O er the la t e ear , grid computinginwhich groups o independent, modular hardware andso tware components can be virtualized and provi-sioned on demandhas rapidly moved rom being aleading-edge concept to being a widely adopted prac-tice. Oracle introduced grid computing capabilities in2003, and continues to lead the so tware industry inits commitment to grid computing and virtualization.Today, more than 10,000 organizations have deployedOracle grid computing solutions.

In essence, companies are embracing grid comput-ing because it o ers a clear solution to many o the

undamental challenges acing IT organizations today. For example, by pooling computing resources, gridcomputing helps ensure that IT is agile enough to stayin step with changingand o ten unpredictablebusiness needs. Grid computing also helps ensure highavailability, with the ability to manage workloadsacross the grid, and to add capacity without interrupt-ing operations.

Above all, grid computing lets companies achieve suchbenefts at relatively low cost. It provides a range o savings through the use o standard hardware, greater

e fciencies, better capacity planning, and increasedpredictability. For example, grid workload manage-

ment and resource provisioning help companies meetgrowing workload requirements without adding sta .Also, because computing resources can be appliedincrementally when needed, companies typically seebetter computing and storage capacity utilization, andcan avoid the expense o over-provisioning as a hedgeagainst unpredictable demand increases.

    Oracle RAC gives companies

    a oundation or enterprise

    grid computing built rom

    standardized processing,

    storage, and network compo-

    nentsone that provides

    simplifed, e fcient mainte-

    nance while supporting high

    availability.

Oracle Real Application Clu terOracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) supportsthe transparent deployment o a single database across acluster o servers, providing ault tolerance in the evento hardware ailures or planned outages. With OracleRAC running on clustered servers, companies can havehigh levels o availability and per ormance and easilyscale up operations while controlling computing costs. Oracle RAC gives companies a oundation or enterprisegrid computing built rom standardized processing, storage, and network components. It enables the OracleDatabase to run on a grid plat orm, and lets compa-nies dynamically provision nodes, storage, CPUs, andmemory while the system remains onlineprovidingsimplifed, e fcient maintenance while supporting highavailability.

Oracle RAC can be used with mainstream businessapplications o all kinds, including Oracle E-BusinessSuite, PeopleSo t, Siebel, SAP, and custom applica-tions. It supports OLTP and DSS applications, as well asOracles unique ability to e ectively work with mixedOLTP/DSS environments. And it provides single-imageinstallation and management, giving database adminis-trators a single point o control or managing a clustero multiple servers.

Oracle RAC provides: Lower costs. With Oracle RAC, clusters can be

built rom standardized, commodity-priced process-ing, storage, and network components. In addition,

the so tware helps reduce the cost o downtime. Forexample, Pacifc Gas & Electric saw Oracle RAC as away to cost-e ectively handle growing data volumes

rom its smart-meter program, says Eugene Park, senior director o application services at the com-pany. Weve actually been able to save over $5 mil-lion a year by re-plat orming rom our main rame toOracle RAC. We saw that Oracle RAC would allowus to pretty easily add additional servers and addi-tional storage to grow our processing capabilities.Today, on our customer care billing system, we havemore than 300 terabytes o data spinning to supportour smart-meter in rastructure.

24/7, continuous uptime or database applica-tions. Oracle RAC eliminates the single-point-o -

ailure arrangement that is inherent with a singleserver. I a node in the cluster ails, the OracleDatabase continues running on the remaining nodes.Individual nodes can be shut down or maintenancewhile application users continue to work.

On-demand, exible scalability. IT organizationscan expand capacity by simply adding servers to thecluster as more processing power is neededwhichcan be done without taking users o ine. As soonas the new server is in place, the application takesadvantage o the additional capacity, and serversdo not need to have the same capacity: Companiestoday run a range o Oracle RAC clusters, romthose where each server is a two-CPU commod-ity server to those where there are 32 to 64 CPUs

in each server. One o the large Oracle RAC sys-tems we have is a 16-node system with six storage

nodes behind it.... The uncompressed data withinit is about a ull petabyte worth o data. Its 200terabytes compressed, says David Apgar, businesscontinuity planning and high availability engineerat Yahoo. Oracle RAC supports up to 100 nodesin a cluster.

Indeed, Oracle RAC can deliver high per ormance witha variety o applications and workloads. One o thethings we were concerned about when we frst got intoReal Application Clusters was how well it would sup-port our mixed workload o OLTP and decision sup-port, says Michael Prince, chie technology o fcer atBurlington Coat Factory. The answer is that it has sup-ported them very well. We get great per ormance romRAC, both or our OLTP and or our decision support.

Oracle Acti e Data GuardIT organizations ace a undamental challenge:Improve quality o service while reducing costs andcomplexity. Oracles Active Data Guard helps themachieve consistent high per ormance by o oadingresource-intensive activities rom a production databaseto one or more synchronized standby databases.

Active Data Guard is based on Oracle Data Guard,a eature included in the Oracle Database EnterpriseEdition. Data Guard keeps standby databases synchro-nized with a primary database. I the primary databaseexperiences an outage due to data corruption, system

ailure, human error, or disaster, Data Guard canquickly switch any standby database to the production

role, minimizing downtime and preventing data loss.Oracle Active Data Guard enables a physical standbydatabase to be open or read-only access or report-ing, simple or complex queries, sorting, Web-basedaccess, and so onwhile changes rom the productiondatabase are being applied to it. All queries reading

rom the physical standby database execute in realtime and return current results. This means that anyoperation that requires up-to-date read-only access canbe o oaded to the replica database, enhancing andprotecting the per ormance o the production database. The potential or that type o unctionality is huge, says Logan McLeod, IT strategist at Dell. It nowmeans that I can potentially use my DR environments

or high-volume reporting without impacting my pri-mary databases.

This capability makes it possible or Active DataGuard to be deployed or a wide variety o businessapplications. For example, fnance operations can useActive Data Guard or ad hoc queries and reports. Inthe telecommunications industry, it can be used toprovide technicians with access to service schedulesand to handle customer inquiries about service status. In healthcare, it can enable ast access to up-to-datemedical records. In transportation, it can support pack-age tracking and schedule status inquiries. And Webbusinesses can use it to support catalog browsing, orderstatus, and scale-out initiatives using reader arms.

    Research shows that

    40 percent o application

    outages are caused by opera-

    tor or user mistakes. These

    errors are extremely di fcult

to avoid, and can be particu-

larly di fcult to recover rom

    without advance planning

    and the right technology.

Overall, Oracle Active Data Guard helps companies: Increase per ormance, by moving unpredictable

workloads to an up-to-date replica o the produc-tion database

Simpli y operations, through the eliminationo the management complexity that accompaniestraditional replication solutions, and the abilityto support all data types

Eliminate compromise, because the replica isup-to-date and online at all times, which is not pos-sible with traditional storage mirroring technology

Reduce costs, because the Active Data Guardphysical standby database can also provide disas-ter recovery capabilities and/or serve as a testdatabasewith no additional storage or serversrequired

Oracle la h ackHuman error plays a signifcant role in availabilityand research shows that 40 percent o applicationoutages are caused by operator or user mistakes. Theseerrors are extremely di fcult to avoid, and can beparticularly di fcult to recover rom without advanceplanning and the right technology.

Typical user errors include accidental deletion o valu-able data, deleting the wrong data, and dropping thewrong table. Such errors can result in logical data cor-ruption, or cause downtime o one or more componentso the IT in rastructure. While it is relatively simple torecti y the ailure o an individual component, detec-tion and repair o logical data corruption is typically a

time-consuming operation that causes enormous loss o business productivity.

Oracle Flashback enables IT organizations to view andrewind data back and orth in time, without having tomake any structural changes to the database. It pro-vides a simple, power ul, and completely nondisruptivemechanism or recovering rom human errorsandreduces recovery time rom hours to minutes.

Flashback technology revolutionizes recovery by oper-ating just on the changed data. Thus, the time it takesto recover rom the error is equal to the time it took tomake the mistake. With the technology, organizationscan query historical data, per orm change analysis, and per orm sel -service repair to recover rom logi-cal corruptions while the database is online. Flashbacktechnology can also be utilized or nonrepair purposes, such as historical auditing and undoing test changes.

Oracle Auto atic storage manage entStorage plays a vital role in availability, and it can pre-sent a signifcant challenge to IT organizations tryingto do more with less. To help, Oracle provides OracleAutomatic Storage Management (ASM), an integrated,high-per ormance database fle system and disk man-ager. ASM is based on the principle that as much as pos-sible, the database, rather than administrators, shouldmanage storage. ASM eliminates the need to directlymanage potentially thousands o Oracle database flesand helps protect vital data in the event o a disk ailure.

    Storage had grown to be

the most di fcult and most

    costly component o the

    database architecture, and

    certainly the most di fcult

    to manage. And ASM has

    simplifed it dramatically.

ASM has been a revolution in terms o the waywe manage storage, says Michael Prince, chie tech-nology o fcer at Burlington Coat Factory. Storage hadgrown to be the most di fcult and most costly com-ponent o the database architecture, and certainly themost di fcult to manage. And ASM has simplifed itdramatically.

ASM groups the disks in a storage system into oneor more disk groups. The IT organization then man-ages a small set o disk groups, and ASM automatesthe placement o the database fles within those diskgroups. ASM provides: Striping. ASM spreads data evenly across all

disks in a disk group to optimize per ormance andutilization. This even distribution o database fleseliminates the need or regular monitoring and I/Oper ormance tuning. When reading a fle, ASMreads data rom all six disks in parallel, greatlyincreasing per ormance.

Mirroring. ASM can increase availability by option-ally mirroring any flethat is, keeping redundant,or mirrored, copies o data to help avoid data losscaused by disk ailures. I a disk ails, ASM can con-tinue to access a ected fles by accessing mirroredcopies on the surviving disks in the disk group.ASM supports two-way mirroring, where data getsone mirrored copy, and three-way mirroring, wheredata gets two mirrored copies.

Online storage reconfguration and dynamicrebalancing. ASM lets companies add or removedisks rom a disk storage system while the database

is operating. When a disk is added, ASM automati-cally redistributes the data so that it is evenly spreadacross all disks in the disk group, including the newdisk. This redistributionor rebalancingis donein the background with minimal impact to databaseper ormance. When a disk is to be removed, ASMrebalances by evenly relocating data rom the diskbeing removed to the other disks in the disk group.

maxi u A aila ilit ArchitectureThese various Oracle technologies can be vital, buttechnology alone is not always enough to ensure highavailabilityoperational best practices are also key. Tothat end, Oracles Maximum Availability Architecture(MAA) provides a ully integrated and proven blueprint

or building highly available systems using Oracle Data-base options such as Oracle RAC, Oracle Active DataGuard, Oracle Flashback, and Oracle ASM.

Oracle MAA gives companies superior data protectionand availability by minimizing or eliminating plannedand unplanned downtime at all technology stack lay-ers, including hardware and so tware components. Thearchitecture encompasses specifc design and confgu-ration recommendations that have been extensivelyreviewed and tested to ensure optimum system avail-ability and reliability. In addition to Oracle high-availability options, the architecture also addresses theconfguration and integration o other critical compo-nents o highly available systems, including servers, storage, networking, and the application server.

MAA best practices are described in a series o techni-cal white papers and documentation designed to helpin the design, implementation, and management o anoptimum high-availability architecture. Companies candraw on MAA best practices or areas such as OracleDatabase, Application Server, Applications, Grid Con-trol, and Oracle Partners.

Oracle Ad anced Co pre ionOracle Advanced Compression helps companies man-age growing amounts o data in a cost-e ective manner, while maximizing the utilization o resources. It enablescompression or all types o datastructured data, unstructured data, and backup data, as well as networktra fc and data in the process o being backed up. As aresult, Oracle Advanced Compression helps companiesuse resources more e fciently and lower storage costs.

In terms o per ormance, Oracle Advanced Compression: Has no adverse impact on query per ormance,

because queries read the compressed version o datadirectly without having to decompress it. In act, query per ormance may improve due to improveddisk scan rates and a reduction in the number o I/Os.

Provides enhanced memory e fciency, becausedata in memory is in a compressed ormat. Thisallows more data to be stored in memory andreduces the number o I/Os, which may improveper ormance.

Provides enhanced Data Guard and OracleRAC per ormance due to reductions in network/interconnect tra fc.

Oracle Advanced Compression also helps lowerstorage costsin act, companies may see 3X orhigher reductions. Whats more, it is designed tocascade storage savings throughout the data center, and extend them to test, development, backup, anddisaster recovery environments, urther magni yingthe cost savings. It helps reduce resource require-ments and costs or all components o the IT in ra-structure, including memory, backup media, andnetwork bandwidthwhile improving applicationper ormance and enhancing memory and networke fciency. And it can support todays growingemphasis on green operations, due to its reducedneed or energy and space.

Oracle In-me or Data a e CacheThe Oracle In-Memory Database Cache helps improveapplication transaction response times and throughputby caching critical subsets o data in the applicationtier. By doing so, it essentially brings data closer tothe application and processes queries in an in-memorydatabase, enabling applications to access, capture, orupdate in ormation much more quickly.

The Oracle In-Memory Database Cache helps providethe speed that is so important to many businessestoday, delivering microsecond response times. Databaseoperations execute with maximum e fciency, achievingdramatic gains in per ormance, even compared witha ully cached disk-based relational database manage-ment system. Dynamic caching maintains data resh-ness by automatically loading and aging-out cached

Data ha al a een a critical a et in busi-ness, but today, it is more important than ever or com-panies to ully leverage this asset.

As IT executives know, business decision makers aredemanding more and more in ormation. Compa-nies need to not only analyze and report on what hashappened, but also use data to predict behavior andidenti y trends going orward. And in a world wherethe pace o business is increasing relentlessly, they needup-to-date in ormation that can help them respondand act in near-real time.

To meet those needsand help the company get themost value out o its dataIT organizations need totake advantage o todays sophisticated data warehous-ing technologies. They need to gather and managelarge amounts o data rom a variety o sources. Andthey need to help the business distill that data intoinsights about customers, markets, and per ormanceand use it to compete more e ectively.

Oracle helps companies make the most o their datawith several data warehousing-related options or theOracle Database. These include: Oracle Exadata

    Oracle Data Mining Oracle OLAP

Oracle ExadataOracle Exadata is a amily o high-per ormance storageso tware and hardware products that can improve datawarehouse query per ormance by a actor o 10Xormore.

To deliver that per ormance, Oracle Exadata usesa massively parallel architecture that dramaticallyincreases data bandwidth between the database serverand storage. It also provides smart storage so twarethat makes it possible to o oad data-intensive queryprocessing rom Oracle Database 11 g servers in orderto per orm query processing closer to the data. Inessence, Oracle Exadata overcomes the limitationso conventional storage by moving less data throughlarger pipes.

That approach has proven to be e ective. Currently, our data warehouse is 15 terabytes in size, but weregrowing at 200 to 300 percent per year in our ordervolume, says Walt Litzenberger, director o EnterpriseData Systems at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. We needed something else that allows us to scalehorizontally, with a smaller ootprint. Oracle Exadata Storage combines smart storage so t-ware rom Oracle and industry-standard hardware romHP to create the HP Oracle Exadata Storage Server. This solution is based on the HP ProLiant DL180 G5servera ast, reliable, high-capacity, industry-standard storage building block. With a choice o SAS or SATA drives and a storage capacity o up to12 terabytes per server, it comes with Oracle Exadataso tware preinstalled.

HP Oracle Exadata Storage Servers deliver per ormanceimprovements in data-intensive query processing, have virtually unlimited I/O scalability, are easier tooptimize or data warehousing, and provide mission-critical availability and reliability. They also provide a

Oracle PartitioningWhen data volumes increase, a common concern is thatsystem per ormance will su er because o all the extradata that has to be examined. Partitioning enables tablesand indexes to be split into smaller, more manageablecomponents and is a key requirement or any largedatabase with high per ormance and high availabilityrequirements.

Oracle Partitioning o ers the widest choice o parti-tioning methods, allowing tables, indexes, and index-organized tables to be subdivided into smaller pieces, sothat they can be managed and accessed at a fner level o granularity. Using partitioning within Oracle databasesgives us a lot o advantages, says Sean Wiley, CTO anddirector, EDS Application Services, EDS. For instance,we can segment very large tables within a database, based on month or other characteristics, so that we getthe per ormance characteristics o a much smaller tableand the management characteristics o a much smallertable, within that larger data set.

Oracle Partitioning provides: Faster per ormance lowers query times rom

Changetypically introduces a period o instability in systems, and i it is not managed care ully, it can have a nega-tive impact on per ormance, availability and, ulti-mately, the business. In the end, being able to manageand execute IT change is key to business agility andadaptabilityand the lack o that ability will impairthe companys ability to compete.

Oracle provides several solutions that help IT orga-nizations execute change and manage systems withincreased e ectiveness and reduced risk. These include:

Oracle Real Application Testing Oracle Database Management Packs, a series o solu-

tions that target key IT management tasks. Theseinclude:

Oracle Real Application Te tingThe Oracle Real Application Testing option helpscompanies reduce the risk o adopting new technolo-gies by making it possible to test changes and thenfne-tune them be ore putting them into production.[Real Application Testing] allows us to capture theworkload be ore a change happens, modi y the data-base to whatever you want to do, then replay thechanges you have captured earlier to see the impact o the changes, says Arup Nanda, director o databaseengineering, Starwood Hotels and Resorts. I changesare not adequate or up to your expectations, you canchange it again and replay the transactions once again,to fnd the optimal change.

    With hundreds o

    databases in the environment,

    and more coming all the

time, the ability to test in the

    real-li e scenarios here, and

    understand how the produc-

tion data will per orm, is just

    essential to us providing

    quality service to our

    clients.

Oracle Real Application Testing helps IT organizationscope with change e ectively because it is: Able to replay real workloads, not synthetic or

artifcial loads Comprehensive, providing 100 percent coverage

or the entire change li ecycle Scalable, and able to handle small and large

changes Predictable, because it trans ers the exact resolu-

tion o changes rom testing to production Cost e fcient, reducing testing e ort by up to

    80 percent

Oracle Real Application Testing includes two key ea-tures: Database Replay and SQL Per ormance Analyzer.

Database Replay lets IT pro essionals accurately andrealistically re-run actual production workloads, including online user and batch workloads, in testenvironments. It captures the ull database workload

rom production systems, including all concurrency, dependencies, and timing, essentially re-creating pro-duction workloads on the test system. With it, data-base and systems administrators can test:

Database upgrades, patches, parameter, schemachanges, and so on

Confguration changes, such as conversion rom asingle instance to Oracle Real Application Clusters,Oracle Automatic Storage Management, and so on

Storage, network, and interconnect changes Operating system, hardware migrations, patches,

    upgrades, parameter changes

With Database Replay, IT pro essionals can test theirchanges without the overhead o having to duplicatean entire application in rastructure. And the optioncan be deployed quickly: It does not require DBAs tospend months developing unctional knowledge o theapplication and test scripts. Instead, with a ew point-and-clicks, they can have a ull production workloadavailable at their fngertipswhich helps reduce test-ing cycles rom many months to just weeks or days.

SQL Per ormance Analyzer helps predict and pre-vent SQL execution per ormance problems caused bychanges in the IT environment. It provides a granularview o the e ect that changes will have on SQL execu-tion plans and statistics by running the SQL statementsserially be ore and a ter the changesand provides areport outlining the net beneft. It completely auto-mates and simplifes the manual, time-consumingprocess o assessing the impact o change on extremelylarge SQL workloads, which can involve thousands o SQL statements.

Such capabilities can have an important impact onthe business. As Sean Wiley, CTO and director o EDS Application Services at EDS, points out: Withhundreds o databases in the environment, and morecoming all the time, the ability to test in the real-li escenarios here, and understand how the productiondata will per orm, is just essential to us providingquality service to our clients.

As part o this approach, Oracle Database Management Packsprovide sel -managing capabilities that help eliminatetime-consuming, error-prone administrative tasksallowing database administrators to ocus on strategicbusiness objectives instead o per ormance and avail-ability fre drills.

With Oracle Database Management Packs, IT orga-nizations can maximize per ormance and availabilityby automatically monitoring the entire database envi-ronment and proactively resolving issues be ore theyturn into emergencies. They can reduce ailures due tohuman error through extensive out-o -the-box automa-tion, confguration, and change-management capabili-ties. And they can increase productivity with tools thatlet IT pro essionals manage more databases more e ec-tively. Oracle Database Management Packs and Oracleenable administrators to be 38 percent more productive, compared with DBW 9.1 and SQL Server.

The amily o Oracle Database Management Packsincludes: Oracle Change Management Pack. This provides

an integrated solution that lets DBAs and appli-cation developers manage database changes. TheChange Management Pack allows them to rapidlycompare schema objects be ore and a ter an appli-cation upgrade, identi y out-o -band changes made

to the database, and track changes to databaseinitialization, authorization, and storage settings. With this management pack, IT pro essionalscan accelerate application upgrades by trackingchanges to dependent objects, and rapidly identi yroot causes o application downtime by ensur-ing compliance o production environments withestablished standards.

Oracle Confguration Management Pack. Thisorms the centerpiece o the Oracle Enterprise

Managers ability to manage confgurations andautomate IT processes. It provides customizablesearch and compare eatures; historical changetracking; policy rameworks and complianceassessment; and a critical patch advisoryandit can be used to support both Oracle and third-party IT components. A key part o this manage-ment pack is the Confguration Change Console, which provides real-time change detection;out-o -the-box policies, compliance assessment, and compliance dashboard; and reconciliation withchange-management systems. Overall, this packhelps reduce costs and mitigate risk by automati-cally detecting, validating, and reporting onauthorized and unauthorized confguration changesin real time. It also helps ensure compliance withregulatory and industry standards such as Sarbanes-Oxley and Payment Card Industry (PCI).
