History 24 - 1911The return to frugality
As the citizenry and those who govern it had for quite sometime

To him has been ascribed the construction of the very first barge that sailed on Naviglio Grande, after it was made navigable in 1272.The barge carried on her maiden cruise six hens, 2 oxen, 120 pounds of sand, three barrels of beer, 2 barrels of oil, 3 draught mules, Abbiategrasso’s Burgomaster, his wife and their thirteen children (one of which later was the first to try and swim the full length of the canal, but died in the attempt due to, as it seems, a

Saint Brancazio from CuassoHerdsman and Saint ca 812-841
A persona of humble origins, he was raised to sanctity when, after he noticed a slip in the ground and a principle of landslide, he ran to the
village of Cuasso al Monte (in the proximities of Varese) suggestingits immediate evacuation. Upon returning to save his small herd entrusted to him, he met his demise under the gigantic landfall, but not before rescuing the animals. The fall brought to light a vein of red porphyry, used for paving and in the construction of buildings. Several faith-healings happened after the invocation of Brancazio’s name and, reckoned as miraculous by the Church’s authorities, led to his beatification and, in 897, to Sainthood by act of Pope Theodore II
whom, a few days after that, passed away himself.

Erminetta da VimodroneChief Laundress at the court of Ferdinand Karl
Anton von Osterreich-Este 1767-1839
In 1805 she supervised the washing and folding of the whole of the Archduke’s wardrobe whom, as he was about to leave Milan for the impending approach of Napoleonic forces, intended to take away, besides the silverware, also
the curtains, bedclothes, coverlets, and the tongs of the large fireplace of Palazzo Reale where he dwelt. Erminetta,
acting secretely overnight, succeeded in substituting the Archduke’s
loot with rags and old tarpaulins. Ferdinand, thus befooled, never recovered from this experience until his death one year
later.
Beno de’ NeopterigiiFishmonger at the Dockyard 1617-1702
The only facts known about him are that he worked on the high-seas fishing fleet in the Tyrrhenian and that he later moved to Milan where he started an activity as a fishmonger until his late years. It seems that rumours about Beno’s habit of hitting with his products people he disagreed with
are baseless.
