CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

EVIDENCE-INFORMED PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Research Schools aim to lead the way in the use of

evidence-based practice and bring research closer

to schools. Through our network, we share what we

know about putting research into practice, and

support schools to make better use of evidence to

inform their teaching and learning so that they really

make a difference in the classroom, especially for

those pupils who experience disadvantage. Evidence

supplements expertise (not supplants it), provides

best bets (not silver bullets) and should always be

viewed within the context it was derived. Our range

of Research School Network training programmes

outlined here provide high quality, cost-effective and

evidence-informed opportunities for learning new

knowledge, refining approaches and improving

practice.

Unity Research School is based

across the East of England. We

offer a comprehensive

programme of continuing

professional development to

help bridge the gap between

research and classroom

practice, through our team of

evidence leads and advisers. BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN RESEARCH

The library of EEF Guidance Reports is a great place to access clear, actionable

guidance on classroom practice and leadership. These twilights will focus on one of

the growing library of reports and provide practical next steps for participants to

implement in the context of your school.

An Introduction to Disciplined Inquiry RS2

Evidence-informed reflective framework for teachers,

TAs and school leaders Afternoon: 14:00-16:30

Disciplined inquiry is a process which encourages teachers to think

deeply about how they are going to improve their teaching using evidence-

informed approaches. Teachers identify a pertinent inquiry question within

their teaching and utilise a simple, structured process to reflect on and draw

conclusions from their intentional development of classroom practice. Two

half day, face-to-face sessions are used to introduce the process and

support teachers, signposting to evidence within their in-school inquiry

project.

‘Vision without implementation is hallucination’

Thomas Edison

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how great an educational idea or

intervention is in principle; what really matters is how it

manifests itself in the day-to-day work of people in schools.

This programme of two half-day face-to-face sessions, led by

Andy Samways, will enable leaders of all levels to understand

how to utilise the guidance report and its recommendations

within the context of school improvement.

Suitable for: school leaders, aspirant leaders, governors

The evidence-informed cycle for effective school improvement at the heart of the EEF’s guidance

report ‘Putting Evidence to Work’.

Research School Evidence-Informed

Three day programmes RS4

Evidence-informed themes: see opposite.

Our Research School Network three day training programmes have been

developed in collaboration with the EEF. They take key aspects of school

improvement and set out to deepen understanding of evidence-informed

recommendations for impact on teaching and learning. These programmes (run

over two terms) provide participants time to consider how recommendations and

best evidence can be translated into classroom practice. Practical strategies are

explored and improvement activities designed between face-to-face days in order

to embed this valuable professional development within the context of the

participants' schools.

Metacognition & self-regulated learning (RS4a)

Practical evidence-informed strategies will guide you through helping

pupils improve their learning by teaching them how to plan, monitor

and evaluate their own academic progress so they become better at

learning and studying.

Improving KS2/3 Maths (RS4b)

We will explore how KS2 and KS3 maths teachers can mobilise the eight

recommendations of the EEF's guidance report, including the evidence-

informed practical ‘dos and don’ts’ of great maths teaching.

Sudbury 18/11/2019 16/01/2020 04/03/2020

Preparing for Literacy (RS4c)

We examine a range of research and resources that demonstrate how

progress in language, communication and literacy can be accelerated in

the early years; addressing the attainment gap pre-KS1.

Haverhill 02/12/2019 03/02/2020 TBC

Improving Literacy at KS2/3 (RS4d)

We will explore evidence-based approaches to reading, writing and

vocabulary development to ensure challenge at KS2 and KS3 as well as

progression across the primary-secondary transition. Jam-packed with

practical, take-away ideas to ‘close the word gap’.

Sudbury 08/11/2019 22/01/2020 10/03/2020

Making the best use of Teaching Assistants (RS4e)

This programme explores the evidence associated with strategic

deployment of TAs in schools. Targeted at school leaders, including

SENDCOs, the focus includes deployment in classrooms, intervention

delivery and effective implementation of your strategy.

Newmarket 08/10/2019 26/11/2019 31/03/2020

Leading Professional Learning (RS4f)

Designed to support the evermore strategic planning of CPD, this

programme enables participants to maximise the long and short term

impact of training on pupil outcomes. Explore the evidence and generate

your own CPD implementation plan for use in your school.

Evidence-lead Programme RS5

Supplementing expertise with evidence

Two half days: 14:00-16:30

Teachers and schools are being encouraged to become more evidence-

based or evidence-informed. Using evidence to improve teaching practice

and acting on the best bets will increase the likelihood that better

decisions will be made. Evidence leads can therefore play influential roles

in school improvement and provide a valuable professional development

experience for teachers. Two half day sessions, led by Andy Samways,

will support an application to the Research School for recognition of this

role and establish practices to support effective deployments in schools.

This recognition complements SLE status.

Maximising the Impact of Pupil Premium RS6

Supplementing expertise with evidence

Two days: 9:30-15:30

Marc Rowland is recognised for his expertise in this

aspect of school improvement. Join him on this two-day

programme to deepen your understanding of the

evidence behind effective approaches to maximising

Pupil Premium and closing the attainment gap for

disadvantaged pupils. As well as a wealth of strategies

shared from his national and international work in this

area, the face-to-face days will be complemented by

inter-session activities within your school to help you

contextualise this professional learning over the course

of a term.

High Impact Digital Technology: RS7

Feedback, retrieval practice & modelling in the primary

classroom

One day: 9:30-16:00

Alex Bedford leads this inspiring one full day face-to-face

training session which utilises the recent EEF guidance

report 'Using digital technology to improve learning'. Sir

Kevan Collins introduces the guidance report with

'Technology has transformed how we do things, from

communication with friends and family to learning about the

world around us. The pupils we teach do not know a life

without it. The opportunities it offers us to improve education

are truly exciting. The question is no longer whether

technology should have a place in the classroom, but how

technology can most effectively be integrated in ways which

achieve improved outcomes for young people'. Alex

combines research and his experience as an educational

professional to bring you practical strategies for the

classroom.

KS2/3 Maths Twilight Series RS8

Pedagogy, subject knowledge and evidence-informed

practice for teachers 16:15-17:45

Following on from the extensive training associated with our KS2

Maths SSIF programme, Maths Evidence Lead, Anna Tapper,

leads this series of twilight sessions in 2019/20. These

sessions are carefully designed to supplement previous

professional development as well as introduce new learning for

those not previously involved. Utilising evidence from the

guidance report and maths mastery approaches, as well as

experience from the classrooms of the extended project,

teachers will be supported in developing strategies for effective

teaching, particularly for those pupils struggling in Mathematics.

Share practice, refresh strategies and collaborate.

16:15-17:45

Termly twilights supplement additional open-school events within the SfA

flagship schools of the Trust that are currently implementing Success for

All to great effect. Teachers, teaching assistants and leaders will be

provided valuable opportunities to share practice and develop their peer
