The women of the Bible run the gamut from sweet to saucy, from obedient to manipulative, and from caring to downright mean! Some of their stories are very familiar to us and some are quite unexpected but all are worth a deeper look! When There is No Father: Acting the Harlot, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Let’s be honest, no one wants a daughter to choose the life of a harlot, but does the negative moral association we assign to the term “whore” carry the same weight in the Bible as it does today?

Celebrating our 15th year, the mission of the Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program is to share the joy of Judaism, build community, and celebrate our Jewish heritage with a rich adult education program and unique family experiences.

SEX, MAGIC, AND DEATH ARE NOT THE FIRST WORDS THAT COME TO MIND WHEN THINKING ABOUT THE BIBLE, yet each of these three sometimes provocative topics is an essential part of some of the Bible’s most familiar lessons and stories. We are accustomed to looking at the Bible either from the depths of Rabbinic thought or through the lens of modernity but rarely do we look at the Bible, its stories, laws, and customs in the light of its ancient contemporary environment. The Bible is an amalgam of texts, an anthology of sorts that reflects the ancient world where sex, magic, and death were as much a part of the ancient world as at least sex and death are a part of ours. Throughout this series, we will delve into the biblical text and the world in which it was created to see how knowledge of the ancient environment can enhance our understanding of this timeless and elemental text.

DR. SHARON KELLER15th Annual CSP One Month ScholarJanuary 5–January 31

Dr. Sharon Keller set her sights on a PhD in Bible and Egyptology when she was in the 6th grade and steadfastly worked toward that goal earning her doctorate at NYU in the Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies in the area of Bible and the Ancient Near East. Sharon is currently on the Classics faculty at Hofstra University where she teaches courses as diverse as “Women in The Hebrew Bible,” “Magic, Miracle, and Medicine in the Ancient World,” and “Greco-Roman Comedy.” She has been an Assistant Professor of Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages at The Jewish Theological Seminary and at Hebrew Union College; she has also held appointments at NYU, and New York City’s Hunter College, teaching biblical text courses and more general courses in biblical literature and history, as well as courses in art and archaeology of the lands of the Bible and the ancient Mediterranean world. She has written and edited numerous scholarly articles and academic books most of which relate to the interplay between biblical Israel and ancient Egypt. Her most popular book, Jews: A Treasury of Art and Literature was awarded the prestigious National Jewish Book Award. A native New Yorker, Sharon is known for the enthusiasm and humor that she brings to all of her talks that make otherwise esoteric subjects easily accessible.

Blessings and Curses, a Little Magic Never HurtIf magic is real how come we do not see it all the time? Magic is not real to us, but in the world of the Bible the magic inherent in both blessings and curses was integral to most aspects of life.

David and Solomon: Wine, Women, and SongAccording to the biblical narrative, both David and his favored son Solomon are notorious for their interactions with women in their kingdoms. The stories of Bathsheba, Abishag, and the two mothers who both claim the same infant son are but a few of the women whose lives are intertwined with those of the most prominent rulers of Israel, and the characters of these kings are shaped by the women with whom they interact.

Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho and the Walls Came Tumbling Down: the Comic VersionThe conquest of the Land of Israel starts with the city of Jericho where ultimately “the walls come tumbling down.” But, first, spies are sent to reconnoiter the land; their unusual antics with Rahab (referred to as a “harlot”) are essential to the capture of the town and the conquest of the Land.

Moses, Murder, and Attempted MurderMoses is rescued from impending infanticide only to grow up to kill someone himself. The story of the Exodus from Egypt is replete with murder and even a bit of mayhem. We will look at the story of Moses to see how these murders and attempted murders are an integral part of the Exodus narrative.

Omens, Oracles & Execrations: in the Bible and the Surrounding WorldWhat do flying birds, cow livers, shaken arrows, and mold on walls have in common? They are all things that can be examined to discover the future and ascertain what God may be thinking–most of these methods are prohibited by the Bible, but some are embraced.

Polygamy, Surrogacy, Adultery, and Death: It is Who You Leave Behind that Counts! In the ancient world, having children was of paramount importance not only to care for you in old age, but also to attend to your spirit once you have died—after all it is best to have someone to say kaddish.

Sex and the Bible: Maybe Even A Little More Than You Wanted to KnowSex, sexual escapades, and sexual wiles play an important role in many biblical narratives. At times we may think of the biblical text as “modest” and there are other times when “outrageous” might be our adjective of choice, yet throughout it all the biblical text never shies away from letting us know “what is what”.

Sex, Magic and Death in the Bible– Let’s Start at the Very Beginning! The very beginning is of course Genesis, the two accounts of creation, and the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden that quickly follows. These stories are the ones that set our understanding of sex, family, and death as viewed in the Bible. But is what we think the text is saying really what it says? We will explore these three stories without the lens of our presuppositions and view them anew in their own ancient light.

She Set Her Sights on Him: Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife, a Standard Case of Harassment? The Israelites’ journey from Egypt to Sinai begins not with Moses, but with Joseph and his escapades. We will examine the story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife (a case of sexual harassment?) in Genesis and the parallel story from Ancient Egyptian literature.

Take My Wife Please: Marital Relationships in the Biblical TextStories that vex us and, at times, our modern sensibilities can take on a different cast when viewed in their ancient contemporary context– but then again, do they? We will look at some biblical stories from the vantage of the ancient world and see the insights that the contemporary context can provide.

Tamar, Rahab, & Ruth: Politics or Sexual Agenda?Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth are each women with strong desires, each is a foreigner, and each helps to shape the future of the People Israel.

The Body Covered and Uncovered: Nudity in the Bible and the Ancient WorldThe common assumption is that Adam and Eve were ashamed when they discovered themselves to be naked, but if we look carefully at the text in Genesis it says that they “…were not ashamed.” The Bible presents a complicated appreciation of the human body that is at times positive and at times negative, but is never “shameful.”

The Exodus: An Israelite Experience? The Exodus from Egypt looms large in the imagin-ation of most every Jew. But what, if anything,
