Introduction

0 OS/2 stands for Operating System/20 Created by Microsoft and IBM.0 Initial release-OS/2 version 1.0/April 1987.0 Latest release-OS/2 version 4/December 2001.0 Available in Languages like English, French, German,

Spanish, Portuguese, Russian.

Introduction(conti..)0 The name stands for "Operating System/2", because it was

release when IBM's "Personal System/2 (PS/2)" was introduced.

0 It was introduced in the era of second-generation computers.0 It was operated with Intel microprocessors and was 16-bit

operating system, designed to work with 286 processors. 0 OS/2 later became a graphical interface similar to Windows,

but also supported a command line. 0 In fact, many OS/2 and DOS commands are the same.

Development History

0 The development of OS/2 began when IBM and Microsoft signed the "Joint Development Agreement" in August 1985. It took two years for the first product to be delivered.

0 The original release included text mode-only. Later Application Program Interface(API), Graphical User Interface (GUI), Presentation Manager, was introduced with OS/2 1.1.

Microsoft and IBM: Breakup

0 The collaboration between IBM and Microsoft discontinued in 1990, between the releases of Windows 3.0 and OS/2 1.3.

0 During this time, Windows 3.0 became a tremendous success, selling millions of copies in its first year.

0 Much of its success was because Windows 3.0 (along with MS-DOS) was bundled with most new computers. OS/2, on the other hand, was only available as an expensive stand-alone software package.

0 The increasing popularity of Windows prompted Microsoft to shift its development focus from cooperating on OS/2 with IBM to building their own business based on Windows.

7

Reasons for Breakup0 Differences in culture and vision:

0 IBM programmers could not understand how anyone could write code without proper design documents and thorough testing.

0 Microsoft programmers could not understand how anyone could waste so much time on paperwork when they should be writing code instead.

0 Differences in API:0 When Windows2.0 had Windows API already defined. Then IBM requested

that this API be significantly changed for OS/2. Therefore, issues surrounding application compatibility appeared immediately.

0 OS/2 1.x did not gain enough momentum to allow vendors to avoid developing for both OS/2 and Windows in parallel

Versions1.1

Version 1.1 was released in November 1988-Codename Trimaran0 Presentation Manager (PM)0 Support for larger than 32MB

partitions

0 3-4 MB RAM minimum0 It 'looked' identical to that of

The real difference between OS/2 1.0 and 1.1 was the addition of Presentation Manager, a graphical windowing system. Presentation Manager (PM) entirely

changed the look and feel of the OS.

Version 2.0 (GA) Version 2.0 General Availability (GA)0 This release included Windows 3.0 for use in Win OS/2 and release in

1992. At the time of the release the Presentation Managers graphic drivers were still 16 bit, although a later service pack was released which included 32 bit drivers.

0 The GUI had radically changed from 1.3 to 2.0 as it now included the Workplace Shell.

0 The new Presentation Manager replacement, Workplace Shell, included a deal with Commodore for the "look and feel" of Amiga DOS, and as part of the deal, Commodore picked up a license for REXX into its products as first seen by Amiga DOS 2.0.

The released OS/2 GA looked like this: The difference wasn’t big, although the GA desktop was a bit more densely populated.

0 Warp 4 was released in 19960 New features

0 Java0 VoiceType Navigation 0 Dictation

0 “Universal Client” because of its unparalleled network connectivity.0 Faster than WinNT, more stable than Win95, easier to use than both

WinNT and Win95, it is safe proven technology, it runs practically all of your DOS and Windows 3.1 programs

Major Features:

1. Low System Requirements:

IBM designed OS/2 with scalability in mind. OS/2 can run on any 386 or higher system with at least 8Mb of RAM and 200Mb of hard drive space.

2. Ability to run more applications:

One of the biggest advantages that OS/2 has over other OSs is the ability to run applications from each of these different OSs concurrently.

3. Full Preemptive Multitasking:

The users won't have to worry about a "resource hog" tying up the system and they can continue doing their work. Users can also select exactly how much processor time they want to allocate to each program.

4. Memory Virtualization:

Because of OS/2's excellent memory virtualization users can run applications that they normally would not be able to because of memory restrictions. As an example, users can run applications that would normally use up 32Mbs of RAM on a 16Mb system.0 5. Crash Protection:

OS/2 protects each program in its own "virtual machine". This gives the user the ability to run misbehaved applications without having to worry about crashing the system or other programs.

Features: (conti..)

6. High Performance File System:

OS/2's file system is called HPFS. HPFS eliminates all of the problems associated with the FAT or "DOS" file system. HPFS uses disk space more efficiently that Fat, has built in long file names, eliminates the need for defragmentation of the partition and is fully 32 bit.

7. Complete Networking Support:

OS/2 has support for all industry standard networking protocols. OS/2 allows unlimited connections to other systems in a peer network, perfect for the home or small office.

8. Device Driver Support:

It is well known that past OS/2 has had a problem with device driver support for hardware. IBM recognized this problem and has worked extensively with hardware manufacturers to correct. IBM now includes a CD devoted to device drivers.

9. Workplace Shell:

OS/2's interface is called Workplace Shell(WPS),fully object oriented interface. This means work can be done more efficiently, no more need to perform with the mouse just to copy a file. Just drag & drop.
