oral communication
Dec 28, 2015
course competency“deliver an oral message or presentation appropriate to the audience, within the specified time constraint, and using appropriate visual aids”
other than the fact that it’s a competency, why is effective oral communication important to engineers?
take a few minutes to record your thoughts.
oral presentation typesInformativedescribes the design process used by the team in developing the process/tools used in the Olympic cauldron project
Persuasivetries to convince the audience that their team’s process was best
Instructionalexplains how to operate the tool the team used to move cups
You will each be giving a presentation about a particular manufacturing process to your teammates
What type of presentation do you think this will be?
time
• include enough content to effectively use your time
• don’t go over time• practice to meet time
requirement
slide appearance
what are some ways you can ensure appropriate and professional slide appearance in a presentation?

Competency Category
Competency Name
Description Number of Competency
Points Design Process / Design Thinking
Brainstorming Generate many ideas for a given challenge 1 Design Process Knowledge
Describe an appropriate process for design 1
Design Process Application
Using the language of engineers, describe the design process you used to reach a solution and what, if anything, you 2might do differently next time
1
Visual Communication
Visual Thinking Effectively document ideas through the use of sketching in a bound notebook
1
Prototyping Use resources at hand to effectively express a design idea.
1
Engineering Drawings
Use SolidWorks to create an engineering 2D drawing with appropriate dimensions
1
Engineering Tools Excel graphing Use Excel to create an appropriate graphical representation of data, which must include a title and axis labels
1
Excel math model
Use Excel to implement a mathematical model
1
SolidWorks Model
Use SolidWorks to create a part model to desired / intended specs
1
Teamwork Teaming Identify the effective and ineffective teaming behaviors you utilized during a particular team project

Attempt to LandCaptain Fuchs aircraft was too high and too close to the airport to perform a landing so he was forced to circle the airport until he could reduce his air speed and altitude. In attempt to slow his aircraft he extended the flaps but only the inner wing flaps extended because the hydraulic system to extend the outer flaps had been damaged when the engine separated from the wing. This caused the wing to have a greater pitch angle when landing. The sudden drop in airspeed caused the plane to bank to the right. In an attempt to save the plane, Captain Fuchs increased the engine power, in turn dooming himself and the crew.

• not all animation adds to the presentation• not all graphics add to
the presentation
informative
how can you make your presentations informative? you’ll be presenting on manufacturing processes
report out
what are ways to make your presentation on a manufacturing process informative?
share your team’s two best responses to the prompt
informative
• shows process at work• clearly discusses
strengths/limitations of process
• contains all requested info• asks for questions
report out
how can you demonstrate the quality of the references in your presentation?
share your team’s two best responses to the prompt
quality references
• reference list is presented• references include more than
wikipedia and newspapers• quality of the references
and/or authors is established
report out
what are the characteristics of a confident speaker?
