Work area safetyKeep work area clean and well lit. Clutteredor dark areas invite accidents.Do not operate power tools in explosiveatmospheres, such as in the presence offlammable liquids, gases or dust. Powertools create sparks which may ignite the dustor fumes.Keep children and bystanders away whileoperating a power tool. Distractions cancause you to lose control.

Electrical safetyPower tool plugs must match the outlet.Never modify the plug in any way. Do notuse any adapter plugs with earthed(grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugsand matching outlets will reduce risk of electricshock.Avoid body contact with earthed or groundedsurfaces such as pipes, radiators, rangesand refrigerators. There is an increased riskof electric shock if your body is earthed orgrounded.Do not expose power tools to rain or wetconditions. Water entering a power tool willincrease the risk of electric shock.Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cordfor carrying, pulling or unplugging the powertool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharpedges or moving parts. Damaged or entangledcords increase the risk of electric shock. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdooruse. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor usereduces the risk of electric shock. If operating the power tool in damp locationsis unavoidable, use a Ground Fault CircuitInterrupter (GFCI) protected supply. Use ofan GFCI reduce the risk of electric shock.

Personal safetyStay alert, watch what you are doing anduse common sense when operating a

power tool. Do not use a power tool whileyou are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattentionwhile operating power tools may result inserious personal injury.Use personal protective equipment. Alwayswear eye protection. Protective equipmentsuch as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hardhat, or hearing protection used for appropriateconditions will reduce personal injuries.Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure theswitch is in the off-position beforeconnecting to power source and / or batterypack, picking up or carrying the tool.Carrying power tools with your finger on theswitch or energizing power tools that have theswitch on invites accidents.Remove any adjusting key or wrench beforeturning the power tool on. A wrench or akey left attached to a rotating part of thepower tool may result in personal injury.Do not overreach. Keep proper footing andbalance at all times. This enables bettercontrol of the power tool in unexpectedsituations.Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothingor jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing andgloves away from moving parts. Looseclothes, jewelry or long hair can be caught inmoving parts. If devices are provided for the connectionof dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properlyused. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

Power tool use and careDo not force the power tool. Use thecorrect power tool for your application. Thecorrect power tool will do the job better andsafer at the rate for which it was designed.Do not use the power tool if the switch doesnot turn it on and off. Any power tool thatcannot be controlled with the switch isdangerous and must be repaired.

Read all safety warnings and instructions. Failure to follow the warningsand instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

SAVE ALL WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCEThe term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool orbattery-operated (cordless) power tool.

General Power Tool Safety Warnings

Page 3: Operating/Safety Instructions RZ1500 RZ2000

Disconnect the plug from the power sourceand/or the battery pack from the power toolbefore making any adjustments, changingaccessories, or storing power tools. Suchpreventive safety measures reduce the risk ofstarting the power tool accidentally.Store idle power tools out of the reach ofchildren and do not allow persons unfamiliarwith the power tool or these instructions tooperate the power tool. Power tools aredangerous in the hands of untrained users.Maintain power tools. Check for misalignmentor binding of moving parts, breakage ofparts and any other condition that mayaffect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorlymaintained power tools.

Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properlymaintained cutting tools with sharp cuttingedges are less likely to bind and are easier tocontrol.Use the power tool, accessories and toolbits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditionsand the work to be performed. Use of thepower tool for operations different from thoseintended could result in a hazardous situation.

ServiceHave your power tool serviced by a qualifiedrepair person using only identicalreplacement parts. This will ensure that thesafety of the power tool is maintained.

Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaceswhen performing an operation where thecutting tool may contact hidden wiring orits own cord. Contact with a "live" wire willmake exposed metal parts of the tool "live"and shock the operator. If cutting into existingwalls or other blind areas where electricalwiring may exist is unavoidable, disconnectall fuses or circuit breakers feeding thisworksite.Always make sure the work surface is freefrom nails and other foreign objects.Cutting into a nail can cause the bit and thetool to jump and damage the bit.Never hold the workpiece in one hand andthe tool in the other hand when in use.Never place hands near or below cuttingsurface. Clamping the material and guidingthe tool with both hands is safer. Never lay workpiece on top of hardsurfaces, like concrete, stone, etc...Protruding cutting bit may cause tool to jump.Always wear safety goggles and dustmask. Use only in well ventilated area.Using personal safety devices and working insafe environment reduces risk of injury. After changing the bits or making anyadjustments, make sure the collet nut andany other adjustment devices aresecurely tightened. Loose adjustment

device can unexpectedly shift, causing lossof control, loose rotating components will beviolently thrown.Never start the tool when the bit isengaged in the material. The bit cuttingedge may grab the material causing loss ofcontrol of the cutter.Always hold the tool with two handsduring start-up. The reaction torque of themotor can cause the tool to twist. When routing or cutting, the direction offeed with the bit’s cutting edge into thematerial is very important. Always feedthe bit into the material in the samedirection as the cutting edge is exitingfrom the material. When viewing the tool

from the top, the bit rotates clockwise. If thetool is between the workpiece and your body,

then feed the tool to your right. If theworkpiece is between the tool and your body, then feed the tool to your left. Feeding thetool in the wrong direction causes the cuttingedge of the bit to climb out of the work andpull the tool in the direction of this feed.Never use dull or damaged bits. Sharpbits must be handled with care. Damagedbits can snap during use. Dull bits requiremore force to push the tool, possibly causingthe bit to break.Never touch the bit during or immediatelyafter the use. After use the bit is too hot tobe touched by bare hands.

Never lay the tool down until the motorhas come to a complete standstill. Thespinning bit can grab the surface and pull thetool out of your control.Never use bits that have a cuttingdiameter greater than the opening in thebase. Do not use the tool for drilling purposes. This tool is not intended to be used with drillbits.Always use the tool with the depth guidesecurely attached and positioned flatagainst material being cut. The guidesecurely positioned on the material improves

Additional Safety Warnings

GFCI and personal protection devices likeelectrician’s rubber gloves and footwear willfurther enhance your personal safety.Do not use AC only rated tools with a DCpower supply. While the tool may appear towork, the electrical components of the ACrated tool are likely to fail and create a hazardto the operator.Keep handles dry, clean and free from oiland grease. Slippery hands cannot safelycontrol the power tool.Develop a periodic maintenance schedulefor your tool. When cleaning a tool becareful not to disassemble any portion ofthe tool since internal wires may bemisplaced or pinched or safety guard returnsprings may be improperly mounted.Certain cleaning agents such as gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, ammonia, etc. maydamage plastic parts.Risk of injury to user. The power cord must onlybe serviced by a Rotozip Factory ServiceCenter or Autho rized Rotozip Service Station.

Some dust created by powersanding, sawing, grinding,

drilling, and other construction activitiescontains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:• Lead from lead-based paints,• Crystalline silica from bricks and cement and

other masonry products, and• Arsenic and chromium from chemically-

treated lumber.Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type ofwork. To reduce your exposure to thesechemicals: work in a well ventilated area, andwork with approved safety equipment, such asthose dust masks that are specially designedto filter out microscopic particles.

Zipmate Abrasive Cut-Off Attachment Safety RulesAlways use wheel guard, and the Zipmate'sauxiliary handle with this abrasive cut offtool. The guard must always be securelyattached to the tool and positioned formaximum safety, so the least amount ofwheel is exposed on the operators side ofthe tool. A guard protects operator frombroken wheel fragments. The support ribs andauxiliary handle provide additional guarding, stability and control in cut off applications. Thebody of your Rotozip tool can also be used asa handle.Always be certain that the wheel guard, and Zipmate's auxiliary handle arereassembled and securely fastened to thetool when changing the point of operationfrom fire forward to fire reverse or afterchanging the wheels. A tool missing anessential safety component is dangerous tooperate. Wear proper apparel while using anabrasive cut off tool. Face shield or at leastsafety goggles, dust mask, leather gloves andshop apron capable of stopping small wheel orworkpiece fragments. This attachment is not intended to be usedwith Wet Diamond Wheels. Using water orother liquid coolants with this tool may result inelectrocution or shock. Use of Dry DiamondWheels is acceptable. Use only Type 1 abrasive cut off wheelswith the correct size arbor hole. Never usedamaged or incorrect wheel flanges orround nut. Other types of wheels are notintended to apply load on periphery and mayshatter. Wheels with arbor holes that do notmatch the mounting hardware of the tool willrun eccentrically, vibrate excessively and willcause loss of control.Do not grind on the side of Type 1 abrasivecut off wheels. Side forces applied to thesewheels may cause them to shatter.Do not use this attachment with“Woodcarving” blade or standard woodcutting toothed blades. These blades are notintended for this tool and can create loss ofcontrol during use.Abrasive Cut Off Wheels must have amaximum safe operating speed greaterthan the “no load RPM” marked on theattachment. Wheels running over the ratedspeed can fly apart and cause injury.

Before each use inspect the cut off wheelfor chips and cracks. Do not use a wheelthat may be damaged. Install a new wheel iftool was dropped. When installing a newwheel carefully handle individual cut offwheels to avoid chipping or cracking. Runthe tool at no load for one minute, holdingthe tool in the direction away from people.Wheels with flaws will normally break apartduring this time. Fragments from a wheelthat bursts during operation will fly away atgreat velocity possibly striking you orbystanders.Do not use a cut off wheel that is largerthan the maximum recommended size foryour tool, or worn down damaged wheelsfrom larger abrasive cut off tools. Wheelsintended for larger tools are not suitable for thehigher speed of a smaller tool, these wheelsmay easily burst and the fragments strike youor bystanders.Position the cord clear of the spinningwheel. Do not wrap the cord around yourarm or wrist. If you lose control and have thecord wrapped around your arm or wrist, it mayentrap you and cause injury.Keep your body positioned to either side ofthe wheel, but not in line with the wheel. Itis important to support the tool properly and toposition your body such as to minimize bodyexposure from the possible wheel binding andthe recoil of the tool.Keep hands away from cutting area andwheel. Keep your second hand on auxiliaryhandle. Hold the tool firmly to prevent lossof control. NEVER place your hand behindthe wheel since the tool may recoil overyour hand. Do not attempt to remove cutmaterial when wheel is moving. If bothhands are holding the tool, they cannot be cutby the wheelDo not “jam” the abrasive wheel into thework, apply excessive pressure or attemptto use large depths of cut while using thistool. Let the rotating wheel do the work,Abrasive Cut Off Tools are intended to “cut”the material in a series of shallow depth ofcuts. See the instructions for depth of cut laterin this manual.Avoid bouncing and snagging the wheel, especially when working corners, sharpedges etc. This can cause loss of control andtool’s recoil.

Page 6: Operating/Safety Instructions RZ1500 RZ2000

Do not run the tool while carrying it at yourside. Accidental contact with the spinningwheel could result in serious personal injury.Never lay the tool down until the motor hascome to a complete standstill. The spinningwheel can grab the surface and pull the toolout of your control.Do not use the Zipmate near flammablematerials. Sparks from the wheel could ignitethese materials.Never cut or attempt to cut magnesiumwith this attachment. The dust generatedwhen cutting magnesium is highly flammableand may be explosive under certain conditions. Regularly clean the tool’s air vents bycompressed air. Excessive accumulation ofpowdered metal inside the motor housing maycause electrical failures.

Causes and Operator Prevention of Recoil:

Recoil is a sudden reaction to a pinched, bound or misaligned rotating wheel. The wheelmay stall and cause an uncontrolled tool toback out of the kerf toward the operator whenthe tool is in the “fire forward” position, if thetool is set in the “reverse fire” position the toolmay tend to walk away from the operator. Therotation direction arrow located on the backside of the guard can be used to identify the“fire forward” and “reverse fire” positions. Theattachment is in the fire forward position whenthe directional arrow points toward theoperator, and it is in the reverse fire positionwhen the arrow is pointing away from theoperator. If an abrasive wheel or diamond wheelbecomes twisted or misaligned in the cut, theside of the wheel that is entering into the

material can dig into the top surface of thematerial causing the wheel to climb out orrecoil out of the kerf either toward or awayfrom the operator, depending on the fireforward or reverse fire orientation.Abrasive wheels may also shatter under theseconditions causing pieces or fragments tostrike or impale the operator and bystanders.Recoil or shattered wheels are the result oftool misuse and/or incorrect operatingprocedures or conditions and can be avoidedby taking proper precautions as given below:Maintain a firm grip with both hands on thetool handles and position your body andarm to allow you to resist recoil forces.Recoil forces can be controlled by theoperator, if proper precautions are taken. When wheel is binding, or wheninterrupting a cut for any reason, slowlyease the wheel out of the material whilemaintaining a firm grip on the tool andauxiliary handle with both hands.Investigate and take corrective action toeliminate the cause of wheel binding. When restarting a tool in a workpiece, center the wheel in the kerf and check thatthe sides of the wheel are not engaged intothe material. If wheel is binding, it may walkup or recoil from the workpiece as the tool isrestarted.Support large panels to minimize the risk ofwheel pinching and recoil. Large panels tendto sag under their own weight. Supports mustbe placed under the panel on both sides, nearthe line of cut and near the edge of the panel.Use extra caution when making a “PocketCut” into existing walls or other blindareas. The protruding wheel may cut objectsthat can cause recoil.

Jigsaw Handle Attachment Safety RulesDo not use any router bitwith a cutting diameter larger

than 1/4" with the Jigsaw Handle Attachment. When using a 1/4" shank bitor any router bit with the

Jigsaw Handle Attachment, the collet nutmust be tightened using the supplied wrench.Finger tight is not sufficient for router bits.

Indicate direction of rotationof the bit. When viewing

from above, DOR is CW. When viewed fromthe end of the bit, DOR is CCW.

Before doing any work withthe Jig Saw Attachment,

tighten the depth adjust screw tightly.

INSTALLING BITSThe bits are held by a collet system. Use eitherthe 1/8" (.125"), 1/4" (.250") or 5/32" (.156")collet depending on the size of the bit shank.

The bit flutes are sharp andshould be handled with

caution.Depress and hold the shaft-lock in and rotatethe collet nut and shaft until the shaft-lockengages and holds the shaft.

To prevent damage to tool.Never use the shaft lock as a

braking devise to stop the tool from rotating.Use the standard equipment wrench toloosen nut (counter-clockwise) (Fig. 2).Remove the old bit (if there is one) insert thenew bit as far in as possible, but not so farthat the bit flutes engage the collet (leave

approximately 1/8" of shank exposed)Re-engage the shaft-lock and tighten the nut(clockwise) by hand and then with thewrench until bit is held securely.

CHANGING THE COLLETThe 1/8" collet is used with 1/8" diameterbits, the 1/4" collet is used with 1/4" diameterbits and the 5/32" collet is used with 5/32"diameter bits. To change collets, f irstremove the bit. Continue to loosen andunscrew the collet nut until you can remove itfrom the tool. Remove the collet and replaceit with the other (Fig. 3). (Each collet isdouble-ended, and either end is acceptableto use.) By hand, re-tighten the collet nutaround the collet in a clockwise direction. You are now ready to insert a new bit asinstructed in Installing Bits (Fig. 2).

After assembling the bit into the tool asdescribed earlier, it will be necessary to reviewthe instructions provided below and make somepractice cut-outs with this tool before attemptingan actual job. The best method is to take somescrap pieces and nail or screw them in placeover wall studs which have an electrical box orother feature in place. A few such exercises willgive you the necessary practice to make clean, professional cutouts around whatever is behindthe drywall you are installing.

Do not attempt to use thistool to make cut-outs

around any fixture or opening which haslive electrical wires, or on any wall whichmay have live electrical wiring behind it, asthe bit could conduct current to the tool, creating an electrocution hazard for theoperator. Shut off breakers or remove fuses todisconnect the circuit. Always hold the tool byits thermoplastic housing, and always weareye protection when operating this device.

! WARNING

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREATING CUT-OUTS IN DRyWALLFOR OUTLETS, CAN LIGHTS, WINDOWS, AND DOORS

MAKE A FEW PRACTICE CUTSAfter installing the bit into the tool andadjusting your depth guide, you should makea few practice cuts with the tool beforeattempting an actual job. A few exercises willgive you the necessary practice to makeclean, professional cuts.Step 1: Make certain that the collet nut issecurely tightened before turning the tool on.Step 2: Hold the tool firmly and turn the toolON to your desired speed.Step 3: While holding the tool firmly, insert thebit into the material at a 45° angle (Fig. 9).Step 4: Slowly bring it to a 90° angle to beginthe cut (Fig. 10). The base guide should beflush to the material surface. For all materials(EXCEPT cutting around outlet boxes indrywall), steer the tool in a clockwise directionwith slow, steady pressure to make the cut.Step 5: After completing your cut, turn off thetool and carefully remove it from the material.Do not attempt to use this tool to make cutoutsaround any fixture or opening which has liveelectrical wires, or any wall which may havelive electrical wiring behind it, as the bit couldconduct current to the tool, creating anelectrocution hazard for the operator. Shut offbreakers or remove fuses to disconnect thecircuit. Always hold the tool by itsthermoplastic housing, and always wear eyeprotection when operating a Spiral Saw powertool.NOTE: Because of the rotating cutting actionof the bit, there will be a slight pull when

cutting. The slower you cut, the more controlyou have. Excessive pressure or fast cuttingwill cause excessive heat and may shortenthe life of the bit.NOTE: When cutting on a vertical surface, avoid ending your cut at the bottom of thehole. If possible, start and end your cut at thetop so the scrap part will not drop onto therotating bit. Turn the tool off and remove itfrom the material.

Page 14: Operating/Safety Instructions RZ1500 RZ2000

Step 1: Be certain that the box or fixture isfirmly mounted and all wires or otherobstructions around the opening are pushedback out of the way. The bit uses the outeredge of the box or fixture as a guide, so it isimportant that there is nothing in the waywhich can prevent it from guiding completelyaround the opening. For the purposes of thisinstruction manual, the procedure discussedwill be to make a cut-out around a standard 21/8" x 3 3/4" electrical box.Step 2: Slide switch to turn the tool on. Whileholding the Sprial Saw® firmly with bothhands, plunge the bit through the mark youmade. Then guide the bit to the right until youfeel and hear the bit touch the inside edge ofthe box (Fig. 11).Step 3: Pull the bit out far enough to slip itover the edge of the box so it is now againstthe outside of the box (Fig. 12).Step 4: While keeping the bit in contact withthe outside of the box move the tool counterclockwise while applying light inward andupward pressure until you feel and hear itcome to the corner. As you round the cornerapply light pressure left and downward (Fig. 12).Step 5: While moving slowly and continuouslyalong the top contour you will feel the bit cometo the next corner. Round the corner andapply light down and inward pressure until thebottom corner is reached (Fig. 12).Step 6: Move the bit right and upwardmaintaining light continuous pressure towardthe box (Fig. 12).Step 7: Round the right bottom corner andbegin moving the bit upward while applyinglight pressure left toward the box until youmeet initial upward cut. Push Sprial Saw®switch to off (Fig. 11).Step 8: The completed box, executed quickly, neatly, and in a fraction of the time taken byother methods.

NOTE: These step-by-step instructions aregeneralized to acquaint you with the SprialSaw’s® operation. After some practice, youmay develop a technique with which you aremore comfortable. However, you must alwaysbegin the cut somewhat centrally, and MOVETHE Sprial Saw® ONLY COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to take advantage of the“hugging” action of the bit along the contoursof the template. Remember to use a smooth, continuous motion. The exception to this ruleapplies to cutting window and door openings.Since you are tracing around the inside of theframing members, move the bit clockwise totake advantage of the bits “hugging” action.

Operating Instructions

MAKING A CUT1. Make sure material being cut is secured ina vise or fixture before attempting to cut.2. Keep your body positioned to either side ofthe wheel, but not in line with wheel. It isimportant to support the tool properly and toposition your body such as to minimize bodyexposure from possible wheel binding andrecoil.3. Grip the tool with both hands when cuttingand always be ready and able to manage thecut.4. Avoid jamming, twisting or pinching thewheel with the workpiece or otherwiseapplying excessive side pressure to the wheel.5. Keep guard covering between wheel anduser.6. Make sure the guard lock lever is in theclosed position and the guard is securelymounted to the attachment. Use the allenwrench to adjust the guard adjustment screw.7. Maximum cutting depth is 3/4”.

Overtightening the guardadjustment screw can

permanently damage the locking mechanism.Test the tightness of the lever after each fullturn of the adjustment screw.

To prevent recoil anddamage to the tool, always

ensure that the inner or outer flanges nevercontacts the workpiece surface.

8. Generally, the harder the material beingworked on, the faster the wheel will wear.9. When cutting thicker material, never makethe cut in one pass. Make successive passesuntil you reach desired depth.ATTENTION: If you run the tool continuouslyfor more than 5 minutes, it is normal for thehousing to feel warm.It is important to read and understand thesection in this manual called “Causes andOperator Prevention of Recoil”.When making a cut in sheet metal, masonry, etc.: You may start your cut at the end of thepiece or you can plunge cut somewhere inthe body of the material. In order to try to avoid recoil (a situation wherethe wheel wants to skip out of the material) itis recommended to make cuts in the samedirection as the rotation of the wheel (Fig. 5).
