Dear Public Radio 90 Members,As we head into the homestretch of our fundraising year, which

ends June 30, I want to thank you for your tremendous commit-ment and dedication to sustaining a local public radio station here in our upper Great Lakes region.

Listeners like you provide 55¢ of every dollar spent to operate WNMU and pay for the programs you value. So you can see how much your financial support matters.

If you’ve been thinking about making a major gift to the sta-tion, now is a good time to do it.

If you are establishing your will or trust, please consider in-cluding Public Radio 90 on your list of beneficiaries.

Or consider a Sustaining Membership by authorizing automatic monthly payments for an indefinite time through your checking, savings, or credit card account.

You’ve been doing a great job of proving that listeners can and will make a difference, and I’m proud to announce that when our April Preview went to press we needed just over $120,000 to reach our fundraising goal for the year and maintain station operations through 2019.

As a loyal member of Public Radio 90, you know that one of Upper Michigan’s treasures is as close as your radio or internet stream—the rich variety of programs you hear on WNMU-FM.

Thank you for doing your part to keep this valuable resource here for us all to enjoy!

Warm Regards,

Evelyn Massaro, Station Manager

Sustaining Members are the Backbone of Public Radio 90

Public Radio 90 introduced Sustaining Memberships in October 2003 as a way for listeners to easily support local public radio by authorizing WNMU to automatically with-draw a designated amount each month from a debit or credit card or a bank or credit union account, indefinitely.

Sustaining Membership makes donating easy and convenient for you and provides Public Radio 90 with a stable source of income to support the programs you value. You can sign up for as little as $5 a month, and easily change your donation installment amount with a quick call.

During its 2003 introductory year, 94 listeners enrolled as Sustaining Members com-mitting $14,300.

By 2012, Sustaining Membership had grown to 414 listeners giving $99,774, and as of March 2019, we have 573 Sustaining Members who have committed $140,275 to help pay for our FY2019 programming.

We’re so excited that more than 1 of every 3 listeners who give to Public Radio 90 has committed to a Sustaining Membership...Wow!

If you’d like to convert your membership to the Sustaining Member plan just give Sarah Stanley a call at 800-227-9668 or email [email protected] and she’ll get you set up.

As our Sustaining Membership grows, it helps us reduce our reliance on state and fed-eral funding to operate, and will ensure that we all get to continue to enjoy and cherish all that local public radio has to offer. Thanks!

Protecting the federal investment in public media. In March, President Trump unveiled the second part of his proposed 2020 Federal budget to Congress, which again proposes eliminating federal funding for public media.

There have been calls to eliminate public media funding before. We overcame those challenges by making our voices heard on this important issue.

Protect My Public Media is a grassroots campaign to support the federal invest-ment in America’s public media system.

The federal contribution to public media amounts to $1.35 per American per year. This critical money enables nearly 1,300 local public television and radio stations to provide their communities with a host of essential services in life-long learning, news, public safety, music, culture and many more. Community Service Grants are awarded based on a formula that includes population area served, as well as local contributions received. WNMU, Public Radio 90 re-ceives approximately $150,000 per year as their federal community service grant.

Who we are

Protect My Public Media is a collaboration of local public ra-dio and television stations, national distributors, producers, viewers, listeners and others who support a strong public media in the United States.

The goal of the campaign is to build a network of advocates who will protect federal funding for public media by taking a stand for the local stations and programs they love.

Become an advocate: Sign up to receive email alerts on the latest issues of public media and so you will know when public media funding is threatened.

Take action and write a letter to Congress in support of public media, tell your story of why public media matters to you and share the campaign with family and friends.

Follow public media news and mini campaigns on the Pro-tect My Public Media Blog.

Join the campaign by liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter.

April 2019

Monday-Friday at 9am

Monday, April 1, through Friday, April 19, Catherine Brand reads The Prizewinner of Defiance, Ohio: How My Mother Raised 10 Kids on 25 Words or Less by Terry Ryan.

Terry Ryan’s mother Evelyn was amaz-ing. She raised 10 children, and supported her alcoholic husband, by entering -- and winning one out of four -- popular contests in the 1950s. She wrote jingles, and poems, and a hundred variations on why one com-pany or another was the best ever. Musical theme: A selection of 50s and 60s TV themes.

Monday, April 22, through Friday, May 10, Jim Fleming reads The Eighty-Dollar Champion by Elizabeth Letts.

It’s November 1958 and the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City is about to begin. Into the rarefied atmosphere of wealth and tradition comes the most unlikely of horses - a drab white former plow horse named Snowman and his rider, Harry de Leyer. Musical theme: Stephen Foster: Camptown Races, Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair; Trevor Stephenson, 1850 parlor grand piano, from the album “The Americans.”
