The large-scale expansion of technical education system offering degree/diploma programmes mayhave by and large satisfied the aspirations of students, parents, employers and the public in general. However, there is a growing concern about the quality of the output from the system. The prevailingsituation spurs on the quest for training of faculty/staff of technical institutions, so that they playeffectively their role as agents for change and development. It is therefore, essential that theseinstitutions are in a dynamic state and continue to adapt and change so that the inputs provided bythem make a difference to better the conditions of technical manpower. Even with a well-designedcurriculum and provision of all resources, the results are likely to fall short of expectations, if there islack of competent and motivated staff, who are not updated in content and do not possess the requisitepractical skills.
National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh is alive to thisneed of quality education in technical institutions of the country. It undertakes staff development as anon going activity through training and re-training of the faculty and staff of technical institutions. In order to make staff development more effective and demand-driven, the institute formulates its annual planthrough interaction with Secretary/Director of Technical Education and need-assessment workshops,at the state headquarters, as well as feedback from the beneficiaries through informal interaction.Institute also undertakes Faculty Development and Quality Improvement Projects on the specialrequest of the states through out the year.
A total of 117 programmes have been identified by the institute to be conducted in the year 2009-10at NITTTR, Chandigarh and also at institutions/industry.
In accordance with the policy of Government of India, the expenditure on account of TA/DA to undergothe training programmes for teachers of Government funded/aided engineering colleges will be borneby NITTTR, Chandigarh and for teachers of private engineering colleges, it will have to be borne bythem/their sponsoring organizations. However, no course fee will be charged from the participants for attending the training programmes In the case of participants from government funded/aided technicalinstitutes from other regions attending the National Programmes, TA will be restricted to AC-III Tier with
Shatabdi Express from New Delhi to Chandigarh.
It is hoped that the engineering colleges in the country would avail of this opportunity by sponsoringmaximum number of teachers/staff to train and retrain them, as one of the surest means to yield highquality technical manpower from their institutions.
