Hudson (6.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg) also ended exceptional careers at UNF in 1995-96.
Chris Patterson and Caple were All-Tournament honorees at the Marriott Classic in Charlotte, N.C. Caple earned SSC Player of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 29, while Sneed was named Player of the Week for Mar. 4, the week of the Conference tournament.
Starting the Sunshine State Conference schedule, the Ospreys lost their first two games before winning five of their next seven, incJuding road wins at Saint Leo and nationally-ranked Rollins.
SNEED SAYS FAREWELL: UNF's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, Chris Sneed finished his final season as the Sunshine State Conference's Tournament MVP.
Junior guard Kyle Resting led the Ospreys with 4.34 assists per game (sixth in the SSC) and 1.79 steals per game (also sixth in the SSC) . Junior Chris Lee continued his hot shooting from three-point range, hitting 37% (26-70) from beyond the arc, and sophomore Jamaal Williams chipped in 7.6 points and 3.6 UNF struggled at the end
of the regular season, dropping six straight games, but come tournament time, the No. 6 seeded Ospreys were ready to play. Sporting a defense ranked in the Top 10 nationally in points allowed, the Ospreys beat the No. 3 seed Rollins 56-5 I in the first round, despite shooting just 39% from the field. UNF continued the run with a 61-52 win over No. 2 seed Eckerd in the semifinals, advancing to the Sunshine State Conference championship game against No. 1 seed Florida Southern.
In a tight defensive battle, the Ospreys hung close, leading most of the first half and staying within a few points until disaster struck in the second half. Junior forward Chris Patterson and senior center Chris
Sneed - both All-Tournament players during the conference championships - collided going for a rebound. Patterson suffered a concussion and did not return as the Ospreys fell to the Moccasins 53-49.
The tenacious UNF defense allowed just 64.8 points per game during the 1995-96 season, leading the Sunshine State Conference and ranking seventh in the nation in that category. The total bettered UNF's own season record for points allowed per game by 16 points.
Chris Sneed finished his stellar UNFcareer earning second-team AllConference honors and the MVP award of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Sneed became the first UNF men's basketball player to
39
rebounds per game at both guard and forward.
"Our ability to ride out the rough waters and finish so strongly was a true example of turning adversity into advantage in 1995-96," Head Coach Rich Zvosec said. "It was a true reflection of our players' characters and ability to persevere."

sunshine StateConference
Championship FSC 53, UNF 49
LAKELAND, Fla. - The Cinderella story of the University of North Florida Ospreys came to an ugly end in the Sunshine State Conference Championship game, though not necessarily on the scoreboard.
The No. 6 seed in the tournament, the Ospreys took their nationally-ranked defense to the Moccasins and controlled the tempo for most of the afternoon.
Top seed Florida Southern, looking to return to the NCAA Division II Tournament, had defeated the Ospreys in both meetings during the regular season, but needed double overtime to defeat UNF in their last meeting on Feb. l 0.
Overtime looked like a certainty with the nip-and-tuck battle between the Ospreys, led by senior center and Tournament MVP Chris Sneed, and the Moes, led by First-Team All-Conference standout Anatatius Clark.
With two minutes remaining and the Ospreys down by just three points, disaster struck as Sneed and junior forward Chris Patterson collided hustling for a loose ball. Patterson, the Ospreys' leading scorer in the game with 18 points, suffered a concussion and had to leave the game.
Florida Southern closed out the game and took the Conference championship, but the Ospreys took home to Jacksonville respect from the other Conference schools.
Patterson was named to the All-Tournament team, and Sneed picked up SSC Player of the Week honors for his MVP performance.

Prior to coming to UNF, Zvosec was selected to rebuild a dormant St. Francis College (N.Y .) NCAA Division I program in 1988. The team had gone two decades without a winning season, so the undertaking was a challenge. As the youngest Di vision I coach in the country at 27, Zvosec went to work putting the pieces together. In his third season, he was able to turn the program around and produce their firs t winning season since 1978.

The University of North Florida is not alone in providing the Jacksonville area with fine athletics - the Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the NFL' s two newest expansion franchises, joining the Barracudas (pro basketball - USBL), the Lizard Kings (pro hockey - ECHL) and the Suns (pro baseball - AA Southern League) as the city's professional sports franchises. Yearly events include golf's "fifth major," the Tournament Players Champion-
ship, the Jacksonville River Run, the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament and two college football games, the traditional "borderwar"between the University of Florida and the University of Georgia, and the January 1st Toyota Gator Bowl, hosting teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big East Conference.
The ATP Tour and the PGA Tour headquarters, as well as the PGA Tour Hall of Fame, also call the Jacksonville area home.
Recently selected as one of the top 20 places to live by Money Magazine, Jacksonville also offers a variety of cultural, entertainment and recreational opportunities for its residents, visitors and college students. The Cummer Art Gallery and the Jacksonville Museum of Science and History highlight several area museums, the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra plays several concert series in the area while the Florida Theatre, the Civic Au-
