Focus on Church Starting

Art GroomesChurch Starting Specialist

A Marathon and Church PlantingDid you hear about George Chmiel’s marathon mission? On September 11, 2016, Chmiel began a 3,031 mile marathon from San Diego, CA to Ground Zero in New York City. He will run an average of 50 miles a day in order to arrive in Manhattan on Veterans’ Day. He is seeking to raise one million dollars for the Guardian for Heroes Foundation, an organization that helps combat veterans through life coaching and fitness programs. Chmiel hopes that this effort will also help unite our country. In some major city stops along his route, Chmiel will meet and celebrate veterans with concerts by nationally-known artists. George Chmiel saw a need among combat veterans returning from war, facing depression and trying to adjust, and he took action. Believers can take action also. We can take actions to start churches in this marathon of life. Starting new churches can meet the needs of many who are helpless, hopeless and despondent. When the need to respond is embraced and we take steps in faith, the Lord will send others to help. After all, He is the God who sends. We read in Matthew 28:18-20 (HCSB): 18Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given Me in heaven and on earth. 19Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Our journey in life is like a marathon and the task is great, but the Lord promises to be with us always. He has also prayed that we might be united (John 17:20-21) so that the world will believe that He was sent. The cross of Christ provides eternal life and allows us to be united in Christ. Our unity displays God’s glory to a watching world and more churches can be started during the marathon. We have a promise and a prayer, so let’s stand united and make disciples while running life’s marathon. Contact the Mid-South Baptist Association if you’re interested in starting churches or helping in some way.

Ministry OpportunitiesGolden Offering for Tennessee Missions

Mid-South Baptist Association churches gave $118,991.24 to the 2015 Golden Offering for Tennessee M issions (GOTM). Because of their generous support, GOTM has returned $11,899.12 (10%) to the MSBA. These extra funds will assist with the association strategies of Church Starting and Church Strengthening. Thank you to our churches for giving to Tennessee missions and to the GOTM for reinvesting your gifts back into the association.

A Word from the Executive Director of Missionsby Dr. Mitch Martin, Executive Director of Missions

It was a pastor who first explained the gospel to me. That same pastor, who is now 87 years old and living in California, later baptized me as a ten-year-old boy. Then as an eleven-year-old boy, a different pastor was preaching a revival for us when I felt God calling me into the ministry. He was actually a professor at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and is now enjoying his reward in heaven. When I was licensed to preach, another pastor signed the document. He is retired and living in Atlanta. When Myra and I were married, it was two pastors who presided. It was a pastor who gave me my first job in a local church. That same pastor later signed my ordination papers. When I became a pastor, my former pastor gave me some of his books to help me start my library. He is retired and living in Virginia and his twin brother was a member at Bellevue. When my father in law passed, it was a pastor who spoke words of comfort. Pastors have taught me the word of God. They have been an example to me. They have shown me godliness and compassion. Pastors have been my friends and inspiration. I’m sure you could say the same. The Bible says God gave gifted men as gifts to His church. Aren’t you grateful for wise, godly, moral pastors? October is Pastor Appreciation Month. Be sure to thank the pastors and staff in your life. And bring your pastor with you to the Annual Celebration on Monday night, October 24, at Bartlett Hills Baptist Church.
