What is Onomatopoeia?
• Definition: a word that imitates the “Sound”.
• Sound words.
• Examples: Boo, Woof, Meow, Boom, Buzz
Media uses it....
• Old Batman & Robin shows.
Artists use it....
• Roy Lichtenstein is a famous Pop artist who often incorporated Sound words into his artwork!
Now HOW to create your own
ONOMATOPEIA ART.....
Step 1:
• Cut out various sizes of “text” from books and magazines.
• Make sure to leave out images and too many blank spaces.
Step 2:
• Glue pieces of “text” onto large white paper.
• Make sure to vary the direction, and ensure they overlap to cover the ENTIRE surface!
It should look like this…..
Step 3:
• Decide on a Sound / Onomatopoeia word.
• Center it and LIGHTLY trace it onto your sheet with pencil, then go over it with a black marker.
Step 4:
• Decide on a “Surround” shape. Examples could include:

• LIGHTLY trace around your word. You can have your word overlapping in some areas if you like.
• Outline in marker.
Step 5:
• Decide on 3 (no more than 4) colours. 1 for the words, 1 for outside edge, 1 shape and 1 for extra details (if you have any)
• Start painting.
Until it is all painted like this….
Step 6:
• Outline in marker and add a SHADOW EFFECT to the word.
Finished !
