Task 1 Read the text about breakfast in the U.K.

Breakfast menu

Toast There will be butter or margarine to spread on the toast. Then there could be a savoury spread, like Marmite, or a sweet spread, like jam or marmalade.

Fruit The British grow and eat lots of fruit, especially strawberries and raspberries in summer and apples and pears in the autumn.

Full English breakfast

If you usually have a small breakfast, a ’full English’ breakfast is quite a surprise. It contains sausages, fried eggs, bacon, baked beans, mushrooms, fried tomatoes and black pudding, a sausage made with pork and pig’s blood.

Cereal

This comes in boxes and is made from wheat. You pour it into a bowl and add milk.

Porridge

English people are more likely to have porridge with brown sugar; while in Scotland many people eat it with salt. A bowl of hot porridge is a nice warm start on a cold morning.

Want to get in shape? Get a dog! Research out today

has found that dog owners are among the fittest

people in the UK. It’s no surprise given that most

dogs to walk or play for at least an hour a day. It’s hard

to ignore a barking dog! It’s a great reason to get up

and get active!

Other pet owners also had lower blood pressure and

reported lower levels of stress than the general

population. Perhaps surprisingly, the owners of

snakes and lizards were the most relaxed of everyone

surveyed.

For the first time in many years, the number of people owning pets in the UK is decreasing.

The British seem to love animals as much as ever - so what could be behind this trend?

It’s clear that the recent economic crisis has made most people think twice about their spending.

Looking after a cat or dog can be expensive: with food, toys and veterinary bills to consider.

However, even in previous times of economic hardship, the Brits had continued to buy and

own pets

It seems that very high house prices might be to blame. Young people can’t afford mortgages

and are continuing to live in rented property for longer. If you want to rent a house or flat in

the UK, you usually have to obey certain rules. Normally you mustn’t smoke indoors, and often,

you can’t keep pets.
