r What is NuSTAR ?

Basic research in

Nuclear STructureNuclear Astrophysics

Nuclear Reactionswith beams of short-lived

nucleiat energies 0 – 1.5 GeV/u @

FAIRInternational collaboration (established in 2003)

chair: W.Gelletly, Univ. of Surrey, UKmembers: > 700 nuclear scientists

> 120 institutions > 25 countriespurpose: superstructure of 9 experimental collaborations at

FAIR including nuclear theory

International collaboration for physics with radioactive ion beams at FAIR

HIC for FAIR aims at an exploitation of the hightech opportunities at the FAIR accelerator complex. The HIC will guarantee a dominant role in selected

NuSTAR experiments and theory for Hessian universities, its students, and society.

r Motivation for NuSTAR

What are the limits of nuclear existence ?

How does the nuclear force depend on a variation of the proton-to-neutron ratio ?

How do collective nuclear phenomena emerge from nucleons and nuclear force ?

How are complex nuclei formed from the underlying constituents and QCD ?

What nuclei are relevant for cosmic processes and what are their properties ?
