What is Optical Fiber?
Optical fiber is basically a wire that is made of glass instead of copper.
Why use Optical Fiber?
Higher speed- 2.5Gb/s vs 1.5 Mb/s Signal strength -200Km vs 2.5 Km Security EMI- (electromagnetic interference) Capacity- 32,000 channels vs 24 channels
Why Optical Fiber?
Fiber Splicing
Mechanical Splicing– Butt fibers together with matching gel in between
fibers.– Requires high skill level – High splice loss (0.5 dB)– Degradation over time (2-5years)
Fiber Splicing
Fusion Splicing– Low splice loss– Long lasting– Durable

Process Management
In early versions process management was not very critical because of basic structure of system.
Recently as new OS was launched noticeable problem has been response time.
Process Management
Memory management
Due to small size of OS this was not an issue When PM splicer was introduced, previous
machine version was upgraded causing memory to be full.
To remedy problem, several options had to be removed.
Storage management
Storing of data is different than computer– Each compartment for storing data is fixed– Program storage, splice history, arc check history
and images can only be stored in fixed location with a fixed size.
Protection
Protection is needed so that user cannot modify certain aspects of the splicer
User menu and Supervisor menu
Security
To protect from unauthorized users. To protect if machine is stolen.
