Burton Consulting Services 2013 50 HEALING THE GENERATIONS RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL 2002 CURRICULUM UPDATE ________________________________________________________________ SECTION 2: ONTARIO RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS (2002) HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, MATH MAIN IDEA In Canada there were roughly 100 residential schools operating at different times throughout the late 1800s up until the last residential school, Gordon School in Saskatchewan closed in 1996. In Ontario there were roughly 15 residential schools and 13 of those were attended by Nishnawbe Aski Nation children. The following lesson is a historical and geographical lesson mapping out those 13 schools in Ontario. Students will be able to locate the residential schools and the communities that they were located in along with their own community. LEARNING OJECTIVES: • Students will be introduced to the 13 residential schools in Ontario. • Students will be able to locate the 13 residential schools in Ontario and the community it was located in on a blank map of Ontario. • Students will also have an opportunity to see pictures of the schools. ACTIVITIES 1. Teacher will share the Main Idea (above) information with the students, which is the number of residential schools that were in Canada and Ontario. 2. Then show the map of Ontario (overhead) and explain it to the students. 3. Hand out the blank map to the students and read the instructions together as a class. 4.
