Riedinger Urinalysis notes Urinalysis Task: - take a urine sample Procedure A from a patient – ROUTINE URINALYSIS = dipstick - introduce self, gain consent and cooperation - provide toilet facilities, handwashing facilities, clean container to pass urine in - perform hand hygiene, roll up sleeves…. - Put on gloves (non-sterile) and apron - Receive urine sample form patient, if clearly contaminated, ask for new sample Procedure B from the catheter port = dipstick - introduce self, gain consent and cooperation - demonstrate interest and respect and attend fo patient’s physical comfort - ensure privacy - perform hand hygiene, roll up sleeves…. - Clean catheter port with chlorhexidine swab and allow to air dry (the one used previously to fill the balloon with water, i.e. NOT the main one to which the catheter bag is connected) - Using ANTT guidelines collect syringe of urine (needle free system) and place urine into universal container (10mLL syringe pushed into catheter port using aseptic non-touch technique) Remainder of procedure - Check multistix expiry date - Check reagent strip to ensure that they are dry, and not contaminated - Dip reagent strip into urine - Tap stick on specimen pot to remove excess - Start timing - Compare stick reading with legend on container, without touching the container (perpendicular to the bottle) - Disposer of stick and specimen pot in yellow bag - Dispose of urine in the sluice - Clean up and leave area tidy - Perform hand hygiene 1
