Sommerbjerg, a cooperative organic farm of Them Dairy, is situated in the beautiful area of Mid-Jutland, Denmark. Mads Helms is descendant of the original founders. His great grandfather was the first to farm the moorland surrounding Denmark’s biggest forests.

As the 4th generation, Mads keeps the heritage strong. At first glance, Mads is the prototype of a 53 years old Danish farmer with solid build, strong hands and straight forward manners. He is Organic by heart and strong belief, and vice chairs the organization Organic Denmark.

He thinks of his cows most of his waking hours and has clear Ideals. And he does not compromise, when it comes to animal welfare and sustainability.

During the summer (April - October) Mads each day sends all his milking cows on a hike of up to 5 kilometers, before they reach the day’s grazing filed. Due to the energy consumption this hike costs up to 2 liters of the daily milk yield. “In return we have healthy animals that calve easily, have strong legs and hooves and are rarely ill”, explains Mads. Grazing is a must, and comfortable barns are also very important.

Mads prepares composting barns for cows, where the barn floor consists of 80cm wood chippings or other organic materials.

“This ensures the cattle a high level of comfort when lying down and resting, and means that we do not need stalls. I think this matches our ideals as regards animal welfare,” the thriving organic farmer explains.

Organic farming helps cows and Mads to provide unique milk quality. Our milk naturally contains high content of protein (20% higher than conventional milk), essential minerals and vitamins to keep you well hydrated and healthy. Zero-tolerance of harmful or artificial chemicals In Sommerbjerg, organic cows are grazed on pastures that are grown through organic means, and the milk is not contam-inated with harmful chemicals such as the residues of pesti-cides, fertilizers, and hormones. Furthermore, this nutrient-rich organic milk does not contain traces of antibiotics, GM feed, urea, or fertility hormones.

Besides, we are certified according to The International Food Standard IFS, and has in addition HACCP system and an environment system similar to ISO 14001.

Sommerbjerg organic milk is approved by The Ministry of Food Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark.

When Mads the owner of Sommerbjerg organic farm is asked “How do you see Danish, organic milk production in an inter-national context?”

He replies:“I believe we have a very strong position. We have strict regu-lations and a tradition for registering and documenting almost everything, i.e. breeding, use of medication, milk quality and our traceability systems are second to none. It is therefore no coin-cidence that we have had almost no cases of cheating or other scandals in the Danish milk production.”
