OPC/UA ADI Vision

Just as field device standards have driven the widespread adoption of intelligent field devices in the process industries, this specification will promote the use of high level analyzers in manufacturing processes.

Provide a model for implementing a software interface that exposes the capabilities of process and laboratory analyzers in a standard discoverable way

Provides guaranteed access to the raw data not just the derived values

Uses the widely accepted, platform-neutral OPC/UA specification.

Technology DemonstrationACHEMA Fair, Germany – Spring, 2009

The true power of OPC/UA ADI was first demonstrated

A simulated ABB FTIR spectrometer was connected over OPC/UA ADI to an OSI-PI historian

The FTIR simulator was build on a OPC/UA ADI server and OSI-PI used a standard OPC/UA client to browse the server and discover the available data

ADI Analyzer Model ADI provides an extensible data model

Represents a generic analyzer as a measuring device with n channels

Models the slots for sample accessories and the actual installed accessories

The model is flexible enough to represent analyzer systems made up of many discrete analyzers

ADI Defines 2 Server ProfilesAnalyzers are represented by UA servers

Level 1 – Is a self testable profile

Provides access to ADI commands and data

Provides basic configurability through upload of a configuration structure

Level 2

Provides access to all the configuration parameters as individual read/write variables

Verifiable by comparing to all the settings possible in the analyzer native software

ADI Analyzers State Machine

ADI provides an analyzer state machine for use with all analyzer types

The state machine utilizes OPC/UA built in command and status communication capabilities

All required analyzer and application specific functions can be implemented in defined sub-states

ADI defines ISA88 type analyzer channel states and operating sub-states including sub-states for Sample Acquisition, Reference Acquisition, and Cleaning

OPC/UA ADI BenefitsADI inherits all the benefits of OPC/UA, plus…

Data Integration simplified through ADI analyzer software model with definition of common parameters names

Complex data communication enabled through definition of array data types including the metadata for spectra, particle size distributions… and images commonly utilized by analyzers – data no longer needs to be transferred as a file

Integration of analyzer sampling simplified with definition of a generic analyzer channel state model

Data analysis efficiencies through definition of sample and acquisition timestamps and batch context data as an integrated part of result data

OPC/UA ADI BenefitsADI inherits all the benefits of OPC/UA, plus…

Analyzer installation and commissioning time reduced through browsing and command capability of a simple generic OPC/UA ADI client

Improved integration support with elimination of point to point solutions and OPC/UA ADI certification testing

Flexible architecture supporting analyzers, servers, historians, and multivariate modeling software

More affordable to implement analyzers as a key input to PAT/QbD initiatives
