INVISION BIOMEDICAL'S OPHTHALMIC LENS DESIGN & PROTOTYPING FACILITY

CRYOGENIC LATHING AND MILLING TECHNOLOGYFOR INTRAOCULAR/CONTACT LENSES

Step 1:Intraocular lenses begin as 2.5 mm thick circular disks, also known as blanks. The blanks shown here are made of a hydrophobic acrylic material.

Step 2:

The blanks are first seated on specially designed icing mandrels.

The icing technology involves freezing a thin layer of water between the blank and mandrel.

In a matter of seconds the blank is rigidly clamped onto the mandrel.

Step 3:

On our ultra-precision CNC optical lathe, the mandrel is maintained at subzero temperatures.

The polymer blank is diamond cut to provide the curved first surface of the lens.

Step 4:The haptic shape and optic diameter are then outlined by a precision CNC Mini-mill.As with the lathing process, this is done at sub-zero temperatures.

Step 5:Finally, the blank is flipped and transferred to another mandrel and goes back to the lathe for the second optical surface to be cut.

What's left is an intraocular lens ready to be polished, inspected, and packaged.This is a wax-free process - clean-up prior to tumbling is minimal.
