Page 2: Original Pitch

Newham has a very young and highly diverse population.

Poverty in Newham is high and life expectancy is lower than the London average.

Newham’s population is one of the most ethnically diverse in London. In 2009, 64.6% of residents were recorded as

being non-white. Of these 20.5% were Pakistani or Bangladeshi, 18.1% were Black, 11.5% were Indian and

14.4% were either of mixed ethnic origin or from another non-white ethnic group.

Newham’s BAME residents are on average younger than white residents.

CRIME

For accuracy we have looked up crime reports to show the

most common offence in Newham.

Page 4: Original Pitch

Due to demographics in Newham characters should be of BAME to show the high levels in the Newham.

They will be under the age of 25 because of the information found in the Local Economic Assessment showing that Newham has a higher average of under 25s living in the borough compared to London as a whole.

Due to the nature of the genre smart attire will have to be worn especially to recognise those who are higher up in the chain of command.

Basic Plot Synopsis:

• The boss/father dies.

• We find that the right hand man (younger adopted son) is left all of the wealth and assets (as written in the will) and the underboss (the son) is left with nothing.

• It causes the division of the company as the oldest brother lets the jealousy get the better of him.

• Tensions rise, emotions take over and there is no longer room for both ‘brothers’ in the family business.

• The biological son plots to take back what is rightfully his.

Mise en scene or visual motifs: The colours used are often very dark. Greys and blacks are the most common. Low level lighting is commonly seen in gangster films this is to show Fear, mistrust, bleakness, despair and paranoia in the genre.

OUTLINE OF IDEAS

• The protagonist is the adopted son who is the right hand to his father. (Boss)

• The antagonist is the biological son who is the underboss to the father.

• The father is not seen during the trailer as he is deceased.

No film magazines were found which reinforce the genre.

CONVENTIONS OF TRAILERS/POSTERS/FILM MAGS

In gangster films women are always seen as objects never involved in business but always pleasure.

Violence is always shown in a gangster trailers, whether it be a small fight or a mass execution.

Conventions of a poster – Usually dark and bleak colours – black, grey.

A weapon is almost always shown and suits are usually worn.

Page 7: Original Pitch

Gangster films will always have guns whether guns are used to kill someone or for protection.

Money - It is used to show wealth and whose control, the one with the money is the one with the power.

Drugs(recreated using flour) – the product the organisation distributes in order to make their money.

Briefcase - for the money a classic prop used in all gangster films.

WHAT RESOURCES WOULD YOU NEED?

A room that resembled a board room for the meeting of the gang.

Actors – 8-10: Forming the hierarchy, their level in the hierarchy will decide their attire and status in the trailer.

Most of the trailer will be filmed inside the borough and we also plan to shoot in more densely populated areas for example, Canary Wharf.

Page 8: Original Pitch

For the trailer we have taken inspiration from existing gangster crime movies such as American Gangster, In Too Deep, Next Day Air, Hoodlum. Several aspects of gangster crime have been extracted from the films and have been incorporated into our trailer in order to bare resemblance of a professional trailer.
