OUR COMMUNITY

Our most recent Seeking Summits adventure has gained a lot of interest, which has involved many incredible people highly motivated to make this possible. Recreate’s purpose is to provide ‘life-changing experiences for youth with disabilities’, and we think we nailed it. The following is a recap of events which led up to our biggest adventure to date, and one that we will never forget. The origins of the Seeking Summits Mt Ruapehu summit attempt hark back to March 2014 when Recreate operations staff Brent, Nicola, Matt and Renee completed the 5 Volcanoes in 5 Days fundraising event for Recreate. After summiting Taranaki, Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Hauhangatahi, Mt Ruapehu was the fi nal challenge. As they arrived at the top overlooking Crater Lake they started to envision Recreate youth tackling the climb. Once they got back in the offi ce, the planning of the programme with Tim and Jared from Adventure Specialties Trust commenced. Recreate has a longstanding relationship with Adventure Specialties featuring 10 years’ worth of programmes and outdoor adventures including white water rafting, canyoning, snow-caving, and sea kayaking. The two parties established a 2-day programme consisting of an educational snow-skills session to learn how to trek with crampons, how to use ice axes and general mountain safety, as well as the climb itself on day 2. Strong leader : participant ratios were considered essential, and climbing would only commence with ideal alpine conditions. After a failed attempt in August 2014 due to poor weather conditions, it was back to the drawing board to plan for the following year. The Central Plateau is prone to wickedly interchangeable and wild weather, so creating a good window of opportunity is very tough to achieve. Both Recreate and Adventure Specialties were disappointed, but still keen to progress on.Fast forward to May 2015, Recreate NZ receives a few nominations for the I Am Auckland awards put on by the Auckland Council’s Youth Advisory Panel. Programme Coordinator Matt Alpe ended up winning the Supreme Youth Worker award as well as the Safety and Belonging Award. The organisational win for Recreate was the Youth Health award. With a touch of positive media exposure for Recreate after the award successes, General Manager Brent Jenkin reached out to Dan Buckingham at Attitude TV to see if he could help with promotion. Dan

was keen to get involved, and this also lead to discussions around the fast approaching Seeking Summits adventure. Dan’s colleague Robbie Francis quickly jumped on board and from there, begun liaising with Matt over the plans for the 2015 attempt. With only 4 weeks’ notice, Robbie managed to organise a fi lm crew together and prepare fi lming pre-climb in Auckland and the climb itself. The 6 youth participants consisted of 5 guys and 1 girl between the ages of 18 and 30 years. They were all keen to get started and to be part of this adventure of a life time. A week prior to climbing day, Tim and Matt were discussing the weather forecast and things were looking very promising. The thought of being undone by harsh conditions would have been heart-breaking, especially after all the fi lming work by Attitude and planning by Recreate and Adventure Specialties.Thursday rolls around and it’s time to hit the road and head down the line. The group settle in at their lodge, start an outdoor fi re and hang out for the night.

Friday morning arrives and the sun comes up on a blue bird day with no wind. In other words: perfection. The crew are greeted by the two Tims from Adventure Specialties who brief them on gear required for alpine conditions. Geared up they hit the mountain for lessons around wearing crampons and ice axes. Demonstrations of self-arresting and mountain safety were carried out to ensure that youth and leaders knew what to do in the case of a slip. This was quickly followed by snowball fi ghts with youth, leaders, instructors and fi lm crew as for some this was their fi rst time to the snow. After an educational day on the mountain the crew return for an early night at the lodge.

At 5am Saturday morning the wakeup call is rung throughout the lodge and impressively the group are geared up for action. They hit the mountain at 7.30am ready to catch the early chair lifts up at 8am. It is an incredible clear, warm and windless day as the crew start the climb, ice axe in hand following a rhythm of step, step with a plant of the axe.An hour into the ascent one of the youth climbers can’t go on as the physicality of this challenge has proven too much. The decision was made that Brent and Recreate’s intern Raya would walk back to the café with the climber. The remaining fi ve were as determined as ever, set a good pace and continued the climb steadily but surely up the glacier towards the Crater Lake. With short intervals for breaks of water and snacks they continue up the mountain stopping at 12pm for lunch only 40 minutes from the Crater Lake.

As they continued on, Chris, one of the climbers who has Down Syndrome and a leg height discrepancy, struggled to keep up with the group and had a brief moment wondering if he could carry on. After a little pep talk with Nicola, the group decided to slow the pace and continue on as Chris was so determined to get to the top with the others.Arriving at the Crater rim and looking down upon the Crater Lake created a real buzz amongst the group. Everyone was so stoked with getting this far, and it was only a short assent to the dome hut where they had their moment to celebrate the group’s success. Getting there was incredible, the views of neighbouring Ngauruhoe and Tongariro were mind blowing and the climbers were so proud of their achievement. After a celebration on the top with a quick victory dance, the wind temperatures dropped, and it was time to continue on to ensure they caught the last of the chair lifts. Removing their crampons they slid down into the plateau to follow it around the rim to enjoy a fun return down the hill, taking every opportunity to get a snow slide in! Making it down with everyone still intact, tired and yet with the biggest grins on their faces was a huge success. This is truly what Seeking Summits is all about.Recreate would like to thank Ngati Rangi for granting consent for the documentation of the climb. Also a big thank you to RAL, DOC and to Attitude TV for their support.

Young Adult adventurer Chris Radley stops by to tell us about Seeking Summits Mt. Ruapehu climb. What are some previous programmes you have been on with Recreate?

Urban events, Sea Kayaking in the Marlborough Sounds, the Otago Rail Trail, two previous Mt. Ruapehu trips and many getaways.

What did you fi nd challenging about this climb?Using the crampons was quite diffi cult, so was getting up early on the day of the hike. And the distance up hill. Getting the timing right on when to jump off the chair lift was tricky too.

How did you feel when you made it to the top?I was excited, and relieved that I was at the top. I felt that I had achieved something, and the view was breath taking!

Was there a point where you thought you couldn’t make it?I thought that I would make it but it would just take time.

What’s the next adventure you would like to go on?More biking trips, abseiling, sky diving and rock climbing.

Apart from the climb, what else stood out about the whole trip? The trip down to the mountain area, eating at the pizzeria, hot pools and good company.

The awesome team at Bivouac donated a great pair of Gronell hiking boots for Chris back in 2014, and we are so grateful for the support. He took his boots to the top, as well as last years Seeking Summits hiking adventure. Thank you Bivouac for the support!
