Residential (Single Family Homes and Duplexes) - These permits allow residents and contractors to do minor electrical and plumbing remodel work, including upgrading the electrical service, adding or extending circuits and repiping a house. A residential field consultation permit allows residents to meet with an inspector on-site to ask technical questions about upcoming projects or receive advice about non-permitted construction.

Commercial (Apartment, Condominium or other Commercial Facility) - The following permits can be obtained by applicants with licensed contractors for minor electrical, plumbing and mechanical work at commercial properties. The contractor must verify in advance that the building’s electrical and plumbing systems can accommodate the change. Elevator contractors also can obtain permits to upgrade elevators, however, structural or electrical work associated with the upgrade requires a plan submittal and separate permit. Properties that participate in the Annual Facilities Program (AFP) should work with their assigned inspector or call 602-262-7501 to obtain permits.

The Planning & Development Department offers a number of online permits available at phoenix.gov/pdd/onlineservices. The permits will streamline city services, reduce counter wait times and facilitate private development. Included are permits for minor residential, commercial and fire prevention work that do not require plan review. Code compliance will be verified by a city inspector.
These permits can be easily obtained 24 hours a day, seven days a week without requiring a trip to City Hall. Customers can purchase the permit, do the work and schedule inspections. Some properties are restricted from this service, including properties in designated historic districts and those with unresolved cases of non-permitted construction.
