When the sunlight finally reaches the water, it gildsthe reflection of the buildings and trees with gold. e

water sparkles as it flows under the bridge, thenbounces the light onto its stone underbelly. In a fewminutes, the sun will rise high enough to reach overthe tops of the right bank buildings, and will dress thestreets in a uniform of pale-yellow. But in these lastfew moments, everything is orange and pink andephemeral. It illuminates the island like a hall of

natural mirrors.

A moped roars by, straining second gear. Somewherein the interior of the island, a dog barks, and a womanbarks back. e spell is broken, and MonsieurMoustache is down on the street now, waiting for hisdog to sniff a tangle of grass. e day is bright and fullof possibility. And here I am standing still.
