ABOUT L IGHT OPER A WORKS

LIGHT OPERA WORKS is a resident professional not-for-profit music theater in Evanston, founded in 1980. The company’s mission is to produce and present musical theater from a variety of world traditions. Such works include American, British, Viennese and French operetta, classic American musical theater, as well as contemporary fare. Since its inaugural season in 1981, LIGHT OPERA WORKS continues to be a leader in the United States for the presentation of these historically important and theatrically delightful works of art in productions similar in size and scope to their originals, in modern productions with professional artists and full orchestra. LIGHT OPERA WORKS is a member of the Illinois Arts Alliance, League of Chicago Theatres, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the Evanston and Wilmette Chambers of Commerce, and Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau. A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

Welcome to OPERETTA’S GREATEST HITS! I’m delighted to present to you this program of gorgeous music from operetta’s dazzling golden age, and everyone at Light Opera Works is especially excited to be mounting our fall production for the first time in the beautiful and historic Nichols Concert Hall! I’m grateful to my six singers, all stars of past Light Opera Works productions, and to our wonderful musical director, Marta Johnson. I’d also like to thank Michael Kotze and

Roger Bingaman for putting this program together, and to acknowledge the many hours Roger put into creating the musical arrangements for our instrumental ensemble—without his work, this program never would have happened! We hope this is the first in a series of Light Opera Works fall concerts, in which we’ll present a wide variety of musical theater favorites in this magnificent hall at the Music Institute of Chicago. ALICIA BERNECHE has appeared at Light Opera Works in BITTER SWEET (Sarah Millick), THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE (Mabel), THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD (Elsie

Maynard), IOLANTHE (Phyllis), and THE MUSIC MAN (Marian Paroo). She has appeared at Lyric Opera of Chicago as Daisy Buchanan in THE GREAT GATSBY and as Helen Niles in MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA, and was seen in the world premiere production of Philip Glass’ GALILEO GALILEI at the Good-man Theatre, the Barbican, and Brooklyn Academy of Music. She appears regularly at the Austin Lyric Opera, most recently as Gretel in HANSEL UND GRETEL. Other compa-nies include Portland Opera, Kentucky Opera, Arizona Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Omaha, Orlando Opera, Piedmont Opera, and the roster of the Metropolitan Opera. This summer, Alicia appeared in a rare perfor-mance of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammer-stein’s musical MUSIC IN THE AIR with Music by the Lake in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.

NATALIE FORD returns to Light Opera Works, where she was last seen as Julie Jordan in CAROUSEL, as well as in MY FAIR LADY (Eliza), A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (Anne), IOLANTHE

(Celia), GIGI (Gigi), OKLAHOMA! (Laurey), and BERLIN TO BROADWAY WITH KURT WEILL. Other credits include THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE at the Marriott Theatre, THE SOUND OF MUSIC and SWEENEY TODD at Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace, MAN OF LA MANCHA (Antonia) with Chamber Opera Chicago, and A WONDERFUL LIFE (Mary) with Theatre at the Center. Natalie has been a guest soloist with the Peninsula Sympho-ny in the San Francisco Bay Area. She holds a Master of Music in Voice from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Valparaiso University.

MATTHEW GIEBEL made his Light Opera Works debut in 2009 as Frederic in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. He attended the Chautauqua Young Artist Program, where he

sang Camille in Picker’s THERESE RAQUIN and Don Ramiro in Rossini’s LA CENEREN-TOLA in their scenes program. At the University of Southern California, he sang the title role in Lowell Lieberman’s MISS LONELYHEARTS and Tebaldo in Bellini’s I CAPULETI E I MONTECCHI. He was a studio artist at Central City Opera in 2008, and returned in 2009 as Henrik in Sondheim’s A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. Matthew made his debut with the Sarasota Opera Company as a studio artist, singing the Royal Herald in Verdi’s DON CARLOS and understudying Nemorino in L’ELISIR D’AMORE. He also appeared with the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center in their outreach production of THE ELIXIR OF LOVE. Since 2010, Matthew has sung with the Lyric Opera of Chicago Chorus, and this winter will sing in the Chicago Symphony Chorus.

JAMES RANK has appeared in many Light Opera Works produc-tions, including CANDIDE (Voltaire/Pangloss), THE FANTASTICKS (El Gallo), and 110 IN THE SHADE

(File). He was recently seen as Char-lemagne in The Musical Theatre Company’s PIPPIN and in the title role of THE CHRIST-MAS MIRACLE OF JONATHAN TOOMEY at Provision Theatre. He appeared at Lyric Opera of Chicago (Kromow in THE MERRY WIDOW), Writers’ Theatre (SHE LOVES ME, THE MINISTER’S WIFE), Peninsula Players (Fredrik in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC), Next Theater (THE AMERICAN DREAMS SONG-BOOK, Jeff Award winner, Best Actor in a Revue), Drury Lane Water Tower (GRAND HOTEL, Jeff Award nominee, Best Actor in a

GEORGE ANDREW WOLFF returns to Light Opera Works, after appearing as Jack Point in THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD as well as in DIE FLEDERMAUS, GYPSY

LOVE, COUNTESS MARITZA, and SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, for which he earned a Jeff Award nomination. He was in the national tour of A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL and Broadway in Chicago’s THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE at Drury Lane Water Tower. Other credits include the Beadle in SWEENEY

TODD, RAGTIME, HAIRSPRAY (Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace), Nicely in GUYS AND DOLLS, Corny in HAIRSPRAY, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, THE PRODUCERS, SUNSET BOULEVARD (Marriott Theatre), as well as roles at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the Ravinia Festival, Monteux Opera Festival, Anchor-age Opera, Theater at the Center, the Fulton Theatre, and Bailiwick Repertory, where he was Quasimodo in the world-premiere THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Recently, George made his Off-Broadway debut as Beethoven in THE HUNCHBACK VARIA-TIONS, after originating the role with Theater Oobleck in Chicago. He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association.

RUDY HOGENMILLER (Stage Director/Choreographer / Artistic Director) has directed and/or choreographed many Light Opera Works productions, including MAN OF LA MANCHA, CAMELOT, RODGERS & HART: A CELEBRATION, THE STUDENT PRINCE, BRIGADOON, HELLO, DOLLY!, I DO! I DO!, THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, C’EST LA VIE, MY FAIR LADY, and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. For almost 30 years he has been an actor, director and choreographer in Chicago, working at Candlelight Dinner Playhouse, Drury Lane Oakbrook, Marriott Theatre, Drury Lane Evergreen Park, Theatre at the Center, Northlight Theatre, Mercury Theatre, Pegasus Players, and Chamber Opera Chicago. As a dancer he toured nationally and internationally from Los Angeles to Japan to Egypt with EVITA, A CHORUS LINE, and THE FANTASTICKS. He has received 17 nominations and six Joseph Jefferson Awards for choreography and/or direction, and is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.

MARTA JOHNSON (Music Director / Conductor) is making her debut as music director and conductor for Light Opera Works. Previous shows with the company as

assistant conductor include THE STUDENT PRINCE, THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD, and HMS PINAFORE. She works with musicians of all ages and experience levels, with such companies as Lyric Opera of Chicago, Music of the Baroque, Emerald City Theatre, Piven Theatre, Sherrill Milnes VOICExperience, and the Elgin Symphony. Passionate about introducing and developing a love of classical music in young people, Marta is the music director for Chicago Opera Theater for Teens, a collaboration between Chicago Opera Theater and After School Matters, drawing teens from all across Chicago to learn classical voice technique, acting, dancing, and resulting in a fully staged production each semester. Marta also recently became music director at Church of the Advent in Logan Square.

ROGER L. BINGAMAN (Company Music Director / Musical Arrangements) most recently conducted CAMELOT, THE SECRET GARDEN, THE STUDENT PRINCE, BRIGADOON, HELLO, DOLLY!, I DO! I DO!, CAROUSEL, THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, MY FAIR LADY, and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at Light Opera Works, where he has held many positions, including conductor, chorus master, as-sistant conductor and pianist. In December of 2005, he was named the company’s mu-sic director. Since 1999, Mr. Bingaman has been the director of the apprentice pro-gram and chorus master for the Sarasota Opera, where he began his tenure in 1998 as an assistant conductor. “Bing” is the mu-sic director of Irving Park Lutheran Church and artistic director of the Irving Park Fine Arts Series. He is also choir director and or-ganist at Ezra Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish congregation in Skokie. Bing has worked with Lyric Opera’s Opera-in-the-Neighborhoods program, Michigan Opera Theatre, the Savoyaires, Milwaukee Opera Theatre, Dayton Opera, Opera Lenawee, and Opera Lafayette, among others.

HARVEY LOBSTEIN (Orchestra Contrac-tor / Music Librarian) has been working in Chicago as a freelance musician since 1979. In 1985, he won the audition for concert-master at Light Opera Works and has held that position ever since. With this season’s CAMELOT, Harvey completed his 82rd production as the company’s concertmas-ter. Since 1988, he has been orchestral contractor for Light Opera Works and is responsible for organizing orchestras for the company. He gratefully acknowledges the musicians of the Chicago Federation of Musicians, Local 10-208 for the high level of professionalism and artistry they bring to all Light Opera Works productions.

BRIDGET McDONOUGH (General Manager) has been employed in arts management since graduating from Northwestern University in 1978. In 1980, she co-founded Light Opera Works with Philip Kraus and others. She holds membership in the Illinois Arts Alliance, is past president of the Rotary Club of Evanston, and served on the boards of the Evanston Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, Evanston Chamber of Commerce, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, Around the Coyote, as well as the School of Communication Alumni Board at Northwestern University. She is currently on the boards of the North Shore International Network and the Musicians Club of Women and the tourism committee of Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. In 2008, she served as one of the international judges at the Second Vladimir Kurochkin International Competition of Young Artists of Operetta and Musicals in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and was honored by the Evanston Chamber of Commerce with their 2009 Public Service / Nonprofit Person of the Year Award.
