May is testing time and this month includes Advanced Placement (AP) exams and STAR testing. As we get closer to the California STAR assessments, I’d like to take a little time to talk about the tests student take, why they are important, and how the school uses the results to improve instruction. STAR testing begins on Friday, May 18 and runs for four days until May 23. Make-ups will follow on the 24. In the past, STAR testing was scheduled before the AP Exams. But now that STAR testing is after APs it allows more time for students and teachers to prepare for the difficult College Board exams, and this scheduling also allows more time for the instructional delivery of the California standards-based core curriculum. Students in grades 9-11 will take tests that assess their proficiency on the California Content Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, History, and Science. All students are tested in Language Arts, and all ninth graders will be tested in math. In addition, to STAR, 9th grade students will take a Practice PSAT and an online mathematics diagnostic developed by UCLA. All tenth and eleventh grade students will take history, and tenth grade students will take Life Science. Additional end-of-course tests will be given in math and science including general math, algebra, geometry, and Summative Math. The science end-of-course tests include Earth Science, biology, chemistry, and physics. Students are scored on five performance levels; 5-Advanced, 4-Proficient, 3-Basic, 2- Below Basic, and 1-Far Below Basic. The STAR tests are the most significant component of the California Department of Education’s school accountability system, which also includes the California High School Exit exam, and graduation rates; of which OPHS students achieve over a 99% success rate. The scores students attain on the STAR tests are calculated into the school’s Academic Performance Index (API) and each school receives an API score out of 100. Oak Park High School’s 2011 API score was 908. This API score, while a narrow measurement of the school as a whole, is very widely published and is often the first thing families look at when researching prospective schools and communities in which to The Principal’s Message pfc newsletter O A K P A R K H I G H S C H O O L May 2012 www.oakparkusd.org/ophs raise their children. Superintendent’s MessageA Call To Action!

It is my hope that these children achieve their goalsand more. My worry right now, quite seriously, is howcan we continue to help children realize these goals anddreams in the future.

You should be receiving a letter in the mail fromOUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE, a subcommittee ofour Education Foundation, Friends of Oak ParkSchools. The group is made up of concerned parentswith the full support of the Board of Education. Thesituation we are facing for next year is severe. The letteroutlines the issues and what we all need to do to try tomitigate the situation.

I hope you will carefully read the letter and thenreflect on the situation we find ourselves in. The letteris being sent to all Oak Park USD families and thosewith children entering next year. If we all participateand buy a brick, we will put a major dent into the crisiswe are facing in the coming school year. School systemsall over California are gearing up for catastrophic cuts.We will be among them unless we take matters into ourown hands and take the necessary action.

Your children deserve nothing less. We strive toprovide a level of education that is above and beyond inOak Park, but it is becoming more and more of achallenge each year the state budget crisis drags on. The board discussed and approved bids for severalprojects to be implemented this summer with fundsprovided by Measure R, our School ImprovementBond of 2008. These projects include repairs to rampsto portable classrooms throughout the district, mod-ernization of the 300 Building at BrooksideElementary School and of restrooms at Oak Park HighSchool, and roof repairs at Medea Creek MiddleSchool.

The Safe School Plans for all schools wereapproved. Annual updating of these plans andapproval of them by the Board of Education is requiredby law since these plans outline procedures for staff andstudents to follow in case of an emergency.

College News

Important College Dates & Deadlines for Seniors:

May & June: are still critical months for seniors because last semester grades do count! Spring semester classes(that were listed on the student’s admission application) that are dropped or not passed with at least a "C" mayresult in a college rescinding its offer. Most competitive universities expect seniors to maintain at least a 3.0GPA in the senior year.

Admissions for the Class of 2012

For fall 2012, the University of California admitted a record 80,289 applicants for freshman admission out of asimilarly record setting applicant pool of 126,455.Table 2 below (New UC Freshman Admission Rates), showsthe number of admitted students by residency for each UC campus as well as for the system over the past threeyears. The next chart (Fall 2012 Freshman Admit Profiles), shows freshman admission profiles at each UCcampus with SAT scores and high school GPA comparisons.

California ResidentsThe number of California resident students admitted to the University increased by 2,155 students over fall2011, or 3.6 percent. Despite this increase, the University expects to enroll approximately the same number ofstudents in fall 2012 as it did in 2011. (33,000)

The number of newly admitted California students did not keep pace with the number of applicants, however. As a result, the admission rate – the percentage of applicants admitted – dropped for the system from 69.7percent in 2011 to 65.8 percent in 2012. All campuses except Davis, Riverside and San Diego became moreselective in their freshman admission decisions for California residents.

Changes in campus admission offers for California students are driven by campus enrollment targets, theanticipated rate at which students accept these offers, and, in some cases, by enrollment outcomes in recentyears. Most campuses saw modest adjustments from 2011.

The University of California will continue to honor its commitment to the California Master Plan for HigherEducation. Students who are in the top 9 percent of their high school or top 9 percent of the state are guaran-teed admission to the University. Through a process called “referral,” these students will be offered the oppor-tunity to be admitted to UC Merced if they do not receive an offer of admission from any campus to whichthey applied.

Out-of-State and International StudentsThe number of out-of-state and international students admitted to the University of California also increasedfrom fall 2011 to fall 2012, from 12,144 to 18,846.

The increase did not keep pace with the 56.2 percent increase in applications from nonresidents. Therefore, they systemwide admission rates for out-of-state and international students dropped significantly between thetwo years. For out-of-state students, the admission rate dropped from 60.7 percent in 2011 to 53.9 percent in2012; for international students, it went from 64.1 percent in 2011 to 61.3 percent in 2012.

Despite the increase in the number of out-of-state and international students, the University expects to remainbelow the 10 percent cap on local nonresident undergraduate enrollment for fall 2012.
