In the case of most hybrid vehicle designs, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) are used because of their high efficiency and high power density. The PMSM specifications presented Ford with important simulation challenges requiring development of an effective control strategy. OPAL-RT supplied Ford Motor Company with an eDRIVEsim Real-Time HIL Simulator. The production controller was attached to the real-time simulator and tested accordingly, as if it were attached to the real driveline. The use of HIL simulation to simulate test conditions and vehicle behavior, and hybrid vehicle components such as motor drive and driveline, has resulted in reduced development time and cost, and higher quality products.

Diesel engine sensors are different from standard fuel engine and adaptation in the HIL solution is then required. The challenge to find an HIL solution representing non-typical sensors at a decent price could be challenging. Using the flexibility of the FPGA to adapt sensor configuration as well as being compatible with 3rd party I/Os, allows OPAL-RT to provide a complete solution at a competitive price. Also being able to support Application Programming Interface allows OPAL-RT’s simulators to connect with other software suites, reducing training and changing costs.
