Consumption and production systemshave gone global.

Global production and consumption systemsfail to achieve fair distribution of resources.

Global production and consumption systems are not mindful of planetary limits.
“... there is a direct link between the financial crisis and the ecological crisis. To the extent that ecological limits restrict the growth rates of earnings,
stock prices will fall.”Carsten Henningsen, co-founder of the global sustainability fund Portfolio 21.

Civil society is part of the triangle of change
GovernmentBusiness
Civil Society
“Participation of all actors in society is needed to achieve sustainable consumption and production . None of these actors can change unsustainable patterns alone, but together they can form a so-called triange of change. Actors are ready to change their behaviour if they know that others are doing their bit.“
UK Sustainable Consumption Roundtable, 2006

The challenge of Sustainable Consumption & Production
Focus on food&drink, mobility and housing:
Together these impact areas account for approximately 70-80% of environmental impacts arising from all products over their life cycles.
Impact categories thereby range from global warming, acidification, photochemical ozone formation to eutrophication.*

Addressing policy implementation gap & need for policy innovation
• Policy and practical implementation of the SCP agenda has been slow.
• Monitoring of implementation needs to be strengthened.
• New generation policy instruments beyond informative instruments are needed to address consumer behavior change.
• International (e.g. within Marrakech Process more active engagement in NGO Platform);
• Regional (e.g. within SCP Action Plan indicating at the need for innovative policy instruments to address consumer behavior change, monitoring implementation)
• National (e.g. within National Action Plan development)
• City (e.g. encouragement of GPP)
• Community (e.g. eco-teams)
• Individual/Citizen (e.g. awareness-raising on eco-labels)
Civil society response at various levels:
Burcu Tunçer CSO Platform on SCP Project - framework, objectives & milestones www.scp-network.net
Enhancing dissemination of sustainable technologies
How can CSOs facilitate the uptake of sustainable technologies in the e.g. housing sector?
Strategy 3: Collaboration /negotiation
• Media/member/contact promotion of positive (and negative?) cases of ST
• Adding to indepenent info. measures, distribution and feedback – increasing understanding of ST
Strategy 2 Awareness raising & campaigning
• Offering services to ST stakeholders – evaluation, consultation, research etc
• Programmes promoting ST and behavioural change in implementation e.g. demonstrations
Strategy 1 Research &Dissemination
• Joining stakeholder tasks/ dialogue on technology implementation, standards
• Studying responses to technologies – social and technical performance
• Collating contacts views and actions

e.g. WWF-Uniross partnership: Campaign on environmental benefits
of re-chargeable batteries, and recycling batteries, Uniros fund
several WWF initiatives especially those focused on SCP.
