Product OverviewNokia Siemens Networks A-2140complements the A-2000 series pro-duct line by adding redundant powersupplies in a NEBS compliant chassisfor the most mission critical applicationsand for providing Ethernet servicesfrom Carrier Central Offices, PoPs andCollocation Cages. It is a one rack-unithigh, compact Carrier Ethernet Edge
Switch that delivers cost-effective10/100 Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet orCES/TDM access interfaces for endcustomers. All the access modules are hot swappable. It has two Gigabit Ethernet SFP/SSF-pluggable ports for connectivity to the Carrier Ethernetcore network. Redundant load-sharingAC and DC power are also hot swapp-able.
The A-2140 can be deployed as high-end CPE working with the Nokia Siemens Networks A-4000 andA-8000 series of Carrier Ethernet CoreSwitches and Nokia Siemens Networks’ASPEN management system. The A-2140 can also be used as an aggre-gation switch working together with theA-100 or A-1180 demarcation deviceto provide a very cost-effective accesssolution. Using these products in con-junction, carriers and service providerscan construct a powerful Metro infra-structure with high performance and efficiency, designed to quickly deliverprofitable communication services.
The A-2140 features 4Gbps non-block-ing switching capacity. It offers up to2,000 protected simultaneous connec-tions supporting point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-multipoint services. Customer traffic can bemapped to connections using multipleand flexible rules from layer 1 (port-based) up to layer 3 (IP Address, Protocol Type and DSCP bits).
Functions
• Hard QoS supporting CIR,EIR and priority with 64Kbpsand 1Mbps granularity
• SONET-like 50ms protectionusing Fast Reroute protocolthat is much faster and morescalable than Spanning Treeor Rapid Spanning Tree protocol
• Strong and comprehensiveOAM functions including fastand pinpoint fault detection,alarm-service correlation,Ethernet loop-backs, as wellas round-trip delay, jitter andpacket loss measurement
• A full set of multicast fea-tures that support scalableand QoS guaranteed triple-play services
• Wire-speed performance
• Very low delay and jitter
• Flexible and intelligent customer traffic mappingmechanisms that allows multi-services on one accessinterface
• Up to 2,000 protected connections per device
• Strong management capability

Applications
Multi-service CPE with HighService Availability for BusinessCustomersThe A-2100 boasts a broad range ofintelligent network services, featuringgranular Quality of Service (QoS) andsub-50ms protection that enable service providers to rapidly provisionsecure Ethernet access with fully MEF-compliant Service Level Agreements(SLAs).• High revenues from multi-services• Fast trouble-shooting with the help
of strong OAM functions• Flexible customer traffic mapping
schemes• Support for single-strand fiber,
reducing fiber cost• Ease of management and service
provisioning
NEBS-compliant Multi-serviceAggregator in Central Office (CO)Suitable for CO and street cabinet de-ployment with NEBS compliance andDry Contact alarm interface, the A-2140 can be used in the CO to aggregate multiple business customersand deliver flexible, affordable E-Line,E-LAN and multicast or E-Tree Ether-net services as well as TDM services.• Rich set of interfaces with high port
density allows aggregating manycustomers of various types
• A complete solution working with A-100, A-1180 and A-210 demarca-tion devices, providing end-to-end management and OAM functions
• Single-strand fiber interfaces, reducing fiber cost almost by half
• Support for TDM grooming functions (T1/E1 to OC-3/STM-1),helping keep the existing TDM-based services unchanged whileproviding new Ethernet services.
FTTH/FTTC Aggregator forTriple-Play ServicesThe A-2140 also delivers triple-playservices in FTTH/FTTC environments. It features all the standards-based mul-ticast functions with full protectionagainst both network failure and videosource failure. Carriers and serviceproviders are able to build a single in-frastructure to serve both business andresidential markets.• Connection-oriented multicast
solution for IPTV that is more scalable than IP-based multicastprotocol such as PIM-SM
• Stringent QoS for guaranteed voiceand video services
• 50ms protection against both network failure and video sourcefailure
• Fast Channel Zapping and IGMPACL
• Support for Open Access Business Model
MEF-Compliant Service AttributesThe A-2140 delivers flexible, affordableFast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet access interfaces, supporting point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and multi-point-to-multipoint services. Customertraffic can be mapped to connectionsusing any combination of rules fromlayer 1 to layer 3.The A-2140 fully supports SLAs defined by MEF service definitions including:• Committed Information Rate (CIR)• Excess Information Rate (EIR)• Priority for bounded delay and jitter• Protection levels (sub-10sec or sub-
50ms)
In addition to pure Ethernet connectivity, service providers can migrate legacyTDM traffic onto their Carrier Ethernetnetwork using Nokia Siemens Networks Circuit Emulation Servicesmodules that provide ITU-T compliantE1/T1, E3/T3 and STM-1/OC-3 inter-faces.
Full Protection and ReliabilityThe A-2140 has been designed to deliver the SONET-like reliability thatcarriers demand, but with the price, performance and scalability of CarrierEthernet. Unlike other products thatbase their protection mechanism onSpanning Tree Protocol, which leads to poor scalability, long and non-deter-ministic failover time, the protectionmechanism of the A-2140 is similar to MPLS Fast Reroute, and thus canachieve sub-50ms fail-over time. It also offers an end-to-end protectionmechanism that protects against anytypes of failure within sub-10seconds,according to service profiles.
Industry-Leading Service Provisioning and ManagementSolution Nokia Siemens Networks Service Provisioningfor EthernetNokia Siemens Networks’ ASPEN solution is the industry’s simplest network management and servicemanagement platform for managingCarrier Ethernet services. ASPEN de-livers enhanced service managementcapabilities for rapid service provision-ing, comprehensive network and element management, performanceand fault management, and seamlessintegration with existing OSS applica-tions. ASPEN software allows carriersand service providers to reliably andcost-effectively manage all elements ofthe network to deliver the most reliable, scalable and cost-effective Ethernetservice offerings. Using a multi-layeredmodular architecture, ASPEN softwaresupports large, dynamic carrier-classnetworks and is ideal for minimizinghardware deployment time, serviceplanning, provisioning and monitoring.
