What?
Do a PI project with a university!
1.Connect with the university.
2. Identify a suitable project (research or classroom).
3.Get the licence agreement (ESLA) in place so they can use PI.
4.Advise and support the project.
5.Prepare a presentation about the project.

Use Case: Soft Sensor real-time
Prediction for column composition
Refinery produce blended products such as diesel, gasoline &
fuel oil would like to reduce the time and increase the quality of blends to reduce demurrage potential cost.
No real-time data available
for the column compositions
as it is a hard to measure
variables
PI System was used to build an asset base model which enables the use of PI Integrator for Business Analytics to send historical data to a 3rd party software to provide a predictive model.
Save a potential demurrage of $700,000 / year increasing blend quality and reducing blend time by 60% for some products.
• “We can see a predictive column
compositions on real-time and we
can take early decisions based on
this accurate prediction”
• Able to save 1,080 hours/year
• Increase the blend quality by meeting the product specification with minimum blend steps.
• Earn a good reputation of being on time for the product shipments.
• Operators and planners often relied
on estimates or wait for the lab
results rather than real-time data to
do their job.
This is a potential
use case for any
Refinery.
All numbers are
estimates on this
example.
