The Times of Bill cunninghamd: Mark bozek | 2018 | usa | 74 min | pG

Get to know iconic street photographer and fashion historian Bill Cunningham in this moving new portrait, including his four decades at The New York Times. Told in Cunningham’s own words from a recently unearthed 1994 interview, the doc chronicles the artist’s fascinating life’s story, including moonlighting as a milliner in France during the Korean War, his unique relationship with First Lady Jackie Kennedy, and his democratic view of fashion and society. Narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker, The Times of Bill Cunningham boasts an incredible archive of photographs chosen from over 3 million previously unreleased images.

The Booksellersd: d.W. young | 2019 | usa | 99 min

Bibliophiles unite! Step inside the leather-and-musk-scented world of New York City’s rare book world, an eclectic crew of wheelers and dealers dedicated to preserving history one musty tome at a time. Behold books bound in human flesh, accounts of polar expeditions containing tufts of real mammoth fur, manuscripts scribed by Borges, and other literary curiosities. But these stranger-than-fiction relics are more than just novel—they are links to our shared past. Executive produced by Parker Posey, The Booksellers celebrates the value of books as tangible objects at a time when chain stores and e-readers threaten their very existence.

Opens Friday, MarCH 13

afterward d: Ofra bloch | usa | 2018 | 95 min

Join Israeli-born psychoanalyst Ofra Bloch, the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, on her journey to reconcile competing traumatic histories in Germany, Israel and Palestine. With an empathetic ear, Bloch turns to subjects who, like her, have defined themselves through long-held narratives of hatred and division: Germans living in the shadow of Nazi crimes and Palestinians resisting the occupation of their lands. As moving stories from both sides are laid bare, the lines that divide begin to fall apart. Spurred by a rising wave in anti-Semitism and fascism around the world, Bloch’s nuanced film makes the case that the way forward lies in confronting a past that continues to wound in the present.

Opens Friday, MarCH 27

This is not a Movied: yung Chang | 2019 | Canada, Germany | 106 min | pG

Investigating “the truth” has never been an easy task. Yet veteran British foreign correspondent Robert Fisk has spent the better part of his career doing just that, from his legendary stint at The Times in the ‘80s to over 30 years with The Independent, where he continues to report on the Middle East. In this immersive tour de force from acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Yung Chan (Up the Yangtze), follow the uncompromising journalist as he fights to capture reality from the frontlines of Syria to Palestinian refugee camps and beyond. A testament to the power of journalism in the age of “fake news,” This is Not a Movie earns its place in Chang’s growing repertoire of incisive films that interrogate the most urgent themes of our time.

“Will be enjoyed by anyone who’s ever happily spent hours wandering through bookstores.” – Hollywood Reporter

“Relevant in these politically charged times.” – Hollywood Reporter

“A litmus test for the last quarter-century’s crisis of journalistic integrity.” – Cinema Scope

Overseas d: sung-a yoon | belgium, France | 2019 | 90 min

In one of the Philippines’s many government-accredited training centres, a group of women prepare to join the ranks of the 10 million Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) currently deployed abroad. They learn to serve at a table, care for infants, and brace themselves for the worst: homesickness, exhaustion, mistreatment and abuse. Quietly gripping and often startling, Overseas brings to light the question of modern servitude in our globalized world, while emphasizing these women’s personal stories, determination, sisterhood and the strategies they find to face the unknown.
