IntroductionAs the world population is getting older and life expectancy increases, all areas of senior care are affected. Facilities must be marketable, yet viable, while contending with the healthcare constraints on the industry. Orcutt | Winslow has been designing senior-related architecture for over three decades and understands the value of balancing the day-to-day management of a facility with the place your residents call “home.” The importance of each resident, family, staff and caregiver’s experience is exhibited in the architectural design, residential detailing, and finishes throughout all of our senior living facilities. Each one is designed to meet specific aesthetic, social and residential needs without compromising the necessary elements required for optimal care. Balancing each client’s perspective and their own day-to-day practical requirements, we have been able to merge design techniques and caregiver knowledge in each facet of healthcare delivery to create functional (and marketable) solutions.

One the Southwest United State’s largest full-service architectural firms, Orcutt | Winslow has designed a portfolio of work that has resulted in over $4 billion in construction. Centered in six arenas: Healthcare, Education, Higher Education, Hospitality, Senior Living, and Interior Design, clients range from national healthcare providers to local universities, school districts and governmental agencies.

Named the American Institute of Architect’s Arizona Architectural Firm of the Year for 2004/2005 and Regional Architectural Firm of the Year for 2005/2006, the firm holds over 100 design awards. These lasting contributions to the community are the resulting synthesis of Program, Context, People and Technology implemented into the building design and exterior expression.

part of the world community since 1971

Where can you PARTICIPATE?We see architecture as art. We are all creators of the places in which we work, live and play... we inspire the experiences that we ourselves and others have around us.

How do you IMPACT your world?Taking action... building a culture of empowerment... a place where balance meets hard work... and fun meets the bottom line. Sharing our lives...our talents and our ideas within our communities...

Who do you want to BECOME?“When I grow up I want to...” Saving the world comes one open door at a time... new faces... new ideas... new frontiers.... when they all come together, they sustain us.

promenade at the beatitudes campusPHOenIX, aZ

The Beatitudes Campus, a 22-acre redevelopment, rethinks the concept of a continuing care retirement community by offering contemporary amenities and an independent lifestyle to the up and coming active senior and their families. The new campus not only exemplifies its four core values of compassion, accountability, respect and excellence, it also creates a place where the inherent dignity and self-worth of each person, both staff and residents, is realized through its design and services.

The 1960’s campus achieved density and diversity in its conversion into a new “urban” community of patio homes, mid-rise apartments, multiple

dining venues, resident services and recreation areas. Outdoor fireplaces, a sports bar and cozy reading corners are just a few examples that make each and every public area feel like resort living

within a homelike atmosphere. The three-phased redevelopment also focuses on maintaining its

level of service and demographic mix to the existing Phoenix population. An increase in density from 449 units to 779, nearly doubled the available residential units and

ensures the economic and financial vitality of the campus for many years to come.

The new Memory Care Facility at Freedom Plaza features the latest in design innovations for the daily life and care of seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Familiarity became the key word in this large, open “house” --keeping the central living and dining room as a focal point, as we would in our own homes. Resident bedrooms surround the living spaces and offer privacy within a secure environment to help this household truly become “home.”

A residential style “country kitchen” provides participants with the feeling of a home-cooked meal in an inviting and familiar setting....

The Tucson Veteran Home is a new 137,000 SF skilled nursing facility located adjacent to Southern Arizona’s Veteran’s Administration Southern Arizona Health Care System in Tucson, Arizona. Designed to compliment the predominant mission style of its surroundings, the Tucson Veteran Home consists of four 26,000 SF single-story patient buildings, or “neighborhoods”, that each house 30 private rooms. Each

neighborhood consists of three “households” of ten patient rooms. These households consist of living, dining, activity,

country kitchens and other ancillary spaces. In addition, the facility also incorporates a two-story commons

and administration building that houses resident amenities, such as a central kitchen, great rooms, community room, internet café, library,

gift shop, reception and administrative offices.

ryan house PHOenIX, aZ

Based on London’s Helen House, and the first of its kind in the United States, Ryan House provides temporary care for children with life-limiting conditions who come for respite, palliative care and as needed end-of-life care.

Designed and operated as a home, a stone and gabled entry façade with a carefully-scaled Porte Cochere welcomes visitors to a front door that leads to a Great Room with a library, reading corners and a captivating light wall. Inside, a “Camp Ryan” theme extends through each of the eight children’s rooms and three family suites that serve as gateways to adaptive music, art, computer, sensory, hydrotherapy and family fun rooms, along with a fully accessible playground and relaxing outdoor garden. A family-style kitchen and dining are designed to reflect a home setting where parents and caregivers alike can dine together in a pleasant and soothing setting. A reflection room and memorial garden offer a comforting place for families, friends and caregivers to spend time alone or with others to reflect, share or meditate. Additionally, a hydrotherapy room provides relaxation and pain relief, while a bathing room provides the necessary lift, bathing bed and shower to ensure good hygiene, and safety in a private and dignified setting.

hopi assisted living facility POlaCCa, aZ

As the Hopi’s only senior care service provider in Arizona, this one-story, 14-bed assisted living facility offers ten private and two non-conventional semi-private rooms to the community’s 13 villages. The cultural-driven design considers the harsh climate and its compatibility with the natural surroundings via the use of stone and other native materials and strictly arid landscaping.

Community representatives contributed to the building program and development of the resident and family experiences that formed the final design. Both social and personal spaces are distributed throughout the facility, offering alternatives to each resident and his or her guests for both active and quiet venues.

The U-shaped design forms a festive courtyard for larger events and gatherings outdoors, while an open great room allows for the practice of native arts and crafts and other individual or small group activities. Residents also have the choice of family dining in the communal dining room or preparation of personal choices within a residential kitchen adjacent to the activity room. with Encompass

la loma masterplanned communitylITCHfIeld, aZ

An unparalleled development in Arizona, La Loma’s masterplanned community is designed to bring “Life to Years” and offers a vital interactive living experience for seniors ages 55 and over. enjoying life with their grandchildren, everything at La Loma is a short walk or ride away.

This new 350-acre site is about building history, traditions and relationships within a new

urbanist village. The senior living community will expand from its initial continuum-of-care and medical facilities to a full development of

single-family casitas, offices, retail, commercial and cultural facilities, with open space and

outdoor amenities in an upscale well-designed environment at the center of

The courtyard features raised planting gardens, water features and a circular walking trail set within a natural setting evoking images of the local desert vegetation.

Sarah’s Place is a 15,200 SF, 24-bed dementia care building designed with a residential, home-like environment. The facility is subdivided into two 12-bed households, each complete with a living room, dining area, country kitchen and resident activity area. The concept of this design involves the creation of an intimate community feeling that encourages strong interaction and socialization among its residents with a neighborhood setting that promotes indoor-outdoor connectivity through outdoor garden areas and separate common activity areas. In addition, large, but well shaded windows, provide ample daylight while reducing glare and strong contrast between interior and exterior environments. The facility is also equipped with an array of rooftop photovoltaic panels to help offset the electrical consumption of the facility. While the project will not be submitted for LEED certification, the project meets LEED Silver expectations. with Nelson-Tremain

brookdale - clare bridge of tempe, sun city west, tanque verde, and oro valleyFour new Alzheimer’s residential facilities were designed within neighborhood environments to focus on creating a more residential character for these once predominant “institutional” care facilities. The resident experience was transformed into an “at-home” feeling by breaking down the “units” into “neighborhoods” with eight rooms in each. Each neighborhood has its own laundry and bathing facilities. Three neighborhoods are then linked together with adjoining dining and refreshment areas for operational efficiencies.

The lower scale of this large facility allows it to appear more residential and approachable. Small corridors, eight-foot ceilings and cove lighting help the residents feel at home, while offering them a better quality of life in the personal areas. Other amenities and outdoor spaces draw residents into a more social and open environment to promote activity and interaction.

Formerly a three-story psychiatric hospital, Aliso Laguna Village was redesigned and converted to an 84-bed residential care facility for the elderly, catering to residents with Dementia. The community provides a wide spectrum of Dementia and Alzheimer’s care, from the very early stages to the advanced. Residents reside in private “houses” depending on their level of acuity. Small corridors, eight-foot gypsum board ceilings and cove lighting help the residents feel at home while offering them a better quality of life. Included in the facility are a variety of social areas, such as living rooms, dens and libraries. On the ground level, enticing gardens, wandering paths, and courtyards offer access to nature while still providing privacy and security. Large and very secure landscaped terraces were added on the upper floors to provide upper-floor residents with the same level of outdoor experience as ground-level residents.
