Opening Assignment

• Finish these sentences… 1. The three states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) depend on _________________.

• 2. To change states of matter (to go from a solid to a liquid, or a liquid to a solid, all you have to do is_____________

• Indicate if the sentence is T or F. If F, change the underline word so it is true.

• 3. When a gas turns to a liquid, its called evaporation. • 4. The freezing point is the temperature that a liquid turns

to a gas.

STATES OF MATTERSTATES OF MATTER

• What are the states of matter?

• Three common state of Matter on Earth

• 1. Solid• 2. Liquid• 3. Gas• 4. Plasma

STATES OF MATTERSTATES OF MATTER

What’s different between the three different states of matter?

particle arrangementenergy of particlesdistance between

particlesDoes it have a definite or

indefinite Shape?Does it have a definite or

indefinite volume?

Kinetic Theory of Matter

Matter is made up of particles which are in continual random motion.

Page 7: Opening Assignment Finish these sentences… 1. The three states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) depend on _________________. 2. To change states of matter.

STATES OF MATTERSOLIDS

•Particles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position.

•Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume.

•Low energy!

Heat

STATES OF MATTERLIQUID

Particles of liquids are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another.

Liquids have an indefinite shape and a definite volume.

More energy than solids but less energy than gasses!

Heat

STATES OF MATTERGAS

Particles of gases are very far apart and move freely.

Gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

High energy!

Heat

But what happens if you raise the temperature to super-high levels…

between 1000°C and 1,000,000,000°C ?

(1832 °F and 180,000,000,032°F

Will everything just be a gas?

STATES OF MATTERPLASMA

A plasma is an ionized gas.

A plasma is a very good conductor of electricity and is affected by magnetic fields.

Plasmas, like gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

• Plasma is the most common state of matter in the universe

STATES OF MATTER

SOLID LIQUID GAS PLASMA

Tightly packed, in a regular pattern

Vibrate, but do not move from place

to place

Close together with no regular arrangement.Vibrate, move

about, and slide past each other

Well separated with no regular arrangement.

Vibrate and move freely at high

speeds

Has no definite volume or shape and is composed

of electrical charged particles

Neon lights

• Man-made plasmas like neon and fluorescent lights.

• Inside the long tube is a gas. Electricity flows through the tube when the light is turned on.

• The electricity acts as an energy source and charges up the gas. This charging and exciting of the atoms creates glowing plasma inside the bulb.

• The electricity helps to strip the gas molecules of their electrons.

Some other places where plasmas are found…

1. Flames
