(Galatians 5:1) In the summer of 1776, conflict between the colonies and England was already a year old when the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia. In a June 7th session in the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall), Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presented a resolution with the famous words: "Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” On July 1, 1776, the Continental Congress reconvened, and on the following day, the Lee Resolution for independence was adopted by 12 of the 13 colonies, New York not voting. Mr. Lee's words were the springboard for the drafting of a formal Declaration of Independence. The process of revision continued through all of July 3 and into the late afternoon of July 4, when the Declaration was officially adopted. Since 1776, many Americans laid down their very lives in defense and preservation of freedom. There is a notable exhibition in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History entitled “The Price of Freedom.” The exhibition examines how the price paid for freedom has shaped the nation’s history and transformed American society. One interesting aspect of the “Price of Freedom” display is that it highlights the service and sacrifice of generations of American men and women many of which fought to preserve our religious freedom and personal liberty. Contained in this display is information about Sergeant Stubby. Sergeant Stubby served for 18 months during WWI with the 102nd Infantry Regiment. Sergeant Stubby participated in seventeen battles on the Western Front. Proclaimed by history as a true war hero, he saved his regiment from repeated surprise mustard gas attacks and found and comforted a multitude of wounded! Sergeant Stubby even once caught a German soldier by the seat of his pants, yes by the seat of his pants, then he held him until American soldiers found him and the German soldier. Sergeant Stubby, as he is known, has been called the most decorated war dog of World War I, and the only dog to be nominated for rank and then promoted to sergeant through combat. Sergeant Stubby, a brindle bull terrier, served his country and fellow soldiers with honors, but Stubby lacked an actual understanding of the value of true freedom!!! Sergeant Stubby served his master and never really grasped the real price of freedom. Unlike Stubby, New Testament christians must have a grasp and understanding of what it means to possess true freedom in Christ. The New American Standard Version translates Galatians 5:1 this way, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” The Apostle Paul exhorts christians to never consider returning to slavery of the law and sin. And then he motivates us by declaring the reason Christ gave himself on the cross for us. “It was for freedom.” Sadly, many who will celebrate a nation’s freedom July 4th will not grasp nor understand the true freedom and liberty that is in Christ. They will continue to live in slavery to sin, with little to no regard for the great sacrifice of Jesus that provided liberty, not just for a nation, but for the whole world. Hear the trumpeting sound of the true freedom in these words: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). In Christ there is true liberty!! Christ paid the real price of freedom!! Do you know this real freedom?? Have you obeyed the truth? Are you resolved to be free?? IT WAS FOR FREEDOM

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Nolan Brown, Ruth McMasters’ premature great nephew, is in Barnes with several problems.

Joe Burney. Randy Hyder’s uncle, takes chemotherapy when his blood counts permit.

*Vickie Cantrell was in the hospital, but is better. Ken Cooksey has stage 4 renal failure and other

health issues. Belinda Crews, sister-in-law of Wanda Crews, has

cancer that has returned. *Donna Demshar has scheduled her knee surgery

for July 18. Tom Fare is in the hospital with pneumonia. *Janet Fisher will have a biopsy on July 10 and

hopes to have results by the 12th. *Nicole Hampton will have a gall bladder test on

July 23. Karen Ramsey Helms, friend of Lorrie Chafin, has

cancer and is starting chemo and radiation. Dean Horning is doing well after surgery. Cecil Jones, brother-in-law of the Cruises, will start

chemo. Marsha Kammerer has begun her cancer treatment. Kevin Keeler is not doing well at all. Tim Lambert has been waiting a couple of years for a

kidney transplant. *Bobby Lewis continues to struggle with seizures

and other health problems. Mike Lillard, friend of Lorrie Chafin, has heart

issues. Julie Matney has upcoming brain surgery. Keith McHenry continues to have a multitude of

health problems while waiting for a kidney donor. Tye McMasters is doing better and is able to walk

short distances with a walker. Ronnie Oliver, Norma Nash’s son, has an

appointment for surgery July 24.

*Judy Phillips will have knee surgery August 19. Donna Plummer, Marcie Marchand’s mother, has

leukemia and spots on her lungs. Kay Plunkett broke her leg. Gordon Polston, Marla Graves’s uncle, has stage 4

cancer. Derick Reading, Dale Graves’s nephew, is doing

better and has gone home, but still has a long road ahead of him.

Dean Schoonover, Debra Chafin’s brother, has recurring cancer symptoms.

Micaiah Sedlacek, JoAnne’s nephew, needs both hips replaced, but there is a problem scheduling because of kidney failure.

Issie Tabor (13), has reoccurring cancer and it is now growing again.

James Taylor, a friend of the Hyders, is battling cancer.

Liz Barrows Taylor, friend of Leon Moon and daughter Patty, is confined to a walker with rheumatoid arthritis in her knees.

Morelia Ortiz Vallejos in Colombia had malignant tonsils removed with further treatment to come.

Condolences are also offered to Brenda and Jim Cruise and family at the passing of Brenda’s father, Ronnie Cantrell, last Monday. Colombia Trip: Please pray for Nacho and those working with him in Columbia, Richard Fredenall of Jefferson City and Johnny Hinton of Tulsa, OK. Please pray that their work is successful. They are doing preacher training and evangelism. Nacho will be returning late July 15th.

5th Sunday Singing Night: Please plan to participate and enjoy worship in song this evening with the men taking turns leading songs.

4th of July Parade and Booth: There will be a meeting after worship this evening to finalize plans for the parade. If you can help with the booth on the square there is a sign up sheet in the foyer.

Thank You: Appreciation goes out to all who are working diligently to prepare for a successful VBS. Thanks to the Ladies Bible class for putting the bags together for the parade and booth and preparing VBS invitations.

VBS Snacks: Please bring kid friendly finger foods for VBS and the open house. See Helen Buman if you have questions.

Fireworks: The Blazers’ yard will be open to anyone wanting to watch the July 4th fireworks. Bring lawn chairs or blankets.
