Moving forward...Hello, we are so excited about how things

are shaping up now - a new site, new

design and many extra features inside the

site. Also, Chris had no option but to resign

from the I.T.F. under the guidance of G.M.

Choi in October due to personal reasons

with their administration. However, the

magazine holds NO malice towards Master

Choi’s I.T.F., hence our stance on

reporting their news. We have been

officially accepted by one of the I.T.F.’s to

report news for them and hope in time the

others will come on board. The direction of

our magazine is to provide news, health

news and reports from around the globe.

We are a smaller scale magazine opposed

to others but, with your help, we can make

this magazine one of the best, so jump on

board and help us to help you.

OFFICIAL I.T.F. PRESS RELEASE

Mr. Ung says organization of 2009World Championships deserveshighest appraisal. Upon completion of the XVIITF Taekwon-Do World Championships ITF President, IOCMember Professor Chang Ung summarized the results ofthe ITF World Championship in Saint Petersburg.

This World Championship is held on a very highorganizational and sports level and I, as the ITFPresident, am very glad about it. As for the organization,I can only thank the organizing committee of thetournament headed by the President of the SaintPetersburg Taekown-Do Federation Mikhail Shmelev andall the organizations and authorities that participated inthe organization process for their work.

The tournament was held on a very high level. There wereof course some small problems but you cannot avoidthem even at the Olympics.

On the whole, everything went just fine. From the pointof view of sport, you can note that sportsmen from 80countries came to the tournament to show their mastery, and their level was indeed high. This proves once againthat taekwon-do is moving forward fast all around theworld.A considerable share of gold medals was taken bytaekwon-do practitioners from DPR Koreaconfidently winning in team classification. Aren’tyou, as ITF President, embarrassed by this obviousdomination of the representatives of one country?First of all I would like to say that I am not responsible formedals allocation. This is not my business and I cannotinterfere here. The other matter is that ITF is going tomake any efforts to avoid the monopoly of one country forgold medals. But for this, we need to help the developmentof taekwon-do in different countries and on differentcontinents. As an example we can remember the fact

that there were more than 300 sets of medals at theOlympic Games in Beijing and athletes from 87 countrieswon them. We should probably aim at extension ofcompetitive countries on the highest level.

Simultaneous with the ITF 2009 WorldChampionships WTF held its World Championshipsin Copenhagen. There have long been talks on thenecessity to merge the two taekwon-do federationsbut so far they have not been successful. What arethe perspectives for this issue today?

The main problem, in my point of view, is that ITF ismore ready for compromises in the negotiation processthan WTF.

I think that our partners in these negotiations are eagerto demonstrate their readiness for merger rather thandoing any actual steps in this direction.

That is why it is difficult to say that the negotiations aresuccessful now. Another problem is that ITF headquartersin Vienna and our organization is accordingly under thejurisdiction of Austrian laws, while WTF has itsheadquarters in Seoul and is regulated by the laws ofSouth Korea. So for this reason the legal side of possiblemerger of ITF and WTF may have some difficulties.

Leadership behavior that is perceived tobe unjust and demeaning is bullybehavior. That is what 250 employeesfrom different organizations said in arecent survey conducted by TIGERSSuccess Series.

But why is it that many managementarticles deal with how to talk to bulliesrather than addressing bully behavioras inappropriate for the workplace? The effect on a company is highturnover, unrest, low morale andpotential dishonesty.

What is a Bully? Webster defines abully as a person who hurts, frightens, threatens or tyrannizes those who aresmaller or weaker. Bullying behavior isthat which threatens loudly, browbeatsor bulldozes others. Bullies live to winat all costs and will continue to harmothers unless corrected.

We know their behaviors throughlitigation and high workforceturnover. The bottom line is that bulliesare an expensive liability to a companywhen management ignores complaintsabout them. If you are a manager whoreceives a complaint against aworkplace bully,

Where bullies are normally found is inleadership positions wherecombative-competitive behavior hasbeen rewarded with promotion andother entitlements. These people do geta job done fast and leave low morale intheir wake.

An organization transitioning from anindividualistic culture to a collaborativeculture that ignores managementbullies will not do well in a tight labormarket or competitive economy. Wordabout high turnover, fairness andworkplace volatility turns talentedemployees away.

So what do you doabout a bully in akey position?1. Educate yourmanagement team.Every manager inyour organizationshould be wellinformed about thecompany'spersonnelprocedures. Theseprocedures must befollowed in both for-mal and informal set-tings. Hidingbehind an'Employment at Will' clause will not necessarily indemnify you.2. Be aware.Be on the look out for managers who do not follow establishedpersonnel procedures.3. Establish 360 performance reviews.Managers who are perceived to be helpful, fair, effective, trustworthyand empathetic are generally rated quite high. Bullies are not.4. Follow up.Follow up poor performance ratings and complaints with a formalinquiry. Document a course of action and set measurable goals.5. Hire right.Hire from your values and not solely based on the resume. Hire forattitude and train for aptitude.Bullies who refuse to change but who see the writing on the wall willvoluntarily leave your organization. Others must be removed throughcorrect procedure and thorough documentation.

At 11.15am, all candidates were finished and infull uniform (dobok). Miss Snow, 1st Degree, took the students through an intensive warm up.Anyone from Mr. Snows school will alreadyknow there is no mercy when it comes towarming up - a warm up from his oldestdaughter means you know you will be almostpushed to the same intensity!

The group of nine was split into two groups, one with the two 1st Degrees and two 1st Kupsand one with five 1st Kups. Onto the floor camethe two seniors to demonstrate patterns. Threepatterns were executed then the second groupwould come onto the floor and do the same.None of the students knew what five patternsthey were being tested on (as all patterns areseen over the day), so all patterns had to beexecuted as if they were being graded on it. Theexamining panel stopped the proceedings acouple of times to insist that more power beused in tuls. Senior Examiner Master Harryspoke with the L.T.S.I.’s examiners to clarify ifpower was an important element in the test, which both Chris and Stuart confirmed it was.

Onto set sparring, all elements were covered. This was an eye opener for the Senior I.T.F.Examiner as the L.T.S.I. has a set requirement, meaning at each level of one step our membershave to use various advance techniques.

This is constructed as 4th Kups doadvanced hands attack and defenceonly, 3rd Kups do hands and feetdefence and attack and so on.

Onto self defence, this sectionconsists of ten basic grabs in noorder. The students worked on eachattack for a few minutes until all thevariations had been shown.

Next up was sparring, where allmembers had to execute goodunderstanding of hand and footdefence and body movement, including good evading movements. The panel insisted that the studentsmake each other work and place abit of contact into each spar as, afterall, this was a Degree testing socandidates must spar like potentialBlack Belts. Miss Snow and Mrs.Blewitt (L.T.S.I. Instructor) torelumps out of each other, sparringlike true warriors and setting thepace that the examiners wanted tosee. The execution of true techniquewas demonstrated by both, whoproved there is NO such thing as aweaker sex in Tae Kwon Do, butthey finished as good friends.

On Sunday 11th October, ninemembers of the L.T.S.I. from theSouth East and Midlands schoolstook part in the 3rd I.T.F. / L.T.S.I.Black Belt testing.

The day started at 10am - allcandidates had arrived at theL.T.S.I. Head Office bright andearly. Vice Chairman Stuart Smith,4th Degree and Black Beltexamination panel member, explained to the candidates what thepanel expects of them.

At 10.30, the examination startedwith each of the students doing the45 minute written exam. Instructorsin attendance were Mr. Snow, 5thDegree, Mr. Smith, 4th Degree, Mr.Pearce, 2nd Degree and Mr.Carling, 1st Degree.

At 11am, Master Harry, 8thDegree, arrived unannounced but,as always, it was a pleasure to seesomeone in such a high positionfrom the I.T.F. take the time to seehow things are run insideassociations affiliated to them.Master Harry had a quick coffeeand a brief chat with the otherexaminers.

2009I.T.F.

Page 13: Original-ITF No.4

The next 30 minutes was free spar-ring, then moving onto two rounds of2 verse 1. At this point, one of theolder candidates asked for a break (heis 50+, so the panel allowed the shortbreak) - Master Harry said “Fitnessand age should not be an excuse”, buthe would say that as he is super fit!The exam then moved onto breaking. This one element is the toughest of theL.T.S.I. examination, as they will get alower mark if they cannot break withthe set breaks. Tough I know, but ourSenior Examiner feels it vital that allcandidates must be able to break tocall themselves Black Belts.

The juniors under 13 years of agewere asked to break a thin board - thisis the first time the L.T.S.I. has evermoved away from making them breakthe normal worn break boards used atprevious senior examinations, but thiswas due to B.T.C. rules. They werethen asked to kick the specialcomputerised kick shield using fivebase kicks and having to score acertain poundage per kick.

At the end of the exam, the panelcalled a member across to inform himhe had not met the full requirementfor promotion. As per the constitution

of the L.T.S.I., he was informed that heMUST re-apply in March 2010 butthere will be no extra charge applied aswe do not believe in making you payagain (a good policy if you ask me).

The exam was good, standards wereabove average. The examiners had ameeting after promoting the 8successful members to talk about howeach one thought the test had gone. There were mixed thoughts, but allagreed that those promoted had indeedmade the grade at a reasonable level.

Successful candidates were as follows:

Mrs. Blewitt - 2nd Degree (Merit)

Mr. Hurt - 2nd Degree (Pass)

Miss Doran - 1st Degree (Distinction)

Mr. Ratcliffe - 1st Degree (Pass)

Mr. Pickering - 1st Degree (Pass)

Mr. Stennett - 1st Degree (Pass)

Miss Carling - 1st Degree (Pass)

Mr. Eade - 1st Degree (Pass)

(A distinction is only awarded ifmembers achieve 90% in all elementsshown, a merit is 75% in all elementsshown and a pass is 60% in allelements shown at the exam).

Congratulations to all candidates.

Three Ways To ReducePre-Competition Anxiety

It's common for athletes to feel nervous before acompetition. Aside from the obvious discomfortit produces, such anxiety can reduceperformance by interfering with concentration, increasing muscle tension, reducing fluidity ofmovement and even causing tremors in smallmuscle groups.

Fortunately, there are techniques athletes canuse to control pre-competition anxiety. Here arethree techniques that can be effective.

Paradoxical Intention is a 20-letter term for asimple technique. Instead of trying to fight oravoid the feelings of anxiety, tell your athletes toincrease their symptoms as much as they can.

For example, if their hands are trembling, tellthem to magnify the shaking until it feels liketheir hands will shake right off. Or, if they havebutterflies in their stomach, tell them to imaginethe butterflies getting so big that the flapping oftheir wings begins to lift the athlete up into theair.

What often happens is that the athletes begin tolaugh at themselves as they observe and imaginethese absurd images. Laughter helps relieve thetension, allowing the athletes to stop thinkingabout the pressure and the outcome of theircompetition so they can refocus on their gameplan.

A similar technique, that has been used with anumber of Olympic athletes, is to establish a"nervous time" before a competition. Duringthis part of the pre-competition routine, theathletes attempt to get as nervous as theypossibly can.

Often, athletes will find they can't increasetheir anxiety beyond a certain level, at whichpoint it subsides. Or, by subjecting themselvesto the worst fear they can experience, theyrealize that it can't get any worse during thecompetition. As a result, they gain control oftheir anxiety.

Before downhill ski races, former World Cupchampion, Steve Podborski would sometimestake a step back in his mind and take anobjective look in his sport. As a result, he'd seethat ski racing was really a group of "grownmen flopping down the hill at 80 miles an houron plastic and wood sticks."

Realizing how ridiculous thisreally was helped him to takewinning less seriously, which de-creased his anxiety.

These techniques don't workwith everyone. Instructing

athletes with no sense of humorto increase their nervous

symptoms might actually

increase their anxiety levels

instead of prompting them to seetheir fears as being ridiculous. As a result, it's not a good idea touse this technique on your

athletes, for the first time, beforean important competition. It'sbest to experiment with it duringa less important situation.

I.T.F. IN TALKS TO UNIFY

The International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) underthe leadership of International Olympic CommitteeMember Prof. Chang Ung met with representatives ofthe ITF under the leadership of Grandmaster TranTrieu Quan to discuss the reunification of the twogroups. The meeting took place in Vienna, Austria onSeptember 12, 2009. Those representing Prof. ChangUng were Master Anto Nobilo, President of theEuropean Taekwon-Do Federation, Mr. Ri Yong Son,Executive Director General and Mr. Kim Chol Gyu,Treasurer. The representatives of Grandmaster Tranwere Master Willem Jacob Bos, Secretary General andMaster Juan Ferrando, Vice President. The discussionswere very productive and afterwards the participantswere invited to dinner by Prof. Chang Ung.

Master Nobilo, who also is a member of the MergerCommittee for talks with the World TaekwondoFederation made a complete report to the ExecutiveBoard on October 12, 2009 at the WorldChampionships in St. Petersburg, Russia. The reportwas well received by the Board. The following night, theinformation was presented to the Congress which wasattended by 82 countries. Master Nobilo expressed hisgreat optimism for the scheduled future talks. Headvised the entire Congress that Masters Bos andFerrando would report to their respective Board andCongress in Argentina at their next scheduled Congressmeeting on November 27, 2009 during their upcomingWorld Championships. Pending approval to moveforward by that Body, a subsequent meeting has beententatively set for the time frame of early December of2009. This news was warmly embraced by the

membership of Prof. Chang Ung.

When Master Nobilo addressed the Congress he spoke of the long timefriendships that many have developed over the years. He said these relationshipshad in many cases become like family. Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha, the firstperson promoted to IX Dan by the Founder Gen. Choi Hong Hi and currentSenior Vice President often states the ITF also means InternationalTaekwon-Do Family. Master Nobilo closed by saying we must bring our familytogether again.

The ITF suffered some fragmentation surrounding the passing of the FounderGen. Choi in 2002. Since that time this unfortunate division has resulted ineach group hosting separate World Championships. With the preliminary plansoutlined during the initial meeting, the World Championships will again becomeone event for all. Many of the newer students and those coming of age nowdeserve this and more. The ITF remains committed to this laudable goal.

While it is understood that complex negotiations take time and can be difficult, these preliminary plans address the need for open and honest dialogue over aperiod of time, along with a transition period to help the process develop. Likeall difficult tasks that Taekwon-Do students often face, adhering to the tenets ofTaekwon-Do will empower those tasked with this all important assignment tosucceed.

We call upon all, those directly involved and every student that watches fromacross the globe as these discussions continue and evolve, to talk with honestyand integrity. To exercise self control and perseverance, no matter howdifficult or challenging the talks become; and to demonstrate indomitable spiritby showing the courage to work towards a compromise that will bring us alltogether for the benefit of all. This is how we can best support, preserve andshare the legacy of our beloved Founder. We eagerly look forward to anotherpositive response to this preliminary plan on November 27 2009, so thesediscussions can move to the next step.

NOTE: The ITF was the first world governing body for Taekwon-Do. It wasformed on March 22, 1966 in Seoul Korea. It relocated to Toronto Canada in1972 to escape the political interference of a military dictatorship and to allow amore expansive growth as North America lies between Asia and Europe. In1985 the headquarters was moved to Vienna Austria, which is located betweenthe Eastern and Western Europe. It is also a politically neutral country allowingaccess to nations regardless of politically ideology, including those ofcommunist or socialist countries. This helped the founder of Taekwon-Do, Gen.Choi Hong Hi realize his dream of sharing Taekwon-Do to all the people of theworld.

The Board of Directors of the ITF is aware of the rumors circulating about a“reunification” plan that would merge the group of Mr. Chang Ung with theITF and that an unsigned, unattributed announcement was sent to the TKDTimes and the Totally TKD magazines who have posted it on their Websites.

The purpose of this document is to set the record straight:

Following an approach by representatives of the group of Mr. Chang Ung, theITF Board of Directors did agree that Master Juan Ferrando, Vice-Presidentand Chair of the Welcome Committee, and Master Willem Jacob Bos,Secretary-General, could participate in a preliminary meeting in order todiscover their intentions.Last week, Grand Master Trân Triêu Quân, President of the ITF, did authorizeour lawyer in Vienna to agree that the court proceedings against the group ofMr. Chang Ung would be suspended temporarily (for a period of three months). The ITF Board of Directors has not entered into any “reunification” agreementwith the group of Mr. Chang Ung. In fact, any such agreement would requireapproval by the ITF Congress, because it would have serious consequences forthe ITF and its members and would necessitate an amendment to the ITF Con-stitution.

We've all heard of it, we might even have childrenthat have been diagnosed with it but how muchdo we truly know about ADD?

ADD and ADHD have been around since the1960's or more accurately since 1968. At thispoint in time psychologist believed it was a formof brain damage or a sever learning disorder asthe first few names implied - Minimal BrainDysfunction, HyperactivityDisorder and MinimalBrain Damage. By theearly eighties thedisorder assumed thename Attention DeficitDisorder and started tobecome one of the mostcommonly diagnosedchildhood illnesses of thetime.

As these children werediagnosed they were put onmedications and placed inbehavioural therapies tocombat the disorder. Morechildren were on vitamins. Totop it all off, most of thesemedications had ill affects thatwere never released by themanufactures. People were seeing children whoused to be happy become, literary, zombies. Thereasons for this was in the drugs and in a drugmanufactures secret. Ritalin was a drug designedfor adults, which means that a proper dose for achild was never created. In other words, everytime a child takes Ritalin they are receiving anadult dose of the drug.

After the initial medication rush of the eightiesand nineties, the psychological communityrealized they had made a mistake. Because of thismistake they decided to make a revision to theDSM or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual ofMental Disorders.

The DSM is the psychological handbook ofdiagnosis. Every certified psychologist knows thatto diagnose a disorder the person being diagnosedhas to meet the criteria that are featured in theDSM. So in the year 2000 the psychologicalcommunity released a new revision to the DSMcontaining new diagnostic procedures for ADD.

One of the most extraordinaryrevisions and most unknown wasthe alimentation of the AttentionDeficit Disorder. Instead ADHDor Attention Deficit HyperactivityDisorder is now the only disorderof its kind recognized in theDSM.

The average person has noidea that ADD no longer exist.

The reason for this is simple. The state of Texas and manyother states do not regulatethe word Therapist, thismeans anyone who callsthemselves a Therapistdoes not to be a certifiedpsychologist, they, literari-

ly, can just pretend. Because of this, the uninformed citizen can unknowingly bediagnosed or have their children diagnosed by anuntrained individual.

Since these Therapists are not regulated and arenot required to obtain proper credentials, they canscam their clients by diagnosing them withdisorders such as ADD that no longer exist.

These diagnoses can lead to improper medicationuse and more importantly improper, if not false, diagnosis. Even if the Therapist acknowledges thefact that ADD does not exist they can still overdiagnose children by not following the criteria fordiagnosis of ADHD.

By: James Holan

Page 19: Original-ITF No.4

Contrary to popular belief, according to the DSMADHD cannot be diagnosed until the age ofapproximately seven years. Any diagnosis beforethen should be taken with a grain of salt. On topof that a child has to present true symptoms of thedisorder for over six months in many differentareas such as school, at home, with parents, withgrandparents, and any other place/person thechild happens to be. Truth be told, it is very hardto actually be diagnosed with ADHD today.

Still what if your child is diagnosed? Do theyneed Ritalin or another dangerous drug? In short,no. There are many different means of controllingADHD, the first and probably more importantbeing discipline. Most children in today's societyare not taught discipline, respect, orself-discipline. Remember when you were a kidand you wanted to scream in the restaurant, I betyour mother did not allow you for even a second. You would have been taken outside, perhapsspanked or given a time out.

A child that has ADHD has to learn to control theimpulses they have, this is called behavioraltherapy in the psychology world or self-discipline.Teaching children this self-control can help themto identify when they are doing somethingimpulsively, if they can learn to identify it they canlearn to control it. You have to keep in mind, onthe other hand, that self-control and selfdiscipline come with age and maturity. A threeyear old should not be expected to have the samecontrol as a nine year old. If you expect yourthree year old to behave perfectly all the time youwill set them up for failure. As parents, you haveto understand child development and what youshould expect from your three year old verses anine year old. Still never underestimate a child, never think they are to young to learn to screamin the restaurant, a child is never to young tolearn self-discipline and a child with ADHD willbenefit highly from learning it.

To help teach self-discipline to your child thinkabout enrolling them in a sport that promotes itsuch as soccer, baseball, any form of martial art,or other outdoor activity. These kinds of activitieshelp teach focus, teamwork, self-control, and willbuild healthy supportive relationships.

Another important means of controlling ADHD isexercise. Parents tend to believe that their childrenget enough exercise in PE at school or at recess. Thus, when their child gets home they allowhim/her to sit in front of the TV or play videogames. On average children receive very limitedexercise in their PE classes at school. For a child tobe healthy they need to get between twenty to sixtyminutes of exercise a day. To wear a child out theyshould get double that amount of exercise everyday. If a child does get to do PE every day of the week(Monday through Friday) then they are probablyreceiving about forty-five minutes of boringexercises that consist of running and doing push-ups.So what can you do about this? The best means isto turn off the TV, shut off the game, sacrifice alittle bit of your time and do an activity with yourchild or take them to one. Yes, this might cost alittle money and yes it will take up your time butthe benefit for your child, especially one withADHD, will be outstanding. An hour in the park,on the tennis courts, at your local YMCA orrecreation center, could be just the thing your childneeds to get the right amount of exercise. At thesame time you can teach your child self-disciplineby enrolling them in a sport that teaches it, whileexercising. Karate is probably one of the best sportsto accomplish this in. Not only does it teach selfcontrol but it also gives your child a good workoutthat is fun at the same time. Other great sports arebasketball, baseball, T-ball for young kids, soccer, and football.

Page 20: Original-ITF No.4

There are even skateboarding classes that promotefun exercise and, if your area permits, snowboardingor skiing. You can even look into golfing, bowling, orswimming. The truth if there are lots of things youcan enrol your child in and there are several sportsthat will do child and parent classes so you and yourchild can stay fit together.

Another important thing to control ADHD is properdiet. A lot of parents in the United States today donot monitor their children's sugar intake like theyshould and few actually have enough time to donateto cooking home cooked and healthy meals.Unfortunately, this might be the most importantthing any parent can do for their child whetherhe/she has ADHD or not. Studies show that a highsugar diet can lead to over energized or hyperchildren. When a child has ADHD this can beamplified. Therefore, carefully monitoring a child'ssugar intake can help control and possibly preventADHD symptoms from showing in a child. At thesame time a healthy diet is vital. Children who do notget enough vegetables, fruits (a natural but goodsugar), protein, or fiber can have a bad reaction intheir digestive system. This imbalanced diet cancause many children to act out because of a lack ofnutrients in the body or can even cause headaches, stomach aces, and other ill health symptoms. If achild feels bad he/she is liable to act bad just as manyadults do. Therefore, a simple change in diet canhelp control, prevent, and keep healthy a child withor without ADHD.So, remember ADD is a thing of the past and ADHDis something that can be easily controlled withoutusing risky drugs. It all comes down to diet, exercise, and learning discipline of the self and of the parent.Funnily enough, these are all things we have beentold for years. If we could just get back to the oldways, then perhaps, no one will have to worry aboutit anymore.

Page 21: Original-ITF No.4

I was on ‘Original-ITF’s website recently (if you don’t knowthe address, it’s www.original-itf.co.uk - check out theirweekly news) when up popped a news article on therecent Unification meeting held between I.T.F. Vienna andI.T.F. Korea. Being an avid I.T.F. person which resides inone of the above, I chose to click on the link which tookme to ‘Tae Kwon Do Times’, another great magazine.

I read and digested the article before I decided to write inand put my thoughts forward about this move. I think thisis one of the best movements that could happen to ourI.T.F. - unfortunately, I don’t see this being of interest toMaster Choi’s I.T.F. as they are moving in anotherDirection. Good good luck to them, as they seemcommitted to the CSIM merger but, that aside, if the twoI.T.F.’s can unite Master Choi’s I.T.F. will still exist but willbe the smaller of the two - perhaps in time they too willchoose to unite back into one body.

According to some, this is a move that had to happen.Rumours are circulating amongst the junior gradeInstructors from both sides I have met that this is for futureWorld and Europeans Championships (now confirmed onpage 16). According to some, Master Trans group hasdropped the court case against I.T.F. Korea - this is a verygood sign in my opinion, as we may now see light at theend of the tunnel. Whoever made the first move needs tobe congratulated on trying to get the I.T.F.’s back as onebody.

One final note to the seniors out there - the first step wastaken by our leaders (a positive move), so now let’s see ifwe, as coaches and students of the art, can build bridgesbetween local area clubs. I think this is an amazing stepforward - finally, the seniors are listening.

I was so pleased to hear recently that your editor of thismagazine (Chris) and his group the U.K.-L.T.S.I. madethe final decision to leave the I.T.F. group they were partof in October. I have been saying since August that thesituation he was in was wrong, why did he just not leavethem? The action against him was, in my opinion sorry tosay, unconstitutional and wrong - however, I also thinkthat the whole situation was unhealthy, not just for the twoparties but also for the I.T.F. in question in general.I visited both their sites shortly after and found a postingfor their members only which, again, made me think “Let itgo”. I visited the U.K.-L.T.S.I.’s site on the same day andsaw that the group had made a decision and dropped allon-line stuff regarding the whole matter. It’s not a goodpractice that groups throw mud at each other, warrantedor not.I have been watching your NEW website and what afantastic site it is. The designers have added forums, video submissions, chat rooms and loads of other stuff. The access is FREE to all I.T.F. practitioners and takesaround 10 seconds to sign up.The site is a social network / website for I.T.F. people onlywho can share their memories and news - if it’s good, itwill also go to the magazine for publication, which is whatwe all needed. Have a look at the videos and galleries -they have some fabulous content in them already. The site is not in favour of any I.T.F. group what so ever, but being a practitioner of 30 years this really does deliverthe goods that I wanted. It’s easy to navigate around, youcan use the shout box on the front page to get videosadded to the video of the week, use the micro bloggersystem to leave comments and do so much more.Look at me, I am buzzing! Their last announcement online said they are getting just under 700 visits a day, sothat alone should tell you how good it is (shame the signups are few). Go check it out, it’s worth the little time ittakes to set up.

In light of the recent announcement of the merger with ITF-C andthe CISM (www.cism-milsport.org) and now I.T.F. V and I.T.F.N.K. making the move to reform as one, what are the real benefitsof these mergers? Well, we all know in the case of G.M. Choi’sI.T.F. that this means I.T.F. C will function from South Koreawhere he will return to live in 2010. The merger is South Koreasarmed forces aligning itself with G.M. Choi (or is it the other wayround?). Well, many are claiming this is a good move. G.M. Choiwill return back to South Korea, which in its own right is a majormove.

The I.T.F.’s under both Mr. Ung and G.M. Tran are allegedly alsoin talks regarding joining forces - for many, this is also a greatmove. Master Tran’s I.T.F. has moved forward leaps and boundsand Mr. Ung’s has established itself also as a market winner, however the W.T.F. lead seems to be plagued with problemsaccording to recent comments made by Mr. Ung, but that’s anotherissue that is ongoing.

Many feel that if these two merge, there will be many changes onboth sides but, to be honest, these will be for the best. It has beensaid that should the re-unification go ahead, it will be for majorinternational events like the Worlds or Europeans (not before time,we say).

So what will happen to the I.T.F.? Many are now saying we will beleft with the two main players becoming the real I.T.F. and MasterChoi’s I.T.F. becoming more of a private organisation which, overtime, may be forced to change its name to the I.T.F./CISM.

Both mergers have very positive results membership wise for bothI.T.F. Groups. There is also a growing belief amongst the I.T.F.membership of both parties that, one day, all of the I.T.F.’s willcome back together as one again, but this may be wishful thinking.

At the very least, what we may see in the future is all the I.T.F.’sagreeing to work together for international events, but we are still leftwith the problem of our seniors - will they forgive and forget, as manystill hold onto the K.C.I.A. involvement in I.T.F. in days gone by,which may place unwarranted obstacles even nowadays.

We still hear the usual propaganda from some of the seniors makingclaims that I.T.F. N.K. send money back to North Korea, which is justanother ploy to stop us uniting as one again. Where are all the originalGrand Masters? In the one I.T.F. that has remained true to the allegedwishes of our founder, that’s where.

The membership counts here, not the seniors, as those treading thegrounds many of us have done for years now are either in the middleof our careers or at the end - what we do today will affect those newstudents coming in now and those new Instructors making the steps upthe ladder to a bright future.

War is a bad thing in any shape or form. Bitterness is like a cancer -once it sets, it will eat away at the goodness and leave nothing but illfeeling. We can all make a difference by embracing new friendshipswith all the I.T.F. families. In essence, both the mergers have verypositive outlooks for both I.T.F.’S, but the real work starts now. A wiseman once said ‘The best achievements come from the smallest stepsmade’.

His legacy continues into the future.

If you experience a burning sensation along thespine, its quite possible you are suffering fromsciatica. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in thebody, which runs from the spinal cord, through thebuttocks and down the back of each leg.

Usually, sciatica is experienced by people with aprolapsed or slipped disc. A slipped disc is actuallynot a disc that has slipped, but has herniatedallowing the softer internal material to comethrough to aggravate the roots of the sciatic nervealong the spinal cord. In some cases sciatica can beexperienced by women during pregnancy orchild-birth, and also through incorrect lifting ofheavy objects, or through stress.

Sciatic symptoms can vary from mild to verypainful, with a common description being that ofexperiencing shooting pains running down thespine, buttocks and legs. Some people alsoexperience pins and needles, or numbness in theirfeet and legs, along with a general feeling ofweakness.

In some cases, sciatica can be a temporarycondition that eases with time, or in the case ofpregnancy related sciatica, can disappear once thewoman has given birth, and her body has returnedto normal.

Some relief can be gained by laying on your back on the floor for 20 minutes, with your knees bent and yourfeet flat on the floor, with your head propped up by a couple of pillows or a telephone directory.

Aromatherapy massage using lavender and chamomile essential oils can also help relieve the discomfort.

As with other back problems, a warm bath with lavender oil can be most beneficial to the sufferer, as can someold fashioned remedies such as rubbing half a lemon over the affected area, or drinking celery tea, orelderberry wine.

Keeping your bones and nerves healthy is very important if you want to prevent further bouts of sciatica. Fishbones are a great source of natural calcium. Try to choose fresh or tinned fish where you can eat up the bonestoo.

Magnesium may be beneficial in preventing the progression of bone loss. Try taking a supplement, addingbrewers yeast, or eating foods rich in magnesium such as nuts and soyabeans.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, so you will be getting extra by eating oily fish such as mackerel, sardines and salmon, which you are eating to get the calcium from the bones as mentioned above. Vitamin Dis not called the sunshine vitamin for nothing, and by far the best way of getting a dose is by taking a walk inthe sunshine. Vitamin D is produced in the skin as a natural reaction to sunlight, and the body gets most of itsVitamin D in this way.

Increasing your intake of boron is beneficial. Boron is a trace mineral, which can be found in plants. Recentresearch has indicated that post-menopausal women who increase their intake of boron can prevent calciumloss in bones, so tucking into extra serving of organically grow fruit and root vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots, beetroot, turnips and parsnips can help keep your bones healthy. (Good quality soil is rich in boron,so make sure you buy organic wherever possible).

Sponsor a NewStudent in YourSchool

Taekwon-Do schools have changed substantially over the last two decades.Differences range from class syllabus to training benefits to an expanded student age

base. But what hasnʼt changed is whatʼs at the core of the martial artsexperience: the teacher- student relationship. While you may be

thinking about the relationship with your instructor, I amactually referring to the cycle that you as the student willundergo when you become a martial arts student.

Despite the fact that you may never open your ownschool or even teach professionally, the student always in

some way becomes a teacher. It is this special transitionthat has carried the martial arts from generation togeneration and millennium to millennium. Hereʼs a basic

explanation...

Each new martial artist begins as a novice until he or she hasextracted enough knowledge to be considered an

intermediate skilled student. At the same time, and without thestudentʼs awareness, each has also become a novice teacher.

You are not going to receive recognition for this title and no onemay ever point it out, but you will begin to find yourself in

situations where you are offering your expertise to a beginner student or a group ofstudents. It is inevitable that a beginner student will eventually ask you for help. Not only isthis flattering but it is a wonderful experience to pass along your martial arts knowledge. Itis for this reason that I encourage you to sponsor a new student into the martial arts andyour school. Sponsoring a new student means that you seek out one individual who youfeel would benefit from the martial arts training you have received. It also means that youwill take personal responsibility for that new student in two very important ways. The first isto be available if that student ever needs help with any techniques learned in class. Inessence, you are taking this student under your wing. The second way is that you“oversee” their training. You do this by paying attention to training progress and classattendance. When necessary, you can be a motivational force that can help the studentget back on target towards the goal of black belt.

It is always a rewarding experience to help someone with training. There is a specialfeeling each time that student progresses through each rank knowing that you are partly responsible for the results. Thisfeeling that you will share is what drives us as instructors, and is why we have this school for you. I hope you will considersponsoring a new martial artist because, in the end, we are all students who teach the martial arts.

Chris Snow, Senior Editor of our magazine, isan avid I.T.F. practitioner who holds a 5thDegree issued from Master Choi’s I.T.F. andresides in another I.T.F. Group now. He is alsothe senior coach of the U.K.-L.T.S.I. Those ofus that already know him will know he can bevery hot headed and a man that is not scared tostand up against those in senior positions, butit is a hard pill to swallow when we hear peopleslating him for the fact he and his group haveleft groups since going independent in 2001.Those of us close to him know of his past andunderstand why he is so outspoken, so weasked him to allow us to print this so you cantoo.Chris was born in St. Albans in a family of 5 -he has four sisters Angie, Mandy, Christine andTheresa. His childhood was one that manywould call a rough one, as the family unit wassplit at a young age when his parents weregoing through difficult times.Chris spent most of his early childhood inmonthly boarding schools and foster carehomes, instilling a sense of not being able totrust anyone and only knowing one way toSurvive, which was to stand up and becounted. Aged 9, he was sent to live in a threeweekly boarding school, which was very toughand extremely disciplined according to some ofthe things he has told close friends.Punishments dished out at his wing were severeto say the least, as he would board in a wingrun by an ex army officer - in Chris’ words, hewas an animal, as he would mentally andphysically bully kids in his care (this school waslater closed down due to child abuse charges).

Aged 11, Chris recalls leaving the school fromhell, which was a good day - unbeknown tohim, his second school would be no walk in thepark. He quickly learnt this within his firstweek where he would have a tough fight with a15 year pupil, leaving him bruised and nearlyexpelled after throwing the lad down a flight ofstairs! It was then Chris was told by a friend hemust take up some kind of martial art up as hewas carrying a lot of anger around due to theturbulent family life and the school was goingto prove the weak had no place. The schoolwas very disciplined, but fights were normal -almost a daily occurrence. Under the surfacethough, there were things going on in theschool which meant the kids were harder thanmost, as they dealt with problems with theirhands and even the teachers were not offbounds.

A year later, Chris would take up Tae Kwon Do but he was not serious about it.In 1986, he was a very tall, skinny kid so was often a target. He still recallsbeing a handful then and fighting whoever whenever - he says he was beaten upa few times from 11 to 15, but this did not stop him.

Unbeknown to him, things were soon to spiral out of control when, at 14, hisdad would be diagnosed with cancer. He turned to Tae Kwon Do much moreseriously, training harder, punishing himself (the more pain, the better). Aged16, his dad would be given months to live which sent him over the edge, resulting in him being removed from school (which was classified as a schoolfor troubled children) after a violent clash with another student. In 1989, his dad passed away from the cancer, leaving him to be the only manof the family. The next 2 years would lead to violent street confrontations andgetting involved in older gangs and drugs - Chris calls this his life learningperiod, as it was possibly his worst time.

I have known him 15 years now and, looking at the bigger picture, not manyget close to him as he has this mechanism where if you do get close to him, hewill push you away. He has trust issues due to being pushed from pillar to postas a kid. He has also witnessed things many would not believe which are privatebut disturbing to hear - forget counselling, as he would not take it.

Many that train under him will clarify he is a real task master in the schools, buthe wears his heart on his sleeve. There is no hidden agenda. His approach islead as you want others to follow, so seeing him on the floor training hard is acommon practice at his schools as he is a working coach.

Chris is a leader that tells the troop what is going on and hides nothing. Helikes routine and discipline. His coaches always get the right to vote if thingsare not working out and we have been forced over the years to leave groups, asthe majority has voted that situations are not what they want, yet he seems to bethe person a few people like to mouth off about. In a democratically run grouplike the U.K.-L.T.S.I., it is the coaches that make decisions, not him.

Why is he so outspoken? Look at the history - he came up in a past of hardknocks, he will commit to seniors and be loyal but, if they cross him just once, that is the only chance they get as he will argue back.

He will have loyal followers and he has those against him, but few do notunderstand or see what those close to him see. As a coach, he has dedicated hislife to Tae Kwon Do as, when his father passed away, the art became the onething he could actually come alive in and relate too. There are seniors that havetried to suck him in over the years and take control of what he has been doing, only to have the breaks slammed on and be told to get lost so, yes, we back himas we know what we see is what we get.
