Unlike standard coffee machines, thismachine has a container for coffeebeans so that they can be freshlyground for every cup, to benefit fullyfrom the flavour.

First the ground coffee is moistenedwith hot water (pre-brewing), todevelop the aroma. Next, hot water isforced at high pressure through theground coffee. The pre-brewingprocess is optional.

To prevent water from remaining in thepipes, any water left is expelled, resulting in a little trickle after the coffeehas been dispensed. The coffee is thenready.

The used coffee grounds areautomatically emptied into the wasteunit. There is no need to remove thegrounds manually after each cup.

The size of cup (max. 250 ml) can beprogrammed in so that the correctamount of coffee is dispensed. If thecup being used has a smaller capacitythan the programmed cup size, preparation can be halted at any timeby pressing one of the coffee portionbuttons.

If two cups of coffee or espresso arerequired at the same time, theappropriate coffee portion button mustbe pressed twice. The machine will fillthe cups in two stages with a slightpause in between.

The machine can be programmed togrind from 6 to 9 grammes of coffee, depending on the type. Theprogrammed-in quantity will be thesame for all sizes of cup(small/espresso, medium coffee, largecoffee). Only the amount of water willchange.

The fineness to which the coffee isground can also be programmed in.

The hot water from the hot water spoutis at an ideal temperature for makingtea.

The light can be switched onindependently of operation.

In the interests of safety, the electricitysupply is switched off as soon as thefront of the machine is opened. There isalso a system lock to prevent childrenfrom operating the machine.

The easy to use programming facilityallows, amongst other things, thelanguage in the display to be altered, and the water hardness to beprogrammed in.

Setting the water hardnessFor trouble-free operation of the coffee machine, and to ensure that the descaling reminder appearsin the display at the appropriate time, it is importantto programme in the water hardness. The waterhardness indicates how much calcium is dissolvedin the water. The higher the calcium content, theharder the water is.

The machine monitors the volume of water passingthrough it in conjunction with the hardness of thewater. Less hard water can be allowed to passthrough before descaling than soft water.

The local water authority will be able to tell you thehardness of water in your area. Alternatively, youcan measure the hardness yourself using theenclosed test strip:

Programming the machine

17

Page 18: Operating instructions - Kávégép Boltkavegepbolt.hu/shop_ordered/9160/pic/Saeco/CVA620.pdfBuilt-in automatic coffee machine ... After Sales Service ... operation and care of the

^ Dip the strip in your drinking water forapproximately a second, then shake off anyexcess water.

The results will be evident after about 1 minute.

If the water is harder than 7.0 mmol/l or 700 mg/l(40 °d), limescale will build up more rapidy thanwith soft water. Descaling will need to be carriedout more regularly than stated to preventlimescale damage to the machine.

Use programming option "Water hardness" toprogramme in the water hardness.

There are four programmable levels:

Level(machine)

Hardness(local water)

Important: the water piping must be rinsedthrough and the machine cleaned thoroughlybefore the first drink of coffee is prepared. Usethe rinse button for this, (see "Cleaning andcare"), and then prepare hot water afterwards,(see "Preparing drinks").

The flavour of the coffee produced depends on thetype of coffee, how finely the beans are ground andthe quantity of water used. Espresso, coffee and teacups vary in size. To ensure the machine usesexactly the amount of water to suit your taste andyour cups, there is a choice of four different portionsizes:three portion sizes for espresso/coffee (max. 250 ml)and one for tea (max. 300 ml).

The coffee portion buttons are designed for thefollowing types of coffee:

The small/espresso button a dispenses a standardsize espresso to be served in a standard espressocup.

The medium coffee button b dispenses coffee fora standard size coffee cup. It uses the samequantity of ground coffee as an espresso, but addsmore water.

The large coffee button c dispenses a largecoffee, suitable for a large coffee cup or mug.Again, only the volume of water is increased, resulting in a milder flavour.

The volume of water dispensed by each button canbe altered to suit your needs.

CappuccinoTo make cappuccino you need a china or porcelaincup, a large container such as a milk jug and milk.

Cold, low-fat milk (1.5% fat) is best forcreating froth and ideally it should beprepared in a cold, stainless steel jug

that narrows towards the top.

^ Half fill the jug/container with cold milk anddispense a portion of espresso into a china cup.

The volume of the milk in the jug will double ortriple when frothed. If the jug is too full to startwith, the milk could overflow, leading to a risk ofscalding.

^ Direct the steam spout towards the drip tray andslowly turn the steam control dial anti-clockwise.

Any condensed water in the spout will beexpelled.

A good espresso with a thick, even froth dependsnot only on the quality, pressure and temperature ofthe water and the quality of the coffee beans, butalso on the quantity of beans and how finely they areground.

The froth should have an even colour with darkstripes running through it.

Grinding the coffee

To avoid damage to the machine, the slidecontrol for the coffee grinder setting should bemoved carefully and in small stages.

There are various ways to tell whether the coffeegrinder is set correctly:

– If espresso flows too quickly into the cup, itmeans that the coffee has been ground toocoarsely and the pressure is not sufficient. Thegrinder should be set on a finer setting.

– If espresso only trickles into the cup, the coffeebeans have been ground too finely and the coffeewill be bitter. The grinder should be set on acoarser setting.

– If the froth is evenly coloured but pale, this is alsoa sign that the coffee beans have been groundtoo coarsely.

– If the froth is very dark brown on one side, graduating almost to white on the other, itsuggests that coffee beans have been ground toofinely.

Page 44: Operating instructions - Kávégép Boltkavegepbolt.hu/shop_ordered/9160/pic/Saeco/CVA620.pdfBuilt-in automatic coffee machine ... After Sales Service ... operation and care of the

To alter the grinder setting

^ push the upper slide control to the left (for finergrinding) or to the right (for coarser grinding).

You should be able to feel the notches clearlywhen moving the slide control.

If the slide refuses to move,

^ close the machine and dispense a cup ofespresso coffee.

Then try the slide control again.

Setting the quantityBoth the flavour and the froth on the coffee dependon the quantity of ground coffee used.

6 to 9 grammes of coffee beans are used per cup, depending on the type of coffee. The greater thequantity, the stronger the flavour will be.

The quality of the froth is also affected by thequantity:

– If the froth is evenly coloured but pale, it couldmeans that too little coffee is being used.

– If the froth is very dark brown on one side, graduating almost to white on the other, it couldmean that too much coffee is being used.

To alter the amount of coffee to be ground,

^ push the lower slide control to the left (to grindless coffee) or to the right (to grind more coffee).

N.B.: To ensure the machine functions correctly, itis essential that you maintain and clean it asinstructed in these operating instructions and inthe video supplied with your machine using thecleaning/descaling agents supplied by Miele.

Failure to do so can result in poor quality coffee, bacterial contamination and in extreme casescan lead to malfunction of the machine.

Danger - always allow the machine to cool downbefore cleaning. Danger of scalding.

Do not clean the machine with a steam cleaner toavoid the risk of damage to the machine.

Never use cleaners containing chlorides, sand, soda or scouring agents. These would damagethe surface.

It is important to clean the machine regularly, as theused coffee grounds will soon go mouldy.

With the exception of the brew unit and the watercontainer all removable accessories are dishwasherproof. Please be aware that discolouration canoccur to plastic components if they are washed inthe dishwasher frequently. This is caused bycolourants in foods like tomato sauce. Thediscolouration is no cause for concern.

Espresso lungo is the larger, lessconcentrated version served in astandard coffee cup.

Espresso ristretto is a doublestrength, bitter tasting espresso.

Grinding - the success of the espressodepends on how coarse or fine thecoffee beans are ground. If the groundsare too coarse, the water flows throughtoo quickly and does not createsufficient pressure to release thearoma. If the grounds are too fine, ithinders the flow of water, so thepreparation time is too long and theespresso will taste bitter. In a humidatmosphere the beans swell more, sothey should be ground more finely. However, there are no hard and fastrules about grinding the coffee.

Macchiato is espresso with a tiny shotof hot, frothed milk which gives it adappled (macchiato) appearance.

Pressure is important as it releases thesuspended particles in the coffee whichgive it its aroma. If the pressure is toolow, the aroma cannot develop fully. If itis too high, it releases tannin and abitter flavour. Pressure is also importantfor creating the Crema.

Pre-warming the cups is to berecommended to prevent the espressofrom cooling too quickly.

Quantity - the quantity of ground coffeeused for each cup can be set between6 and 9g per cup, depending on taste.Generally 6 to 7g are used for a cup ofespresso, but there are no absoluterules

Robusta is a cheaper coffee bean. It isround and convex with an almoststraight groove. The caffeine content isaround 2 to 2.5%. It is more bitter thanthe Arabica bean.

Roasting is very important for theflavour and caffeine content of theespresso. Roasting releases theethereal oils which create the aromaand flavour. Roasting releases theflavour but burns off the caffeine. Thestronger the roast, the less caffeine theespresso will contain. Lightly roastedbeans have an acid flavour, darkroasted beans taste more bitter.

Storage - coffee is best kept in therefrigerator to preserve its aroma.
