EXCITING LIGHTING

KLAUS STREUBEL Osram Licht AG Munich, Germany In 1992, the first commercial Galliumnitride-based LED was introduced by Nichia. The blue LED closed the last gap in the visible spectrum of LEDs and became the basis for white light emitting diodes. Furthermore, the invention initiated an impressive improvement of LED performance. Today, LEDs are the most efficient light sources and are basically present in all areas of our daily life. They initiated a massive change of the lighting industry and will significantly change the role of light in our modern society. In this presentation, I will discuss some of the opportunities and challenges of semiconductor light sources as well as their application in modern lighting systems.

PHOTONICS AND THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF LIGHT

JOE NIEMELA International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Trieste, Italy In proclaiming an International Year focusing on the topic of light science and its applications (IYL2015), the UN has recognized the importance of raising global awareness about how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges, e.g., in energy, education, agriculture and health. IYL 2015 programs have promoted improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015 – from the first modern studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.

OPTION 1 KTH's unique solar power laboratory

KTH solar laboratory will primarily be used for research on the sun and solar receivers. However, the laboratory will also be used for basic research on the one hand the high-temperature materials in the construction of such rocket engines or fusion reactors, partly to investigate chemical reactions under high light output. Although Sweden is not flooded with sun and light, espe-cially in winter, there is a strong industrial interest in de-veloping both parts of that technology as a whole, both here and in the EU. Today there are a number of re-search projects in collaboration with Swedish Siemens, Cleanergy Energy Agency for the development of solar receivers and solar power plants. For example, exam-ines how solar receivers can be made more effective and how solar energy interacting with other fuels

OPTION 2 KTH AlbaNova Laser Laboratory

This is a joint laboratory between KTH and Stockholm University for nonlinear op-tics, laser physics and sur-face science. The laboratory was funded in 2003 by the Molecular Physics group at the Physics Department of SU and the Laser Physics group from the Applied Physics Department at KTH, as a result of gener-ous funding primarily from the Knut and Alice Wallen-

berg Foundation. It has since then been further devel-oped and now comprises two more groups; the Cell Physics group at KTH, and the Quantum Information and Quantum Optics group at SU, with a total of 60 re-searchers, including 27 Ph.D students.

OPTION 3 KTH Department of Applied Physics

The Department of Applied Physics is one of the largest

departments in the School of Engineering Sciences.

We're situated in AlbaNova University Center and Sci-

ence for LIfe Laboratory. The research at Department of Applied Physics is pri-marily experimental and often multi-disciplinary. Topics range from biological and medical physics over optical physics to applied quantum physics. Prominent areas include the science and technology of bioimaging, bio-molecular spectroscopy, solid-state lasers, non-linear optics, ultrasonics, x-rays, nanostructures, nanophotonics and nanoelectronics. The department consists of approxi-mately 100 people and has seven research groups:

Biomedical & X-Ray Physics

Cell Physics

Experimental Biomolecular Physics

Laser Physics

Nanostructure Physics

Quantum Electronics and Quantum Optics

Quantum Nano Photonics
