Once again, we were packed in Hee Hing Restaurant for our annual banquet last month. Our emcee of the evening was Board of Director, Edmund Chang. We were also fortunate to have comedian Frank Delima entertain us during dinner.

Our annual banquet is a time where we can get most of our members together with the local Chinese community, family, and friends. It is always nice to see everyone for a delicious and quite filling 7-course Chinese dinner.

If you missed it this year, there’s always next year. If you live on the mainland, you should make a vacation back to Hawaii so you can join us at this banquet! You will see some old and new faces!

classes in the simulated classrooms that provide live situations and experiences of air traffic control.

This past semester, Daeton had the opportunity to actually learn how to fly an airplane in one of his classes called Survey of Flight. He goes through a checklist to ensure that the plane is safe to fly, and checks the switches and buttons are in the correct settings. He communicates with tower control to request a takeoff, and feels that the intense rush of pulling the plane into the air above 3,000 feet is remarkably amazing! While in the air, he feels free of all responsibilities, and focused on the endless amounts of open sky that await him.

Daeton received OSGL scholarships in 2005 and 2006.

Teralyn continues to pursue a career in pharmacy. At Idaho State University, she learns how things can affect the human body in her science classes. She will also minor in business soshe can have a better understanding of management with hopes to gain a higher position as a pharmacist.

Teralyn is also interested in learning herbal medicines compared to Western medications. If she were to return to our ancestral hometown village of Oo Syak, she would share her knowledge of health care to treat their ailments.

Teralyn is active in OSGL while in Hawaii and has participated in our numerous parades and helped out at many functions and banquets. She is a recipient of the Oo Syak Gee Lu Scholarship for the past two years. This is her third consecutive year receiving our Society’s scholarship.

Nick’s first year away from home, was not all fun and games. As he learned to gain his independence, he learned responsibility for his school work, house chores, and overall, good judgment. He learned quickly how to manage his classes, study, and socialize.

Nick got intrigued by his business Accounting classes where he learned the processes of how various businesses work, operate and compete with each other. His computer science classes peaked his interest to write programs in Java Script and ADA, and write codes for multi-page websites. Therefore, Nick decided on a double major in Accounting and Computer Science.

Nicholas was vacationing in Hawaii just before the Scholarship Dinner. His father Bradford attended the dinner to receive his award on Nick’s behalf.

Nicholas completed his first year in college at Western Washington University, located in Bellingham, 90 miles north of Seattle. He lived in the dormitory and made friends with people of diverse backgrounds. He explored different places around campus and Bellingham, and took interest in their beaches, mountain ranges and forests. Nick also took a skiing class that exposed him to the wintry Northwest snow country at Mount Bachelor.

Growing up in the Northwest, with family in Hawaii, Nicholas made friends with members of the Hawaii Club, Hui O’ Hawaii. He participated in planning the school luau, and was glad he was able to share his spirit of Aloha with food, song, and dance.

Introducing the New Director General

New Director General

Paul Wen-liang Chang

Director General Paul Chang (center) accepting

his role during his welcome reception at the

United Chinese Society Hall on King Street.

In July, the United Chinese Society hosted welcome reception to introduce the new Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO). Paul Wen Liang Chang moved here from Taiwan. He recently left his post as Director-General in the Department of International Organizations, a Ministry

of Foreign Affairs, and concurrently Senior Official of Chinese Taipei in APEC.

The purpose of TECO is to promote exchanges and cooperation in trade and investment, science and technology, culture, education, and tourism between Taiwan, Hawaii, and American Samoa. The office provides consular service and serves the interests of overseas compatriots living in and visiting Hawaii.

We welcome Paul Chang to Hawaii and wish him a successful tenure as our new Director General.

Double Ten Parade

The Double Ten is a national holiday for the People’s Republic of China (present day Taiwan). Each year a parade is held to commemorate Taiwan’s nationalism and freedom from communist China.

OSGL members participate each year in the parade, which is generally a short walk around Chinese Cultural Plaza. During the parade, we’ll sport our “flashy” red OSGL hats and OSGL t-shirts. At the end of the parade march, a lei is presented to the statue of Dr. Sun Yet Sen in the plaza mall.

We encourage everyone to participate in this cultural event. OSGL treats participating members to a luncheon after the parade. To participate in the Double Ten Parade, please call Ellen Chang at 623-5910 by Sept 30th.

Moon Festival 中秋節中秋節中秋節中秋節Moon Festival, also known as

Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhong Qiu

Jie), falls on the 15th moon day of the 8th Chinese lunar month. This year, it falls on September 22nd.

During Moon Festival, it is a tradition that we eat delicious round dessert cakes called “moon cakes”. Legend says leaders preceding the Sung Dynasty (960-1280 A.D.) were unhappy with foreign rule of the Mongols. They conspired to send secret messages of a plan of attack in special round cakes on the 15th

moon day. Through these messages, they were successful in overthrowing the Mongolian government.

Today, people eat symbolically round moon cakes as a commemoration of this legend. They send moon cakes to their relatives as gifts in expression of their best wishes of family reunion.

Revisit to China RootsThree years ago, in spring

2007, 11 people (members, families, and friends) participated in our ancestral roots tour in China. It was an

18-day tour, and we visited many places such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Suzhou, Hong Kong, and Oo Syak village in Sam HeongProvince (Guangzhou, aka Canton). We had a warm welcome in Oo Syak from the dignitaries and government officials. They were singing praises of our homecoming to our ancestors. We also got the chance to go shopping and see the famous sights of our Motherland country.

There have been a few inquiries since we returned from our trip if we will make a second trip back. This is a great chance to revisit your ancestral roots or see how much the village has changed over the years of modernization. If you have some interest in going to China and visiting Oo Syak village, please call Jamie Chang at 373-1714 or email [email protected]. If there is enough interest from our members, we will be glad to plan another trip in the near future.
