Online Learning Graduate Certificate in Safety Engineering CURRICULUM OVERVIEW AND PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS The Swanson School of Engineering’s Graduate Certificate Program in Safety Engineering has been developed to meet the growing need for engineers trained in the application and implementation of safety engineering concepts, principles and practices. The increasing footprint of the oil and gas industry, greater emphasis on meeting the demand for energy needs world-wide, growing evidence of safety-related concerns and injuries in the health care industry, and ever-increasing regulatory mandates in a variety of fields have culminated in the need for safety engineers. This unique program is targeted to engineers with new or additional safety responsibilities, or who are charged with managing large projects with incumbent safety responsibilities. The workforce demands for safety engineers is high and growing quickly. ONLINE LEARNING Students in distance-enabled programs are working professionals, and need flexibility in order to complete professional engineering graduate program requirements in a timely manner. Therefore, students in this program have three options. Students may attend classes on campus in the traditional way. Or, students have the option to “attend” class remotely in real time via the Internet, an option that still allows full classroom interaction. Finally, students may view lectures they missed in archived form. UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH | SWANSON SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING | INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

“ The safety engineer is a critical role that

requires an individual to understand,

characterize, quantify, and fix the complex

hazards of dynamic industrial processes.

In today’s complex working environments,

whether an assembly line, hospital or

nuclear plant, safety engineering maintains

worker health, ensures efficiency and

helps to reduce costs.”

the coast of Angola.
