AU T OALMANAC
DRAWING BOARD2015 Kia Sorento: The company is relaunching its seven-passenger family sport ute for 2015. Overall length is in-creasing by 3.7 inches, while the distance between the frontand rear wheels is up three inches. The Sorento’s interior isalso being updated, however the base four-cylinder andavailable V6 engines will likely carry over.
AUTO TRIVIA• In 1946, General Motors engineer Earle MacPherson inventeda combination shock absorber and front-suspension strut that’snamed after him.
• Actor Don Johnson of Miami Vice TVfame and Matthew Broderick, star ofthe movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,were shown piloting classic Ferraris. However both cars were actually repli-cas made up to look just like the originals.
WHO AM I?To guess his secret identity, read the following clues!1) By the age of 12, he was selling photos of local stock-carracers.2) By 14, he was writing a column for the weekly tabloid TheNational Auto Racing News.3) Although he attempted to race cars, he spent most of hislife reporting on them, the drivers and the races.4) From 1961-’84, he was “the voice” of motorsports on ABCTV.5) He died in 2012 at age of 91 and is remembered for hislove of racing.
STILL STUMPED?
His name is ChrisEconomaki, and he hadreported auto-racingnews for more than 60years.
WHAT’S UP, AUTO DOC?A friend of the Auto Doc’s asked if the V8 engine was on itsway out. Well, if V8 engines ran on no fuel and created noemissions, they (and V10 and V12 engines, for that matter)would be favorites for everyone. But as automakers look at
meeting ever-increasing Corporate Av-erage Fuel Economy (CAFE) regula-tions, the biggest users of fuel and thebiggest polluters are not necessarilytargeted for obsolescence, but simplyfall by the wayside. In fact, the AutoDoc is seeing signs that even six-cylin-der engines are not making the cut, re-placed by four-cylinder engines and
even three-cylinder engines. Cutting back on pistons seemsto be dovetailing with increasing use of electric power, whichclearly shows the desire to move away from fossil fuels alto-gether. If the next car you buy isn’t a hybrid or a full-on elec-tric, the car after that most likely will be, and the V8 — andpossibly the V6 — will likely be a fond memory.
