Introduction to the Lesson
What you will be doing in today’s lesson:• Learn what constitutes a Mimbre Bowl• Participate in this Art History lesson along with
the Aesthetics and Criticism discussion• Create your own Mimbre Bowl and participate in
critiques!• Fill out the Word Handout and take the final
Google Form Assessment.
Setting the Stage This is an image of a
Mimbre Bowl. What do you think the figure and the geometric patterns may symbolize? Why do you think there is a hole in this bowl?
*If you haven’t already posted your answer to these and the Aesthetics/Criticism questions on
the discussion board, do so now.
History• Lived primarily in New Mexico between 100-1150 AD• Many sites have been destroyed by looters• Share many cultural aspects with other Southwestern
groups, such as the rain god, Tlaloc.
Bowls
• Bowls were made using the coiling technique
• Most pottery was utilitarian• These bowls were used for
funeral ceremonies!• Symbols/Patterns represent
the deceased.• Black and white are the most
commonly used colors.• Kill-Hole was made to release
the soul of the deceased.
Studio StepsArt Supplies:• Old newspaper• Paper-mache glue (water and
flour)• Ruler• Balloon• Sandpaper• Gesso• Acrylic and/or Tempera Paints• Paintbrushes• Cleanup Materials (water,
paper-towls, etc.)
Studio StepsPaper-Mache• Tear newspaper into long
strips • Mix flour and water to
make the glue• Blow up your balloon• Dip newspaper strips into
glue and wrap around balloon.
• Let sit until completely dry.
Studio Steps
• When dry, pop the balloon!
• Sand down imperfections• Gesso layer (or several
layers)• Lightly sketch design• Paint using natural colors
