Dear Customer!

Thank you for your decision to use the Digital Video Sensor VMD-4 in your application. We ask you to read thoroughly through the brief instructions, so that you can use the VMD-4 functions in an optimum way for your system. Before installing the equipment, please read the safety instructions on page 39. Check the included accessories for completeness: • 1 x 9 pin D-SUB null modem cable • 1 x plug-in power supply 9 VDC or 12 VDC, 800mA • 2 x mounting brackets with screws for mounting in a 19“ rack • 1 x 25 pin D-SUB soldering plug with cover and mounting hardware • 1 x 9pin D-SUB soldering plug with cover and mounting hardware • 1 x CD-ROM with installation software • 4 x self-adhesive equipment feet Please contact your dealer directly, if any of the accessories should be missing!

1.0 Installation

1.1 PC Setup Dialog The PC setup program for the VMD-4 video sensor uses the Windows 95/98 or Win-dows 2000 operating system. The screen resolution should be set to at least 800 × 600 and the number of colors should be set to True Color. To install the program from the included CD-ROM, run Setup.exe in the “VMD4” folder. Follow the program instructions and install the VMD-4 setup in the desired folder. After the installation has been completed, start the program VMD4 via the standard Windows menu Start 4Program Files 4VMD4. The setup program for the VMD-4 will be executed. The program can be uninstalled via the Windows 95/98 control panel menu “Software”. 1.2 VMD-4 Please connect the video signal of the video cameras to the BNC inputs 1 through 4 and connect the outputs to the monitors, camera switches, etc. After connecting the power supply, the green symbol “Power LED” lights up and the video picture briefly shows “VMD-4 –insert”. 3-5 seconds after this display, the sensor is initialized and ready for operation. To configure the VMD-4, connect the RS232 interface of the sensor to a serial port (COM1 through COM4) of a PC or a laptop. Use the included null modem cable for that purpose. After starting the PC setup program, you can setup the VMD-4.

4.0 Brief Description

VMD-4 is a digital video sensor for simultaneous monitoring of four camera sig-nals (channels) for indoor and outdoor applications. The sensor is also capable of detecting video picture changes under difficult light conditions. The PC setupprogram interface of the VMD-4 allows comfortable setting of all sensor parameters. First, the respective camera picture has to be transmitt from VMD-4 to the PC and displayed in a window. The VMD-4 is equipped with four time zone for each camera: The number of setup parameters is multiplied by four when using all time zones. Using the PCs mouse you can now define four sensor areas per channel accord-ing to the local conditions. For each sensor area there are extensive setting possibilities such as number of sensor cells, sensitivity, Auto Reset. With the new version (Version 3.xx or higher) you can use an Object recognition on the red area in combination with a perspektive analysis. Having programmed all setup-parameters, these are transferred from the PC to the VMD-4. The sensor now operates with the new parameters independently from the PC. The setup data can also be stored on hard disk/diskette. Thus it is possible to transfer standardized settings without great effort to several sensors. In case of failure, the service engineer can determine whether the setup has been changed by unauthorized persons and he can directly reestablish the origi-nal configuration. The camera pictures including the defined sensor areas can be stored in bitmap format for documentation purposes. VMD-4 uses state-of-the-art Flash technology: Upgrading the operating software (firmware) can be performed without opening the equipment, upgrades can be loaded via PC or laptop via the RS232 interface. In the following sections the setup functions, the individual sensor parameters and their settings are briefly described. The diagram on the following page shows an overview of the parameters that can be configured in the menu.

The chart on the previous page shows, that the different functions of the VMD-4 are linked to the spheres of channel, time zone and area. These three spheres have the following hierarchical structure: Channel ºº Time Zone ºº Area. Each of the channels has four time zones, each with four sensor areas. Therefore all parameters assigned to a channel are valid for all subordinate time zones and the corresponding sensor areas, too. In the next chapter the structure of the PC dialog and the function of all parameters are described.

6.0 PC Dialog After starting the program, the main window appears on the monitor. All important setup parameters of the VMD-4 can be directly adjusted in this window.

Standard settings (default values) are defined for all four camera channels. All “switches” and input fields feature help texts, so that the user can quickly become acquainted with the setup procedures. The following pages describe the individual setup functions:

6.1 Menu Menu bar: Includes the functions of the symbol bar and additional settings that are explained in the following. Symbol bar: Provides direct access to all important functions. Save file: The entire setup configuration of all camera channels including the picture data can be saved in a file. Open file: Loads a setup configuration previously stored on harddisk or diskette. This allows, for example, programming the sensors with standardized settings. Load setup/picture data: Opens a window for controlling the data transfer from VMD-4 to the PC.

• Load picture: Use the picture selection buttons to select the picture/channel that

has to be transferred. Selecting the red “A” button transfers all four camera pic-tures sequentially. The data transfer is started with the “Picture” button. This pro-cess takes about 20 seconds per picture: After the connection to the VMD-4 has been established, the “Connect” symbol shows a red light and the status line shows a message concerning the data transfer. If the connection has been successfully established, a progress indicator bar shows the progress of the data transfer. When the transfer has been completed, the dialog box is automatically closed.

• Picture compression: Allows a fast picture transmission by using the half reso-lution. It is recommended for a remote maintenance via modem / NNI.

• Load setup: Load the setup configuration of all four channels of the VMD-4. The data transmission is performed as described in “Load Picture”. In case of errors during data transmission the status line displays error messages: If, for example, the connection cannot be established (connect symbol stays green), the settings of the serial interface must be checked. If an error occurs during data transmission, the process must be repeated. Data transmission PC ºº Sensor: Opens a dialog box for controlling the transfer of setup data from PC to the unit. • Send setup: Programs the sensor with the parameters that have been

configured in the PC setup. This irrevocably overwrites the setup data in the VMD-4. The data transmission is performed as described in “Load Picture”.

• Send Date / Time: Date and time are transferred seperately in order to synchro-

nosize the internal clock of the VMD-4 with the system clock of the PC. NOTES: An automatic switch between summer and winter time can be activated under ‘Settings’. If this function is activated ( the ‘sun’ symbol appears pressed ) on last Sunday of March (begin of summertime) at 02.00 the clock will be set to 03.00 automatically. The reset (3.00 º 2.00) will be executed on the last Sunday of October.

Clicking “OK” accepts the

changes and stores the new setup to the PC local harddisk. Change password: The setup data is protected from unauthorized access by a password. A data trans-mission can only be executed successfully if the password of VMD-4 and PC program are the same It is recommended to alter the password immediately after the first start of the setup program.

NOTE: The password can only be changed when the sensor is connected to the PC interface. When an error message appears immediately after the call up, please check the settings of RS232 and the interface cable!

The password can be changed in the following dialog box:

The password has a maximum length of 6 characters and is case-sensitive! • Old: Enter the current password of the VMD-4.

The pre-configured password is “norma”. • New: Enter the new password. • Confirm: Repeat and verify the new password.

Important ! : Each password entry on Old / New / Confirm has to be completed by the Enter-key !!! The new password is accepted by clicking “OK”. Attention: When the password has been lost, the PC setup program has to be uninstalled and then installed again.

Copy Area Parameter:

This option allows the copying of one sensor area to another area within the same channel, regardless of the time zone. Therefore the user does not have to program the whole setup anew if the parameters of the sensor areas only differ marginally. On Screen Display: Camera texts and alarm reports as well as date and time can be displayed for each channel. The text can be directly entered to the text field. The pull-down buttons on the right hand allow a free positioning of the displays in the picture (within the range of 12 lines and 24 rows). With the help of a check box these texts, as well as time and date, can be deactivated. In this case there is no display in the camera picture. Activated alarm texts appear only while the alarm of the corresponding camera is trig-gered and the relay is energized (see also ‚Alarm Relay‘).

Alarm- / Sabotage settings: Allows the configuration of special relay functions and the entry of a character string (alarm string) that is transmitted via the RS232 interface of the VMD-4 to peripheral de-vices, for example, camera toggle switch or recording systems, when a sensor is trig-gered. The alarm strings are defined by means of the following dialog box: • RS232 parameters: The RS232 interface standard parameters of the VMD-4 are

configured for the transmission between PC and sensor (see also page 13). The interface parameters can be toggled for transmitting data strings to devices with different interface configurations. When an alarm is triggered, the sensor interface automatically switches to the pa-rameters that have been configured in this menu. After transmitting the alarm string, the VMD-4 automatically restores the original interface parameters (VMD-4 ↔ PC).

• Relay functions: In factory configuration of the VMD-4 the alarms of channel 1–4

are output to relays 1–4. In this dialog box the relay functions for common alarm and sabotage can be as-signed:

Common relay All alarms are output via a common relay (1–4). This corresponds to a logical OR function of all alarm relays. The function of the other relays is not affected and can still be used – as defined in the factory configuration.

Sabotage The event ‘sabotage’ of the activated channels 1-4 can be sent to a common relay (1–4). The functions of the other relays are not affected. When the parameter ‘in-verted’ is active the relay contact is normally closed (NC) in order to recognize a power failure of the unit. Note: The conditions of “Common relay” and “Video fail” are not indicated at the front side LEDs.

• Sabotage:

A sabotage alarm can be indicated by - Energizing the sabotage relay ( global definition; see above) and / or - Sending a serial sabotage string (definition for each channel as described in

‘RS232 Strings’ ). The relay is energized as long as the sabotage is detected ( no manual reset ). The transmission of the serial string starts with detecting a sabotage and – setting ‘repeat’ is activated – each second anew. Up to 3 different kinds of sabotage detections can be defined for each of the four channels: Video fail When a video signal fails – channel is activated (see Camera Tool Bar), no video signal has been applied to the input – the LED of the corresponding channel flashes on the front side of the device. Videosignallevel When this function is activated an arithmetic reference value ( for all picture inten-sities within all four areas) over 5 minutes will be calculated in order to take ac-count of slow illuminance alteration, like twilight, common changing of weather conditions. At the same time a arithmetic mean is registered over a short time of 10 seconds. Intensity changes by moving objects effects no alarm. Durable changes like cover-ing of the camera objective or a lasting local variation in the camera picture causes a sabotage alarm. In this case after 5-10 seconds an alarm is occured. The alarm threshold can be adjusted in 9 steps. In case of outdoor areas (short-term intensity changes by sun or clouds) it is recommended to set the treshold to higher signaldeviation. Signalcharacteristic By activating of this function a reference value will be initiated, however as an av-erage difference of the arithmetic mean. The calculation is done for the distribution of all intensities within the camera picture. This feature is especially recommended for high-contrast images, because sabotage by paint-spraying to the camera ob-jective or distorting of the camera-view effects a bad-focused and low-contrast im-age in the most cases. The reference value is adapted dynamicaly. The notes for alarm activating and the alarm threshold is performed as described in ‘Videosig-nallevel’.

Important: For configurating and testing the sabotage settings of videosignallevel and/or sig-nalcharacteristic a status information appears on the right side of the time display: „w“:Sabotage surveillance is active, but not operable.

Note: After PC-configuration, reset or changing of a timezone the reference value is stabilized after about 90 seconds and the sabotage and the sabo-tage surveillance is operable.

„í“: Sabotage surveillance is active and operable. „(“: Sabotage surveillance is active and a sabotage is recognized.

• RS232 Strings: Alarm strings can be defined for each of the four sensor areas of a camera channel. The channel area is selected with the camera- and area-buttons; in the example shown below sensor area 1 (red) of channel 1. Each sen-sor area can transmit two data strings via RS232 (Alarm ON, string 1 + 2). After Auto Reset time (see also page 27) has expired, the Alarm OFF strings are sent. Thus the peripheral devices connected can be controlled differently for alarm acti-vation and expiration of the Auto Reset time. Example: A PT-head is moved to position xx for an alarm and after the expiration of the Auto Reset time, it moves back to its home position. The maximum string length is 20 characters. The characters are input in hexa-decimal notation, i. e. only characters from 0…9 and A…F are allowed. This type of character-coding allows transmission of any text and control com-mands. The following example shows a character string that has been defined for sending an alarm text via RS232:

Area Matrix: Each sensor area can be logically linked with up to four other areas. This results in a higher switch security and ensures that movement directions in the camera picture and temporal sequences are detected.

First the area to be defined is selected with the time zone-, channel- and area- buttons and appears in the field (in the configuration shown on the left: area 2 -green- of time zone 1, channel 1). All edit fields, who stands among one another are together with the to defined area AND connected and constitute a term. On the right side more terms can be constituted. If the conditions of one or more terms are true, the defined area is triggered.

The maximum number of entries is 4 areas. Entries without a definiton of the edit field above or more than 4 entries are not valid. The checkbox on the right hand of the edit field defines the condition ‚area is triggered‘ (R), or ‚area is not triggered‘ (£). In the example above the green area is only triggered, - if the red area is triggered too , or - if the yellow area is triggered too and the blue area is not triggered. Remote maintenance: Starting with PC Setup V 2.0 and Master Firmware V 2.0 (see also Release) remote maintenance of the VMD-4 is possible, i. e. all setup parameters, picture data, and the firmware can be configured via an existing ISDN telephone network. For this purpose you must connect and program ISDN modems at the transmitter side (VMD-4) and receiver side (PC or laptop). • Settings:

The following settings refer to the connection of an external ELSA TanGo ISDN modem and an internal Teles PCMCIA card. The B channel protocol used is X.75. Note: For other brand modems the AT command listed below can be different.

Transmitter-side ELSA TanGo:

Modem initialization: AT &F S0=1 &D0 \Q0 &W &W1 Saving the configuration with &W&W1 causes the desired parameters to be loaded after switching on or resetting the modem.

The external modem can be programmed via a terminal program or directly via the VMD-4 PC setup. For this purpose, use menu Connection via Modem in the software:

Connect the exter-nal modem to the selected PC or lap-top interface (COM menu) and enter the AT commands, for example AT&FS0=1&D0\Q0&W&W1 for the ELSA TanGo.

After clicking the test button the modem’s response is displayed in the status line. If the modem does not answer, check the selected interface as well as the interface cable. If the modem answers with “ERROR”, there is an error in the initialization string. If the modem answers with “OK”, you can connect the modem to the interface of the VMD-4. The transmitting side is now ready for operation. NOTE: In order to remote-configure the VMD-4, the baud rate of the PC interface must be set to 57,600 baud (see COM menu). This is the baud rate that is automatically set for an existing connection by the modem at the transmitter side.

• Establishing a connection: - Enter the AT commands for the modem of the PC in the “Modem init” field and test

the function (modem must answer with “OK”). - Enter the dial command in the “Dial prefix” field, in this case ATD for “dial”. This

command is sent directly before the telephone number. - In the telephone directory, select the transmitting station you want to call.

If there are no entries or if you want to change the number,

select the desired field and click “Change”. An entry field is displayed and you can enter or change

name and telephone number of the station.

- The selected telephone number is now displayed in the entry field above the con-nect button. Here you can also edit the number, if no number from the telephone directory is to be used.

- When clicking the connect button, the modem tries to establish a connection to the transmitter and the corresponding connect message is displayed in the status line. After about 3 seconds the remote maintenance dialog is closed. At the bottom of the main window a note is displayed that a remote connection to the transmitter has been established.

- If no connection can be established or the connection is broken, a corresponding message is displayed. In this case you must check the telephone number and/or the modem parameters.

Note: If a connection is active for a longer period of time, a note is displayed every 10 minutes and you will be asked whether the existing connection is to be main-tained or broken. If you do not respond to this message, the program will terminate the connection.

• Termination of connection: - Main window:

Filter Functions: The VMD-4 can prevent weather-dependent false alarms of the sensor and can detect movements regarding direction and speed:

Each channel can be configured with two filter functions. • Noise filter:

Defines the suppresion of noise- and fail-influences against to the detecting ob-jects. The function can be set in three steps: Low: e.G.: Camera noise for dim light conditions. The minimum size of the detecting objects has to be two contiguous cells. Middle: e.G.: Weather influences due to snow / heavy rain. The minimum size of the detecting objects has to be four cells, formed as square. High: e.G.: Influences due to insects in front of the lense / heavy snowfall. The size of the object should be at least 9 cells, arranged as square.

• Trace function:

Objects moving continuously in one direction within an area leave a “trace” of trig-gered cells. On the other hand, objects that do not move in one direction such as a tree in the wind only cause a limited number of triggered cells around the object. By selecting a suitable trace (light, middle, intense) and a minimum number of triggered cells (see Min), continuous movement in one direction can be unambigu-ously identified. Important: In the object mode the trace setting defines how long the object is tracked by the sensor until the object triggers an alarm: Setting ,off’ : immediately; ,short’: <1sec. up to ,long’: > 2 sec.

For each channel the red and green area can be configured with up to two simultane-ous direction filter functions: • Direction filter:

Configuring eight possible direction preferences, it triggers only those cells that are sequentially changed in the selected direction. Movement in the opposite direction will not trigger any cells.

Time zone definition: Each channel of the VMD-4 is equipped with a total of four time zones. Different sen-sor areas can be placed for each of these zones. Therefore four completely independ-ent day and week programs are editable for each channel.

First the zone to be defined is selected with the camera- and timezone-buttons: The timezone 1 is always displayed in the upper half, one of timezone 2-4 in the lower half of the window. With a mouse click or Drag & Draw (drag the mouse by pressed left button) you can define the active time for timezone 1 (shown as red blocks). In the left image there is an example for dif-ferent shopping times. All the periodes of the closed store are registered in time-zone 2 as shown below.. The blue blocks indicate an inactive time area. Time ar-reas that are overlapped by two or more timezones ae colored yellow.

The priority within the four time zones is defined as going down from zone 1 to zone 4. Example: If zone 1 and zone 3 overlap, only zone 1 is active. If you only need to work with one time zone than there is no need to program all zones: Marking the hole area (Monday...Sunday , 00:00...24:00 o‘clock) for timezone 1 acti-vates the system for the whole week, 24 hours a day. Note: A sensor channel is disabled if not one of the 4 timezones is active. In this case a flashing minus-character (instead of a colon) appears on the monitor output between the hour- and minute time display . The VMD-4 is equipped with an integrated input for a twilight switch: If the switch is activated ( see twilight contact in channel-setup menu; a red attention-note appears on the right edge above) the sensor automatically switches – in case the contact is closed – between the timezones as follows: When the contact is closed, the unit regards - in according to the time definition – only the settings of timezone 2 or 4. On the other hand (contact is open) only the parame-ters of zone 1 or 3 are possible. Example: A day- and nightprogram has to be defined for Monday to friday respectively saturday and sunday each. For that purpose the hole time area from monday to friday is activated in zone 1 + 2, the same area of saturday and sunday in zone 3 +4. This results that mo.-fr. the unit is defined by timezone 1 during the day, in the night by the settings of zone 2. On the weekend (saturday, sunday) the sensor switches between timezone 3 (during the day) and timezone 4 (night).

Info: Displays information about the current program version. Service functions: • Firmware / Release:

Opens a dialog box for programming the operating software (firmware). The sensor is Flash-programmable. This means that the firmware can be transferred to the processors by a PC. Changing EPROMs and thus opening the device is not required. When the firmware is changed, for example during a functional upgrade or with special software, the firm-ware is loaded to the VMD-4 via this dialog box. The sensor is equipped with 7 flash memories: Master, main, channel 1-4 and interface (option).

By clicking the corresponding button, the Windows “Open File” dialog box is opened and you can select the file (*.bin) to be programmed. Subsequently, the transfer to the VMD-4 is done and a percent display indicates the progress of the process. After successful transfer, the message “Programmed” is displayed on the right hand of the button. In case of errors during data transmission the status line at the bottom displays corresponding error messages.

On the “Release” tab a tabular overview documents the firmware version and the date of each last pro-gramming action. By pressing the ‘release’ button the current data of the VMD-4 is displayed. An overview of the current releases is shown on Ap-pendix (page 38).

• Reset: Restores the default values (restart) of the PC user interface. ATTENTION: A reset overwrites all current setup settings of the user interface with default values.

• Test: Includes test routines for programming and checking the sensor by a specialist. ATTENTION: This test must only be executed after consulting your local dealer! Executing this routine can delete all settings and the software of the sensor!

6.2 Camera Tool Bar:

• Channel switch:

Switches between setup settings of camera 1…4.

• Time zone: Each channel is equipped with a total of four time zones. The time zone to be con-figured is selected with this button.

• Area switch: To be able to distinguish the sensor areas from each other:

red = Sensor area 1 green = Sensor area 2 blue = Sensor area 3 yellow = Sensor area 4

In the example shown above, the setup parameters refer to sensor area 1 of cam-era channel 1.

• Channel settings: Displays an overview of all channel parameters (see description on page 30).

• Sensor switch: Using two or more sensors via NNI-network you can switch between the units. Note: Please save your configuration in a file before selecting the sensor.

6.3 Editor: The editor area with the camera picture of the corresponding channel is divided into 1024 parts, called cells:

Each of these cells can be high-lighted with the left mouse button. It is depicted in the colour of the selected sensor area. The sensor area is defined by all high-lighted blocks of one colour. It is not necessary that all blocks are adjacent to each other. The editor tool bar provides several functions for the editor display and for positioning the individual cells.

• Set all cells:

Activates all cells from the current sensor area. • Delete current area:

Deletes all cells from the current sensor area. • Show / hide area: Switches between the camera image with or without displayed

area in order to check the right overlaying of picture and cells. • Show areas 1...4: For easier positioning of the sensor areas it is possible to dis-

play all areas in the editor. The area that has been selected in the camera tool bar (see above) is edited.

• Set cells:

This function allows exact editing of individual cells within the selected sensor area: The mouse cursor is positioned in the editor and by clicking the left mouse button the cells of the sensor area are activated. When you drag the mouse with the mouse button pressed, the respective cell the cursor is pointing to is activated.

Deleting cells is performed according to the same principle: The mouse cursor is positioned on an activated cell and by clicking the left mouse button the cell turns black and is deactivated. Dragging the mouse with the mouse button pressed, de-activates the cells the cursor is pointing to.

• Set area:

If a larger area of the sensor area is to be activated or de-activated, this area can be marked with the mouse. Position the cursor in the editor, press the left mouse but-ton and draw a frame around the desired cells by dragging the mouse. Depending on the sensor area selected, the rectangle is shown red or green, respectively black when the area is deactivated.

The corresponding function is executed on the marked area, after releasing the left mouse button.

• Define Polygon:

The drawing of a polygon allows a quick area definition : By pressing the left mouse button you define the edges of the polygon. If you have keep pressed the left mouse button for 2 seconds: All cells inside of the polygon turn red and are activated.

6.4 Area parameter I 6.4.1 Area mode

Every sensor area has parameters that can be edited independ-ently from the other areas in this dialog box. A selection of funda-mental parameters ( see also ‚Area parameters II ‘) are shown on the right hand of the edit field:

• Cells: Number of activated cells

• Maximal: A change of the picture is only evaluated as an alarm, if not more than the set cells detect a movement. If more than the set cells detect a movement, the timer “Inactive after exceed volume” (see page 33) is activated. This function prevents triggering for brief changes of the light conditions etc. The desired number of cells is set by means of the slide con-trol. Note: The sensor area is deactivated at the “Max” setting (=0).

• Minimal: The alarm is only triggered if at least the number of set cells detect a change in the sensor area. Thus, too small and therefore irrelevant objects do not cause an alarm. Note: Min=0 is the same as Min=1, which means that at least in one cell a movement has to be detected before the area is triggered.

• Sensitivity: Sets the sensitivity for all marked cells of the sensor area. The higher

the value set, the higher is the sensitivity of the cells. “Sensitivity” defines the trigger’s sensitivity of the time interval (see also ‘Picture memory size’ on page 31).

• Alarm reset: Is started when the sensor area initiates an alarm.

After expiration the alarm of the sensor area is reset. This includes: The display of the area, the internal linking ( see “Area Matrix” on page 17) and the transmission of the serial alarm strings (‘Alarm OFF strings’, see page 17) . IMPORTANT: The alarm relay – if activated – is only reset after expiration of the

relay energizing time set under “Channel settings” respectively after a manual reset.

6.4.2 Object Mode For the red area the detection mode can be configured with object recognition in con-sideration of a perspective (option; definition in „channel settings“). Up to 4 independ-ent objects can be detected within the red area simultaneously. The following illustra-tion shows the object mode without a perspective analysis:

• Objectsize: Number of the cells that are enclosed by the

rectangle in the edit field (in the example on the left side 50). The number is only a information to estimate the ob-ject size. This parameter has no further influence and will not be stored in the sensor unit. The definition of the object size can only be set by Object-maximum/Objectminimum, described next.

• Objektmaximum / Objektminimum: An object within the

red area is only evaluated as an alarm, if the number of de-tected cells is between the objectminimum and object-maximum (in the example between 20 and 150 cells). The maximum value is limited to 255. Exceeding the objectmaximum will not start the timer ‚Inac-tive after exceed volume‘.

• Objekt structure: Objects are represented by a rectangle,

that encloses all detected cells caused by an object. In addtion to the number of detected cells the proportion be-tween the number of cells and the area size of the rectan-gle can be used as a decision parameter.This is more elu-

cidated in the following sketch: A movement of an object has caused the detection of 5 diagonal ar-ranged cells. The contents of the rectangle, that encloses the 5 cells, is 5x5=25. The desired proportion, which is necessary to cause an alarm, can

be set by the slide control from 1% (position LxH) to 99% (position cells).

• Bounding: In the object mode all detected, contiguous cells are combined as one

object; in the sketch the four cells on the left side (Bounding =1). By increasing of ‘Bounding’ to ‚2‘ or ‚3‘ other detected cells will be combined: Bounding of 2: The rectangle now encloses the cell 1, that has a distance of two cells. The content of the rectangle amounts to

3x4 = 12 cells. Bounding of 3: Now cell 2 is an element of the hole object. The area size in-creases up to 5x4 cells. Note: The example shows that by increasing of Bounding the influence of the pa-rameter Objectstructure grows, because the proportion between the detected cells and the area content ( 6 to 20 = 30%) goes down by bounding of 3. (Bounding of 1: proportion is 4 to 6 = 66 % !) .

• Sensitivity / Alarm reset: The entry of these parameters are performed as de-scribed in Area Mode.

Important: By using the Trace-filter parameter (-> Filter functions) all objects, that are moving continuously in one direction for few seconds, will be recognized separately,.

6.4.3 Perspective When the parameters object-mode and perspective are activated (see channel-settings) two rectangles appear on the edit area for defining the position of the fore-ground and the background.

Important: The number for the object size in the foreground / background ( Example of image: foreground 21, background 3) are only an information to estimate the desired object size. The definition of the object size is effected by the parameters Maxi-mum/Minimum on the right hand of the edit area: • Perspective: There are two kinds of perspective-definitions:

Horizontal: An object, that is moving at the same image col-umn, appears smaller in the upper rows (background) than in the lower rows (foreground). This is typical for camera configurations outdoors. Vertical: An object, moving at the same image row, appears smaller (bigger) on the left side than on the right side, for in-stance a camera perspective along a wall.

• Object foreground: An object at the fore position (Defini-

tion: The left, upper edge of the fore rectangle) triggers only an alarm if the number of activated cells is in the range of object minimum and object maximum (In the example be-tween 6 to 50). The same range is valid for objects that are positioned nearer. The value of object maximum is limited to 255. Exceeding the objectmaximum will not start the timer

‚Inactive after exceed volume‘. The sensitivity is valid for all cells that are on the foreground position or nearer.

• Object background: An object on the background position (Definition: The left, upper edge of the rectangle) triggers only an alarm if the number of activated cells is in the range of object minimum and object maximum (In the example between 2 and 8). The same range is valid for objects that are farther away. The value of the object maximum is limited to 255. For more informations see object foreground.

Important note: For all object positions betweeen fore- and background the sensor calculates automatically the intermediate values of maximum, minimum and sensitiv-ity.

• Objectstructure / Bounding / Auto reset: These parameters are independent of the perspective definition. The entry of the parameters are performed as described in object Mode and Area Mode.

6.5 Channel settings: Individual parameters can be set for each of the four camera channels. The menu is devided up in the sections ,Global Settings’, ,Picture memory size’ and the ,Area pa-rameters’, that is independent of the timezone:

6.5.1. Global Settings: Alterations in this menu have an effect on all time zones and on the subordinate areas of the channel.

• Channel active: Allows quick activation/deactivation of the channel, for example

when maintenance works in the viewing range of the camera are not supposed to trigger the sensor or to be detected as sabotage.

• Camera- / Alarmtext: The texts can be edited directly. The positioning and (de)-

activating of the textdisplay can only defined in ‘edit text insert’ (see page 14). • Relaytimer: Defines the time the relay is in energized state. The maximum time is

120 seconds = 2 minutes. The ‚Man.‘ setting means that only a manual reset at the channel input (contact closed, see pin assignment on page 7) resets the relay.

NOTE: - The selected time is equal to the auto reset time for the insert of the alarm text

and the LED display. - Triggering the relay is defined by the ‘Alarm relay‘ option of “Area parameters“.

• Retrigger Relay: If another alarm occurs during the time the relay is energized, the

time is automatically prolonged by the configured time. • Twilight contact: If activated, the sensor switches automatically between the day-

and night program. For more information see the Timezone definition on page 22. • Ext. contact normally open: An external alarm input is assigned to each channel.

Subordinate sensor areas can be linked to this input (see External contact on page 34). When this area parameter is activated, the sensor area only triggers if

a.) the external input has been closed (checkbox ‘Ext. contact NO’ is not active) b.) the external input is open (checkbox ‘Ext. contact NO’ is active).

• Show cells: Alterations in the camera picture are visible for each individual cell.

The option , Area display’ in menu ‘Area parameters II’ (see page 34) is inactive in this case.

6.5.2. Picture Memory Size: With the parameter “Deep” the measuring interval of the circular buffer is set in the range from 0,25 seconds (shortest time interval; only fast picture changes are de-tected) to 2 seconds (longest interval; fast and very slow changes are detected). This parameter has an effect on all 4 subordinate areas of the channel, but it can be de-fined for each timezone separately ( Day- and night-programs). Comment: The VMD-4 scans the entire video picture 8 times per second. Thus, very fast picture changes can be correctly detected. If the object moves very slowly and the measurement interval is fixed at a short time interval, the sensors may not always trigger correctly between two video pictures which are to be compared. The change in brightness as compared to the time interval is not large enough to ex-ceed the trigger sensitivity (see also “sense value”, page 27). The VMD-4 solves this problem by means of an internal circular buffer: The brightness values of a video scan are stored internally for a maximum of 2 sec. and subsequently overwritten with new values. Thus the VMD-4 is capable of compar-ing the brightness values of two video pictures that have been read e.g. in 2 sec. apart. Now, slow movements in the picture can be correctly detected.

6.5.3 Area parameters II: All parameters of each area can be edited independently from the other areas in this dialog box:

Mode (only red area): There are 3 kinds of operation modes:

• Area Mode: The Alarm analysis of the red area is based on the number of de-tected cells (checkbox Object-Mode deactive).

• Object Mode: The detected cells on the red area will be combined to one or more objects. (checkbox Object-Mode active).

• Object Mode with perspektive: Each object will be analysed concerning to size

and sensitivity according to the object position. Horizontal /Vertical: Defines whether the object size in the camera picture is chan-ging mostly by rows (horizontal) or by columns (vertical).

For more information about these operation modes see ‚Area parameters I‘ (page 26). • Show objects: All detected objects will be displayed.

Important: If this function is activated, the sensor will ignore all other display set-tings of the channel ( ‚Static Area display‘ , ‚Alarm Area display‘ and ‚Show cells‘).

Parameters

• Sensitivity: Sets the sensitivity for all marked cells of the sensor area. The higher the value set, the higher is the sensitivity of the cells. Important: If two or more areas with different sensitivities overlap the overlapped cells are defined by the most sensitive value.

• Number of detections: Changes of the sensor area that – according to the con-figured parameters – must cause an alarm has to be detected n times immediately following each other (n = parameter value) before the alarm becomes active. Thus, nonrecurring events such as light reflections can be excluded. Note:

If an object enters the alarm area an additional delay (approx. n x 1/8 sec-ond) occurs before the alarm is triggered.

• Reference area: If an area is defined as reference area, it is evaluated with prior-ity: In any case, the reference area is analyzed before the other area of the chan-nel. Where a reference area is defined to suppress influences that make an effect to the whole picture e.g. weather influence like clouds.

Timer settings

• Alarm reset: Timer is started when the sensor area initiates an alarm. After expiration the alarm of the sensor area is reset. This includes: The display of the area (if activated), the internal linking ( see “Area Matrix” on page 17) and the transmitting of the serial alarm strings (‘Alarm OFF strings’, see page 17) . IMPORTANT: The alarm relay will only be reseted after expiration of the

relay energizing time set under “Channel settings” respectively after a manual reset.

• Inactive after Alarm: Time period in which the sensor area is inactive after an

alarm has been triggered (no repeated triggering for the same condition). This time start after expiration of the alarm reset time of the sensor area.

NOTE: If the “Alarm Reset” or the “Inactive after alarm ” - timer of an area is ac-tive, this area cannot trigger a new alarm.

Exception: The value of “Inactive after alarm” is set to “0” (multiple triggers).

• Inactive after exceed volume: Time within the sensor area stays inactive after

exceeding the maximum permissible number of triggered cells (Min./Max.). Prevents repeated triggering after switching on room lights etc.

Contacts

• Switch Relay: The relay of the corresponding camera channel is energized for an alarm of the sensor area. Note: If the area is only to trigger a pre-alarm (see “Area matrix”), this function usually must be deactivated. The energizing time is identical for all sensor areas per channel and is defined in menu “Channel settings ” (see page 31).

• External contact: Each channel is equipped with an external input, which can be

taken into account for alarm processing. When the option is activated, the sensor area only triggers if the external input has been connected in the manner (normally open or normally closed) that has been defined as ‘External contact NO’ in menu “Channel settings ”. The external input allows several applications: Controlling the sensor area by an automatic timer, additional combination with an IR alarm, manual control (gate keeper) etc.

Display: Parameter to display the defined area on the channel output:

Note: These display settings will be ignored, if one of the other functions ‚Show cells‘ (see Parameters) and ‚Show objects‘ (see Mode) is activated. •.... Static Area display: all cells of the area are displayed always. • Alarm Area display: all cells of the area are only displayed in case of an alarm.

7.0 VMD-4 Setup-Configuration via PS/2 keyboard

General information: For the setup configuration a customary PS/2 keyboard is connected to the VMD-4. The keyboard can be plugged on while the sensor operates. The configuration of the setup parameters is limited to editing the text display, the clock setting, (de-)activating of the channels and the system parameters. The other parameter can only be changed under the PC setup program. The characters are input in alphameric notation: the character-keys a-z, A-Z and 0-9 are allowed. Furthermore the display of <, > , :, ., -, , , /, ; is valid. The notation of arrows is possible according to the following definition: ´ [ ` = ←← ; ´ ] ` = →→ ; ´ ( ` = ↑↑ ; ´ ) ` = ↓↓ ; ´ { ` = vv ; ´ } ` = ww ; Call setup: By pressing the F1-key you can call up the setup menu and a password inquiry ap-pears: The password can be a maximum of 6 characters and is case-sensitive! If the password is less than 6 characters long the last positions have to be filled with blank characters. Example: „norma“ (factory setting) has to be entired as: `n`-`o`-`r`-`m`-`a`-` `. ATTENTION: - The password of the keyboard setup and of the setup via RS232 (see

page 13) are the same! An alteration of the password via keyboard should be considered by the next connect to the pc setup program!

- If the password has been lost please contact your dealer ! After entering the right password the main menu is displayed and the following func-tions are possible: - Edit Text Display (camera- and alarm texts, date/ time) - (De-)activating channels - System parameters (RS232 interface, password). You can call up the respective submenu with the keys 1...3. With the key ESC you leave the main menu: The sensor is performing an internal reset and will be initialized with the new parameters. In the submenus all parameters will be changed directly with the character and nu-meric keys or by usingthe arrow keys éê . By pressing the arrow keys èç you can skip between the edit field of the parameter. With the entry of ESC you leave each submenu.
