If your child shows aggressive behavior frequently, he might have developed Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Often, parents and teachers misunderstand such children and this further complicates the picture. It is thus, very important to understand Oppositional Defiant Disorder to deal well with children with this condition. What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder? Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a behavioral disorder in children, characterized by rebellious and hostile behavior. Children with ODD display wild and impolite behavior and are non-cooperative towards friends, teachers, family and relatives. ODD is found in children aged below 12 years, and boys are more vulnerable to develop this disorder than girls. Facts on ODD Lifetime prevalence of ODD is estimated to be 10.2%, with 11.2 % in males and 9.2% in females. Around 92.4% of those with lifetime ODD suffer from one or the other lifetime DSM-IV disorders like anxiety, mood, impulse-control, and substance use disorders. ODD is temporally primary in the majority of cases for most comorbid disorders. Early onset (before age 8) and comorbidity predict slow speed of recovery of ODD. Causes of ODD Factors that causes ODD are:  Genetic predisposition- Children may inherit the disorder from a family member with mental or psychological health issues.  Biological factor - some abnormal changes in the function of neurotransmitters of the brain  External factors - psychological environment at home or at school It may be noted that Oppositional Defiant Disorder is often coupled with other psychological concerns in children like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, amongst others. A child is more prone to develop a behavioral disorder such as ODD if he belongs to a family with history of alcoholism or drug addiction or has been a witness to violence or abuse. Children forced to follow too rigid rules and regulations and subjected to brutal punishments often develop behavioral disorders.

Some common signs and symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder are:

1.  Frequent anger and short-temperedness2.  Disobedience and wild behavior3.  Arguing with elders, not even listening to their requests

4.  Getting offended easily5.  Annoying others intentionally6.  Putting the blame for own mistakes on others

7.  Mood swings8.  Malicious behavior

Dealing with children with ODD

One must understand that a naughty child may display some of the above mentionedsymptoms, but a child with Oppositional

Defiant Disorder can be identified if hedisplays at least four of these symptoms.Once you feel that your child may havedeveloped ODD, intervention by a

psychologist is essential to get the childassessed.

Treatment for Oppositional Defiant

Disorder

Treatment for ODD involves various typesof psychotherapy and training for the childand the parents. The treatment is donewith a systematic approach and it often

takes a longer time. Medication is generallynot used unless any other disorder co-exists with it.

The various therapies that are generallyused for treating ODD are - Individual andfamily counseling therapy, Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), Cognitive problem-solving training, Social skills training and Parent training.

These therapies can show positive results, but it may take months to appear. The resultsoften vary from child to child and the problem may persist once the therapy isdiscontinued. Thus, a need arises to find an alternative that can solve the underlyingcause and raise the consciousness level of children.
