Our Saviour Lutheran Church • Green Bay, Wisconsin 1 Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (Vol. 11, Issue 11) November 2009 Living Your Thanks Christmas does not follow Thanksgiving! Sure it does. First comes New Year’s, then Easter, then the Fourth of July, then Labor Day, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas. Ask any retailer downtown or shopper at the mall, ask any worker who knows his holidays off with pay, ask any kid who is waiting for presents under the tree, and they’ll tell you that Christmas definitely follows Thanksgiving. So am I missing something? Hopefully I didn’t! What follows Thanksgiving is thanks-living! On Thanksgiving, churches will be filled with people who remember all the blessings that God has showered on them in the past year — people who remember to give thanks. But at the same time, churches will be filled with people who forget that being in church on Thanksgiving and singing “Now Thank We All Our God” is only half the deal. Thanksgiving must be followed by thanks-living. One way we live our thanks is by praising God at all times. Psalm 34 says, “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips” (v. 1). Whether we are in the money or in the unemployment line, whether we’ve experienced a gain in our stock portfolio or experienced a loss in the family, whether we’re the picture of health or poster children for everything that ails us, we are experiencing God’s mercy in every moment. Our financial, physical, or emotional condition does not change our spiritual condition. We are at all times the redeemed, restored, forgiven children of God by faith in Christ. We are at all times, whether good or bad, the heirs of heaven because of the work of Jesus Christ. We are at all times, whether we are cleaning up in the stock market or wiping up tears from our eyes, the most blessed people in the world. Our every Sunday worship, our everyday language, and our everyday attitude ought to reflect that reality! Responding to the invitation to “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come,” by being in God’s house on the fourth Thursday of November — that’s Thanksgiving. Praising the Lord at all times in your life, whether those times are good or bad — that’s thanks-living. Another way we live our thanks is by sharing the message of salvation. King David exclaimed in Psalm 34: “Let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me, let us exalt his name together” (2,3). He was so thankful to God for his blessings that he wanted everyone to hear about it and rejoice with him. It will be wonderful to see churches filled with people for the holiday at the end of this month. That’s Thanksgiving. Sharing the message of salvation with our neighbors, co-workers, friends at school — now that’s thanks-living. Christmas doesn’t follow Thanksgiving — thanks- living does. May we go home living the thanks that we have given God by praising him at all times and sharing the message of Christ with others. Pastor Greg Hovland

Most of us could recite the liturgyfrom the hymnal by heart. After all, weare Lutherans! We have potlucks, drinkcoffee, and fight a nod during thesermons. Even if we lost our sight, weknow exactly where our pew is, evenduring the darkness of a Good FridayTenebrae or a candlelit Christmas Eve

service. We can still recite parts ofLuther’s Small Catechism [if prompted]and pretty much know the answer to,“What does this mean?” We can makeand eat potato salad with our eyesclosed and know that we are MissouriSynod but don’t know where in theworld that name came from.Nothing much changes for we

Lutherans and if it does, we will be thefirst to wonder why, since if it isn’tbroke, why change it. We have fondmemories, don’t we, of the old blackand white Luther movie and saw noneed to make a new one in color. But sometimes things do change,

and for the good even! Up until thelate 1990s, Our Saviour knew of onlyone recipe for worship, one of thestandard liturgies from the hymnals. But then… change! Like taking richdark coffee, we poured that sametraditional message we know and loveso well into a new colorful mug. Bythat I mean, the Praise Service. I’dhave to check but I think we have longpassed the ten-year mark since theguitars and drums, electronickeyboards and wind instruments haveaccompanied the singers at the middleservice on Sundays. That service was a hit from day

one, and continues to warm the heartsof worshippers to this day. Every oncein awhile I realize, there is a whole

generation of folks who know onlythat service.A few weeks ago at a Thursday

evening worship service one of ouryoung acolytes was sitting on thebench near the front of church. Theservice was about to begin. Theyleaned over to me and said, “Is this oneof those services where everyonekneels?” Then I saw the liturgicalservice with new eyes! For what was once the one and only

form of worship, liturgical and out ofthe hymnal, now for some is somethingthey may never have experienced. Thesame could be said by any other youngperson who may be at the PraiseService for the first time, “Is that one ofthe services with guitars?”Should you and your family be in a

pattern of attending one form ofworship at OSLC, we encourage youto mix it up a bit. Consider coming toone of the other services, just for theexperience. There is outstandingmusic at each, whole other mini-congregations and new folks you willmeet at each service. God has blessedus richly here at Our Saviour. We’lllook forward to seeing you inworship… where every service willbe, “One of those services where wehear the Good News of the Saviour”.

Aminister is driving to New York from New Jersey tosee a show and he’s stopped for speeding. The statetrooper smells alcohol on his breath, sees an empty winebottle on the seat next to him and politely asks, “Sir, haveyou been drinking?” The minister replies, “Just water.”The trooper asks, “Then, sir, why do I smell wine?”

The minister looks at the bottle on the seat and exclaims,“Oh, my Good Lord, He’s done it again!”

Again?

Once upon a time, a man went for a ride out in thecountry with a good friend. They drove off the mainroad and through a grove of orange trees to a mostlyuninhabited stretch of land. The driver stopped the carand began to describe vividly what he was going tobuild here. He wanted his friend to buy acreage.“I can handle the main project myself, but it will

take all my money, and I would like you to buy thesurrounding acreage because in the next five years itwill increase in value hundreds and hundreds of times.”The man mumbled something about a tight money

situation, some deal he was in the process of making, while thinking: who in the world is going to drive 30miles for this crazy project? This isn’t common sense –this is idiocy. He said he’d think about it for awhile. Disappointed

the driver started up the car, “If you don’t move rightnow, you’re going to be sorry.”And so it was that Art Linkletter turned down the

opportunity to buy the land that surrounded what isnow Disneyland, the land his friend Walt Disney hadencouraged him to buy.Likewise, when you and I are faced with what

appears to be “nothing”, God’s creativity can makesomething wonderful from what appears to beemptiness. That is just what He did at creation, and Hewill do that in your life too, no matter what you face.

OSLC 2009AnnualBudgetUpdateThe OSLC boards and committees have submittedtheir budget requests for 2010. Our Treasurer, GayPivonka, is assembling the expense data along with aforecast of receipts into a budget format. Over thenext month, Gay will work with the Board ofPersonnel & Finance and the Church PlanningCouncil to prepare a balanced 2010 budget forpresentation and approval at the Annual Voters’Meeting in December.

The following update on the 2009 budget provides aglimpse of what to expect in 2010:

• 2009 OSLC BudgetReceipts (see Chart#1) – The totalbudget for 2009 is$673,000. Thesources for receiptsare the traditionalgiving (UnifiedBudget Receipts),making up 81% ofthe total receipts, and non-traditionalsources (such as thePackers servers, kitchen / coffee bar services and rentals), makingup the other 19% of the total receipts.

• 2009 OSLC Budget Expenses (see Chart #2) –Close to 80% of the total budget expenses comefrom the following three areas, i.e., staff salariesand benefits (39%), mortgage payments (23%) andtrustee expenses (17%). Missions (9%) provide to

the LCMSDistrict, NEWLutheran HighSchool, TrinityLutheran Schooland missionarywork. Theremaining 13%of the budgetexpenses comefrom the othertraditionalservices (such

as altar guild, worship / music, youth, education, and evangelism).

• 2009 OSLC Giving through September (see Charts3 and 4) – Actual year to date giving throughSeptember is 9% short of budget (approximately$37,000). The shortfalls will likely increase duringOctober andNovember, based on themonthlyshortfallsover the first9 months.Somerecovery willbe made in December, but not enough to make upthe total difference from the budget for the year.

You can make a difference!

It appears that meeting all of our needs in 2010 willbe a challenge based on the actual receipts so far thisyear. Increasing your traditional giving may bedifficult at this time. However, maybe supportthrough non-traditional sources is something youhaven’t thought about. For example, Packers serversearn $50 per server for each home game. (OSLC isshort of servers almost every game.)Attend a FridayFish Fry. (You won’t find a better meal and service.)Use Scrip. (It costs you nothing.) Please contactMichelle in the church office at 468-4065 for moreinformation on non-traditional sources.

The annual voters’ meeting to approve the 2010budget will be held at 10am on December 6. Pleaseplan to attend. Copies of the proposed budget will beavailable for review by November 22.

Trinity News Just for LaughsSisters, I Sure AdmireYour Faith! Two nuns who worked as nurses were comingback from a trip to an ill member when theyran out of gas. Helplessly, they were standingbeside their car when a truck approached.Seeing the sisters in distress he stopped tohelp. They explained the problem. The truckdriver said he would gladly give them somegas from his tank, but he didn’t have a bucket. One of the nurses dug out a clean bedpan andthe helpful driver drained a couple quarts ofgas into the pan. He waved goodbye and left. The nuns were carefully pouring the preciousfluid into their gas tank when a HighwayPatrol Officer arrived. The trooper stopped, watched for a moment and shook his head inamazement. “Sisters,” he said, “I sure doadmire your faith, this I gotta see!” The carstarted right up while the officer’s eyes nearlypopped out.

A sixteen year old got his driving permit. Heasked his minister father if they could discuss hisuse of the car. The pastor thought for a moment, then said, “I’ll make a deal. You bring yourgrades up, study the Bible at least one day a weekand get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about it.”A month later the boy again asked if they coulddiscuss his use of the car.

“Son,” said the father, “I’m really proud ofyou. You brought your grades up, I’ve seenyou studying the Bible, but you didn’t get yourhair cut.”

The young man replied, “Dad, I’ve been thinkingabout that. Samson had long hair, Moses hadlong hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus hadlong hair!”

To which his father replied, “You are right! Andthey also WALKED every where they went!”

During World War II parachutes wereconstructed by thousands of women working infactories across the United States. The job wastedious, requiring stitching endless lengths ofcolorless fabric, crouched over a sewingmachine eight to ten hours a day. The result oftheir work was a formless, massive heap of clothwith no visible resemblance to a parachute. Tokeep the women motivated, a manager in onefactory met with his workers each morning. They were reminded how many men hadjumped to safety because of their work. Hesuggested they keep a mental picture of a familymember who one day might need a parachuteand he thanked them for their dedication.Don’t let the tedium of the day’s chores wear
